EDITORIAL / FOREWORD
C‟est avec beaucoup de retard que paraît cette lettre d‟information de la DAFA. La
principale raison en est le départ de son concepteur et rédacteur habituel, David Jurie, dont le
dynamisme et l‟entrain permettaient d‟assurer une certaine régularité dans la publication. Cette
13ème lettre d‟information est la moindre des formes d‟hommage que nous puissions lui rendre.
Pendant cette longue période la DAFA a continué à mener à bien ses missions
habituelles mais a du également, en soutien à nos collègues Afghans de l‟Institut National
d‟Archéologie, s‟impliquer dans des opérations relevant de l‟archéologie de « sauvetage ».
Il aura fallu trente ans à la France pour définir une politique cohérente permettant de
gérer l‟interaction entre la protection du patrimoine culturel et l‟impératif du développement,
l‟Afghanistan découvre ce qui apparaît pour beaucoup être des subtilités qui n‟ont cours que
dans des pays à très haut niveau de développement et se trouve mis au défi de trouver
immédiatement des solutions.
La nécessité de formation des personnels afghans se fait donc encore plus pressante
que ce soit pour la mise en place d‟une carte archéologique de l‟Afghanistan qui soit un
instrument de gestion du patrimoine archéologique ou pour la constitution d‟équipes
d‟intervention capable de réaliser les diagnostics, les surveillances et les fouilles rendues
indispensables par les projets d‟aménagement.
C‟est enfin l‟information et la sensibilisation du public afghan qui revêt de plus en plus un
caractère d‟urgence que ce soit par des expositions ou des actions pédagogiques vers le public
scolaire. C‟est en effet, avant tout, les afghans qui par l‟intérêt qu‟ils porteront à leur patrimoine
en assureront la survie.
An unusually late issue of the DAFA‟s newsletter. The main reason for this is the
departure of David Jurie who created it and whose dynamism and impetus were the guarantee
of a regular editing. This 13th Newsletter is the smallest of the rewards he deserves for his effort.
Meanwhile, the DAFA still carried on its usual duties but also had to get involve in
operations of „archaeological rescue‟ in order to support our Afghani colleagues from the
National Institute of Archaeology.
It took France thirty years to set up a coherent policy to deal simultaneously with the
preservation of national heritage and the necessities of socio-economical development. Today
Afghanistan is facing the subtlety challenges of what could be perceived as the concerns of
highly developed countries and is committed to find immediate and lasting solutions.
The need for training Afghani people is ever more pressing first to create an
archaeological map of Afghanistan which could facilitate the management of Afghani heritage as
well as help coordinate field teams that could assess needs, supervise and conduct
indispensable excavations for project developments.
Communication and raising awareness about cultural heritage among Afghani people is
ultimately the most important task we are tackling through exhibitions or educational actions
aimed at pupils. In fact, the interest Afghanis will hold towards their own heritage will insure its
survival.
CHANTIERS EN COURS / CURRENT PROJECTS
Mission archéologique de Bactres / Archaeological mission of Balkh
Du 9 Octobre au 2 Décembre 2008 la DAFA a pu mener à bien sa sixième campagne de fouille
à Bactres. Cette mission était composée de 11 chercheurs français et de 5 archéologues de
l‟Institut National d‟Archéologie.
Au Bala Hissar de Balkh la fouille a été poursuivie et étendue vers l‟Est par l‟ouverture
d‟un nouveau chantier qui a été l‟occasion d‟étudier une tour ronde kouchane pouvant appartenir
au même ensemble de construction que le mur dit « serpentin ».
Sur le chantier du rempart Nord notre attention s‟est avant tout porté sur la fouille, le
prélèvement et l‟étude de peintures murales repérées en 2005.

