EUROPE: THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF REFERENCE BEGINS IN PORTUGAL
More than ever, the CIK-FIA European Championships are emerging as the benchmark Competitions in International Karting. The regulatory and strategic choices of the CIK-FIA make
sense given the value of these uniquely competitive Races. The winners of this first event at
Portimao, Hanley in KF and Roosens in KF-Junior, found the ideal conditions to express their
talent and renew the excitement animating the International Competition.
The Kartdromo do Algarve venue hosted a CIK-FIA Competition for the first time in its history at the
opening of the Europeean KF and KF-Junior Championships. FPAK, the national sporting authority of
Portugal, and IAA Motor Clube de Portimao did their utmost to ensure the success of the Competition
with remarkably open minds. The 1531m long circuit offered a high class setting for this first meeting.
The absence of some drivers who had entered was regrettable. The explanations are many, but the date
coinciding with busy school periods and examinations and the distance from the centre of Europe have
been put forward to justify these shortcomings.
The great technical innovation in the Race conduct was of course the first use of the new front fairing
fasteners in competition with regulations put in place after extensive testing by the CIK-FIA. If there
is a sharp impact resulting from bad behaviour, the front fairing moves back visibly while continuing
to guarantee the same safety. Objectively, the efficiency, simplicity and accuracy of the system immediately convinced all participants and observers. No deliberately malicious frontal crash tarnished the
Competition, ensuring races of a high sporting standard. The stewards have worked to enforce the rules
by distributing a total of 20 penalties. This attitude has completely achieved it’s goal as no offense was
discovered in the Final in either category.
Ben Hanley returns to the main stage in KF
The experienced British driver Ben Hanley is part of a new team this year which uses the Croc Promotions chassis for the Mad Croc brand, for whom he races both in KF and KZ categories and he is currently
second in the provisional standings of 2015 European KZ Championship. Equipped with a TM Racing
engine and using Vega tyres, Hanley was almost invincible in KF in Portimao. He only conceded the fourth
fastest time in Qualifying Practice where the promising young Russian Alexander Vartanyan (Tony KartVortex-Vega) was poleman ahead of two of the main protagonists of the class, Tom Joyner (Zanardi-TM
Racing-Vega) and Felice Tiene (CRG-Parilla-Vega). The confrontation between different generations of
drivers also spiced up the Competition. Although Vartanyan was third behind Hanley and Tiene after the
Qualifying Heats, the young German Hannes Janker (CRG-Parilla-Vega) joined the leaders in the finals.
In both the Prefinal and Final, Hanley quickly escaped alone in the lead while the battle raged for the
podium positions. Janker finished second in the Prefinal ahead of the Dutchman Martijn Van Leeuwen

(CRG-TM Racing -Vega), but Joyner, the World Champion of 2013, returned to the second position in the
Final ahead of Tiene.
The top trio in the Final are also in the top three places of the provisional standings of the CIK-FIA European KF Championship with Hanley the leader with 35 points, Joyner second (27 points) and Tiene third
(25 points).
Kenny Roosens dominates in KF-Junior
For his third season in the youth category for 13 to 15-year-olds, the Belgian Kenny Roosens raised the
level of his ambitions. Racing with the team VDK Racing since last year, a simple but passionate family
structure, Kenny has matured. He was able to make the best use of his Kosmic chassis with Parilla engine
equipped with LeCont tyres, from the start to the finish of the Portuguese Competition. With the fastest
time of his group, but with 2nd place in Qualifying Practice, Kenny didn’t leave 1st place after that. The
leader of the Qualifying Heats thanks to his four straight wins, he also won the Prefinal before concluding
with another victory in the Final. The Pole-man Sami Worship (FA Kart-Vortex-LeCont) then struggled to
keep pace, probably because of his more recent debut in KF-Junior, leaving Christian Lundgaard (Tony
Kart-Vortex-LeCont) to take second position at the end of the heats. The Indonesian Perdana Putra
Minang (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) created a surprise by finishing second in the Prefinal ahead of Lundgaard. The Indian Kush Maini (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont) was battling for third position on the last lap of
the Final when he eliminated his rival Davide Vidales (Energy / TM) with a dangerous manoeuvre that
earned him an exclusion from the Competition. The young Brazilian Caio Collet (Kosmic-Vortex-LeCont)
recovered 2nd place on the podium thanks to his amazing qualities for a beginner in KF-Junior, while
Lundgaard took 3rd place in the Final and second in the provisional standings of the European Championship with 25 points, behind Roosens (35 points) and ahead of Collet (20 points).
The next competition of the CIK-FIA European KF and KF-Junior Championship will be held in England at
the PF International circuit on 18th to 21st June 2015.

