Introduction
I. Comment voyons-nous ? (De Mello, Selected Writings)
Un jour un Guru demanda à ses disciples comment ils pouvaient dire si la nuit avait commencé et la journée
était terminée.
Le premier répondit : « quand, en voyant un animal à distance, tu peux dire, si c’est une vache ou un
cheval ».
« Non », affirma le Guru.
Le deuxième répondit : « quand en regardant un arbre de loin, tu peux dire s’il s’agit d’un manguier ou d’un
figuier ».
« Non », répondit le Guru.
Exaspérés les disciples demandèrent : « Alors c’est quand ? ».
Le Guru répondit : « c’est quand en regardant un homme quelconque en face, tu reconnais en lui ton frère ;
quand en regardant une femme quelconque en face, tu reconnais en elle ta sœur. Si tu ne peux pas faire
cela, peu importe l’heure qu’il est en plein jour, il est encore nuit pour toi ».
II. « Suis-je le gardien de mon frère ? (Gn 4) … Oui!

La relation avec l’autre est le test de ma relation avec Dieu : (1 Jn 2,11)
Dieu, en me confiant mon frère, nous responsabilise l’un envers l’autre (coresponsabilité). Abel
(hbl) nous fait penser à la vapeur, à la respiration, la vanité ; la fragilité de l’existence humaine et
au besoin d’être soutenu !
Gommer la différence c’est tuer la vie. La diversité est importante et nécessaire (1 Cor 12; Rom 12).
Attention à l’autre ; c’est mon frère !
III. Pour la prière personnelle (en trois temps)
1° temps : pour la méditation personnelle, je propose de prendre l’un ou l’autre de ces textes
mentionnés ci-dessus :
- Gn 4,1-9[16] : Caïn et Abel : la violence, la sanction, la protection.
- 1 Cor 12,1-11 : les dons de l’Esprit.
- 1 Cor 12,12-31 : diversité des membres et unité du corps.
- Rom 12,1-21 : une vie nouvelle … plusieurs membres en un seul corps (v. 4).
2° Temps : reconnaissant la diversité des dons du Seigneur à moi et à mes frères, je note :
- le don que je reconnais en moi pour la construction de cette communauté ;
- le don que j’apprécie chez les autres membres de la communauté;
- les attitudes qui favoriseraient l’échange mutuel des nos dons ;
- quelles attitudes éviterais-je pour que l’échange mutuel ne se bloque pas ?
3° Temps : au moment de l’Eucharistie
- Avant l’Eucharistie, pour ceux qui le désirent, écrire en quelques mots :
 Sur une feuille blanche les attitudes qui aideront l’échange mutuel des dons dans notre
communauté;
 Sur une feuille jaune, les attitudes qui bloqueraient l’échange mutuel des dons dans la
communauté.
- Durant l’Eucharistie, nous les offrirons au Seigneur pour demander son aide.

Introduction
I. “How we see”: (From De Mello, Selected Writings)
A Guru asked his disciples how they could tell when the night had ended and the day begun.
One said, “when you see an animal in the distance and can tell whether it is a cow or a horse”.
“No”, said the Guru.
“When you look at a tree in the distance and can tell if it is a mango tree or a fig tree”.
“Wrong again”, said the Guru.
“Well then, what is it?” asked the exasperated disciples.
“When you look into the face of any man and recognize your brother in him; when you look into the face of
any woman and recognize in her your sister. If you cannot do this, no matter what time it is by the sun it is
still night”.
II. “Am I my Brother’s keeper?” (Gen 4) … Yes!

My relationship with the other is the test of the truth of my relationship with God (1 Jn 2,11);
God, by giving me my brother, makes us responsible towards each other (co-responsibility); Abel’s
name (hbl) … vapour, vanity … existing in relationship to the other!
Smoothing out the differences is killing life itself; we are gifted differently in order that we
complete each other and so that we should need each other (1 Cor 12; Rom 12).
Be attentive to the other; he is my brother!
III. For the personal prayer (in 3 key moments)
1° Choose one of the following texts indicated below:
- Gn 4,1-9[16] : Cain and Abel : violence, punishment, protection.
- 1 Cor 12,1-11 : the gifts of the Spirit of God.
- 1 Cor 12,12-31 : diversity of the parts of the body.
- Rom 12,1,1-21 : New life … several parts of the one body (v. 4).
2° Acknowledging the diversity of the gifts of the Lord to me and to my brothers, I note:
- what I consider to be God’s gift to me for this community?
- what I consider to some of the gifts of God to other members of this community?
- the attitudes that will encourage the mutual exchange of our gifts?
- which attitudes should I avoid in order not to block the mutual exchange of our gifts?
3° During the Eucharist
- Before the Eucharist, for those who wish, please write in a few words:
 on a white piece of paper: the attitudes I think that will foster the mutual exchange/sharing of
gifts in our community;
 on a yellow piece of paper, the attitudes that will block the mutual exchange of gifts in the
community.
- During the Eucharist, we will offer them to the Lord and also ask for his strength.