Nous avons à cette occasion pu recueillir, associées aux fragments peints, des monnaies
sassanides dont l‟étude devrait permettre de donner de précieuses données chronologiques.
Dans le même secteur, des tranchées de reconnaissance implantées à l‟intérieur de l‟espace
limité par les remparts ont permis de repérer des niveaux contenant un matériel céramique
hellénistique, premier indice de l‟extension de cette période vers le Nord de la Ville.
Tepe Zargaran :

Au Tepe Zargaran, l‟extension des travaux dans le chantier 6 a permis d‟observer des
niveaux bien stratifiés livrant un matériel céramique hellénistique. Dans le chantier 15 le
dégagement de la vaste construction kouchano-sassanide, repérée lors des campagnes
précédentes a été poursuivie. Un ensemble très cohérent de peintures murales a été dégagée
d‟une des pièces de cette construction.
Between the 9th of October and the 2nd of December 2008, the DAFA was able to
successfully conduct a sixth excavation campaign in Balkh. The team included 11 French
researchers and 5 archaeologists from the National Institute of Archaeology.
At the Bala Hissar of Balkh, excavations were extended towards the East. The opening of
a new excavation was an opportunity to study a round Kushan tower that could belong to the
same group of construction as the “serpentine” wall.
On the excavation around the Northern walls, our attention was given to the extraction
and the study of murals found in 2005. We gathered samples from the painted fragments and
Sassanid coins the study of which will give us important chronological information. In the same
area, trenches dug inside the walled area have allowed us to find levels containing Hellenistic
pottery material, the first clue concerning the northern extension of the city around that period.
In Tepe Zargaran the extension of works on site 6 shows stratified levels with Hellenistic
ceramic. In site 15, the clearing of the vast Kushan-Sassanid construction, noticed during
previous missions was continued. A group of very coherent murals paintings was cleared from a
room of the building.
Mission archéologique de Cheshme Shafâ / Archaeological mission of Cheshme Shafâ
Du 14 avril au 22 Mai 2009 la DAFA a organisé une deuxième campagne de fouille sur le site de
Cheshme Shafâ. Cette mission était composée de 7 chercheurs français (dont un préhistorien
V. Marcon) et de 5 archéologues de l‟Institut National d‟Archéologie.
Cheshme Shafâ / Kafir Qala :
Chantier sur la fortification et l‟occupation pré-mongole
Les pluies abondantes qui se sont abattues sur la région ont retardé nos travaux et ont
également eu pour conséquences la destruction d‟une partie de la mosquée de Cheshme Shafâ.
Nous avons pu cependant poursuivre l‟étude des aménagements islamiques sur le versant sud
du Kafir Qala et étudier les abords de l‟autel du feu.
Les premiers états de construction des ouvrages avancés construits sur le versant nord ont été
datés de la période bactro-achéménide grâce à une série de sondages réalisés par une équipe
dirigée par N. Engel.
Le bâtiment kouchan partiellement dégagé en 2008 a fait l‟objet d‟un dégagement plus large par
un groupe d‟ouvriers dirigé par P. Mongne.
Au pied et au sommet du Kouh-i-Albrouz des séries de sondages ont permis de recueillir du
matériel céramique bactro-achéménide, fournissant donc des éléments supplémentaires pour
dater les aménagements et les constructions de cette partie du site.
Le site de Cheshme Shafâ est actuellement menacé par un projet d‟aménagement
routier qui prévoit la destruction de parties importantes du rempart bactro-achéménide ainsi que
l‟élargissement, par dynamitage, des gorges de la Balkh-Ab.