Plus que jamais, les Championnats d’Europe de la CIK-FIA s’affirment comme les Compétitions de référence du Karting international. Les choix réglementaires et stratégiques de
la CIK-FIA prennent tout leur sens au vu de la valeur sportive inégalée de ses Courses. Les
vainqueurs de ce premier rendez-vous de Portimao, Hanley en KF et Roosens en KF-Junior ont
trouvé là les conditions idéales pour exprimer leur talent et renouveler la donne en donnant
un nouveau souffle à la Compétition internationale.
Le site du Kartdromo do Algarve accueillait pour la première fois de son histoire une Compétition de la
CIK-FIA à l’occasion de l’ouverture des Championnats d’Europe KF et KF-Junior. La FPAK, autorité sportive nationale du Portugal, et l’AIA Motor Clube de Portimao ont fait le maximum pour assurer la réussite
de la Compétition avec une ouverture d’esprit remarquable. Le circuit et ses 1531 m de longueur ont
offert un cadre de grande classe à ce premier meeting. L’absence de quelques Pilotes pourtant engagés de longue date était à regretter. Les explications sont multiples, mais la date coïncidant avec des
périodes scolaires chargées en examens ainsi que l’éloignement du centre de l’Europe ont souvent été
mis en avant pour justifier ces manquements.
La grande nouveauté technique concernant le déroulement des Courses a bien sûr été la première utilisation dans ce cadre des nouvelles fixations de carénage avant, une réglementation mise en place à l’issue
de nombreux tests par la CIK-FIA. En cas de choc marqué traduisant un mauvais comportement, le
carénage avant recule de manière visible tout en continuant à garantir la même sécurité. Objectivement,
l’efficacité, la simplicité et la justesse du système a tout de suite conquis l’ensemble des participants et
observateurs. Aucun choc frontal volontairement mal intentionné n’a terni la Compétition, assurant des
courses d’un haut niveau sportif. Les commissaires sportifs se sont attachés à faire respecter le règlement en distribuant au total une vingtaine de pénalités de 30’’. Cette attitude a parfaitement rempli son
rôle puisqu’aucune infraction n’a été relevée en Finale dans les deux catégories.
Ben Hanley revient sur le devant de la scène en KF
L’expérimenté Pilote britannique Ben Hanley fait partie cette année d’un tout nouveau team qui exploite
un châssis spécifique pour la marque Mad Croc sous l’appellation Croc Promotions, dans lequel il évolue
aussi bien en KF comme ici qu’en catégorie KZ où il occupe actuellement la seconde place au classement
provisoire du Championnat d’Europe 2015. Equipé d’une mécanique TM Racing et chaussé de pneus
Vega, Hanley s’est avéré quasiment invincible en KF à Portimao. C’est tout juste s’il a concédé le 4e
temps des Essais Qualificatifs dans lesquels s’est illustré le jeune Russe prometteur Alexander Vartanyan (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega), poleman devant deux des principaux protagonistes de la catégorie, Tom

Joyner (Zanardi-TM Racing-Vega) et Felice Tiene (CRG-Parilla-Vega). L’affrontement entre différentes
générations de Pilotes a d’ailleurs pimenté la Compétition. Si Vartanyan revenait 3e derrière Hanley et
Tiene à l’issue des Manches Qualificatives, c’est un jeune Allemand, Hannes Janker (CRG-Parilla-Vega)
qui a rejoint les avant-postes lors des phases finales. Aussi bien en Préfinale qu’en Finale, Hanley s’est
rapidement échappé seul en tête tandis que la bagarre faisait rage pour les places d’honneur. Janker terminait 2e de la préfinale devant le Hollandais Martijn Van Leeuwen (CRG-TM Racing-Vega), mais Joyner,
le Champion du Monde 2013, est revenu en 2e position de la Finale devant Tiene.
Le trio gagnant de la Finale occupe aussi les 3 premières places du classement provisoire du Championnat d’Europe CIK-FIA de KF, Hanley leader avec 35 points, Joyner second (27 points) et Tiene 3e (25
points).
Kenny Roosens crève l’écran de la KF-Junior
Pour sa 3e saison dans la catégorie des jeunes de 13 à 15 ans, le Belge Kenny Roosens a haussé le
niveau de ses ambitions. Intégré depuis l’an dernier au team VDK Racing, une structure familiale aussi
simple que passionnée, Kenny a bien mûri. Il s’est montré capable d’utiliser au mieux son châssis Kosmic
à moteur Parilla équipé de pneus LeCont d’un bout à l’autre de la Compétition portugaise. Meilleur
temps de son groupe, mais 2e au classement des Essais Qualificatifs, Kenny n’a plus quitté la 1ère place
ensuite. Leader des Manches Qualificatives grâce à ses 4 victoires d’affilée, il a aussi remporté la Préfinale avant de conclure par une nouvelle victoire en Finale. Le Poleman Sami Worship (FA Kart-VortexLecont) a ensuite peiné pour suivre le rythme, sans doute à cause de ses débuts récents en KF-Junior,
laissant Christian Lundgaard (Tony Kart-Vortex-Lecont) revenir en 2e position à l’issue des Manches.
L’Indonésien Putra Perdana Minang (Tony Kart-Vortex-Lecont) a créé la surprise en terminant la Préfinale
au 2e rang devant Lundgaard. L’Indien Kush Maini (Tony Kart-Vortex-Lecont) était en bagarre pour la 3e
position dans le dernier tour de la Finale quand il a éliminé son rival Davide Vidales (Energy/TM) au cours
d’une manœuvre dangereuse qui lui a valu d’être exclu de la Compétition. Le tout jeune Brésilien Caio
Collet (Kosmic-Vortex-Lecont) a donc récupéré la 2e place après le podium grâce à ses étonnantes qualités pour un débutant en KF-Junior, tandis que Lundgaard prenait la 3e place de la Course et la seconde
au classement provisoire du Championnat d’Europe avec ses 25 points, derrière Roosens (35 points) et
devant Collet (20 points).
La prochaine Compétition du Championnat d’Europe CIK-FIA KF et KF-Junior se tiendra en Angleterre sur
le circuit de PF international du 18 au 21 juin 2015.
