BURGUNDY
The 2010 Vintage Report
Well worth the effort!
The 2010 vintage in Burgundy is a success, despite difficult climatic
conditions. In Burgundy, 2000 years of history have indeed allowed the vine
and man to adapt to all situations. Far from being a question of chance,
this longevity is proof that the vine has found its ideal land in this northern
vineyard, whilst adapting to the climatic changes.
Here, making wine is an art form which has nothing to do with ease.
The Burgundy winegrowers demonstrate judgement, a great capacity to
adapt, and the expertise to get the best out of each vintage.
The latest meteorological forecasting tools, analytical controls and tasting
the grapes are all factors for anticipating and rationalising each of the key
steps leading up to the harvest.
Tasting the grapes was particularly crucial this year, allowing winegrowers
to monitor the change in the aromatic potential of each plot, one of the
strengths of this vintage. Here, the level of maturity and the health of the
vines were key in choosing the date of the harvest. Although the harvest
usually takes place by colour (traditionally red then white), the winegrowers,
attentive to the quality, alternated between red and white plots.
The small yields obtained are both a result of the winegrowers’ controlled
pruning, the coulure and millerandage caused by the climatic conditions
in the spring, and the strict selection performed both on the vine and in
the cellar. The winemakers were then able to adjust their technique on the
harvested grapes to unveil the fine balance between sugar and acidity,
without harming the aromatic expression.
There is no doubt that the 2010 Burgundies hold some nice surprises for
wine lovers! Since the harvest came to an end at the beginning of October,
it is still too soon to give a definitive judgement on the wines of this vintage,
although there are already some dominant characteristics.

T
he Latours have been vintners in Burgundy since
the 17th century, slowly building a unique Domaine of 125 acres. Maison Louis Latour currently has the largest Grand Cru property in all
of the Cote d’Or with a total of 71.58 acres. The
vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to
Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
A
ll of the grapes from the estate vineyards are
vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of
Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton.
The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in
France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A
unique rail-way system with elevators allows the
entire wine-making process to be achieved by the
use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985, Louis Latour has been
selling the wines from its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour.
T
he Latour family founded the ‘Maison de négoce’,
an important shipping company, in 1797, and it
is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune
to this day. The company is unique in Burgundy in that
it is still family-owned and family-run, having been
passed down from father to son for over ten generations.
T
o celebrate our Bicentenary in 1797, we published a commemorative book and were admitted into the
exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only accepts companies that are leaders in their respective fields, remain family owned, have a history
of 200 years’ experience and still bear the name
of their founder. There are only approximately 30 of these companies in the world.
M
aison Louis Latour ships its wines to over 60 countries worldwide. These world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs can be
found on the most famous dining tables around the globe.
L
ouis-Fabrice Latour, born the 29th of February, 1964 in Beaune (in the
Côte d’Or, France), is the son of Louis Paul Latour, current Chairman of
Maison Louis Latour. He has the distinct honor of serving as the 7th Louis
to manage the family wineries. Louis-Fabrice Latour is a graduate
of the Paris Institute of Political Science (class of 1985). After graduation, he
worked a year at Paribas in Paris as Attaché de Direction. He became General
Managing Director of Maison Louis Latour in 1999 and has also been the President of the “Syndicat des Négociants en Vins Fins de Bourgogne” since 2003.
Louis-Fabrice Latour is an active member of the “Bureau Interprofessionnel des
Vins de Bourgogne”, the F.E.V.S. (Fédération des Exportateurs de Vins et Spiritueux de France), and the Hénokiens Association in Paris (only open to independent companies that have been family owned for over 200 years).