Samwhan
From the 14th of April to the 22nd of May 2009 the DAFA organised a second round of
excavations on the Cheshme Shafâ site. This mission was composed of 7 French researchers
(including the pre-history specialist V. Marcon) and of 5 archaeologists from the National
Institute of Archaeology. The abundant rainfall over the region delayed works on site and also
destroyed in part the mosque of Cheshme Shafâ. We were able, however, to continue the study
of Islamic structures on the southern side of Kafir Qala and study the fire altar. The first
constructions on the northern side were dated from the Bactro-achaemenid period thanks to a
series of surveys conducted by N. Engel‟s team.
A team of workers lead by P. Mongne uncovered larger parts of the Kushan construction
partially discovered in 2008.
At the foot and the top of Kuh-i-Albruz, a series of surveys allowed us to gather
Bactro-achaemenid pot shard, giving us more elements to date the constructions on this part of
the site.
The Cheshme Shafâ site is currently threatened by a road construction project that would
involve the destruction of a large part of the walls and an enlargement by dynamite of the
Balkh-Ab gorges.
Mission archéologique de Bamiyan / Archaeological mission at Bamiyan
Le 2 juillet, l‟équipe du Dr Zemaryalai Tarzi a entamé sa huitième campagne sur le site de
Bamiyan. A. Vanleene, doctorante, archéologue, V. Brice, master, archéologue, A. Marguier,
doctorant, archéologue, M. Fautrez, architecte composent l‟équipe française. Leur intervention
sur le terrain durera jusqu‟au 4 août 2009.
The 2nd of July, the team of Dr Zemaryalai Tarzi begun its eighth mission on the site of Bamiyan.
A. Vanleene, preparing a PHD and archaeologist, V. Brice, archaeologist, A. Marguier, PHD and
archaeologist, M. Fautrez, architect, form the French team. Their field work will last till the 4th of
August 2009.
Reconnaissance dans le Wakhan / Preliminary survey in Wakhan
Du 11 au 14 août 2008 une reconnaissance a été opérée par Roland Besenval et Philippe
Marquis dans la région de Sarhad Broghill (Wakhan) avec pour but d‟apprécier les possibilités
de mener une campagne de prospections et de sondages dans cette région qui jusqu‟à présent
n‟a fait l‟objet d‟aucune fouille. Le montage d‟une opération dans ce secteur dans les prochaines
années parait tout à fait envisageable.
Between the 11th and the 14th of August 2008 a preliminary survey was conducted by Roland
Besenval and Philippe Marquis in the Sarhad Broghill (Warkhan) with the aim of assessing the
possibilities for excavations and surveys in the region which until now has not been explored by
any archaeological excavation. Setting up an archaeological expedition in that region in the next
few years seems a possibility.
Travaux à Noh Gombad / Noh Gombad project
Du 25 au 29 Avril 2009 une mission composée de C. Adle, A. Boustany, U. Tonietti a procédé à
une série de mesures et d‟examens techniques afin de préparer les futures campagnes de
consolidation d‟une des arches de la mosquée Noh Gonbad.
Between the 25th and 29th of April a mission conducted by C.Adle, A. Boustany, U. Tonietti
gathered a series of measurements and held technical tests in order to prepare future
consolidation work on an arch of the Noh Gonbad mosque.
Travaux de sauvetage à Mès Aynak (Logar) / Rescue operations at Mès Aynak (Logar)

La DAFA a apporté son aide technique et son expertise à l‟Institut National Archéologie
Afghan pour le montage d‟une opération de sauvetage archéologique dans la province du
Logar. Le site de Mès Aynak est une mine de cuivre, exploitée au moins dès la période
kouchane. De nombreux stupas y ont été également repérés ainsi que des constructions en
briques et pierres, l‟ensemble de la zone archéologique couvrant plusieurs centaines
d‟hectares. Ce site exceptionnel sera détruit par l‟exploitation de la mine de cuivre par une
compagnie chinoise en avril 2010.

The DAFA brought its technical support and expertise to the Afghan National Institute of
Archaeology in order to conduct a rescue operation in the Logar province. The Mès Aynak
site is a copper mine that has been in use since the Kushan period. Numerous stupas have
also been found there, as well as buildings in brick and stone. The archaeological zone
covers more than hundred hectars. In April 2010, a Chinese company is going to resume the
mining of copper here, thus destroying this exceptional site.
Etude géomorphologique / Geomorphologicals Study
E. Fouache, Professeur de géographie physique à Paris X, assisté de C. Coussot, docteur en
géo archéologie, ont procédé au cours du mois de Novembre 2008 à une campagne de
prélèvements en vue d‟effectuer des datations OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence) qui
seront réalisées au Canada dans le laboratoire du Département des Sciences de la Terre et de
l‟Atmosphère de l‟Université du Québec à Montréal.
E. Fouache, professor of physical geography at Paris X University, assisted by C. Coussot,
doctor in geo-archaeology, collected samples in November 2008, in order to do OSL dating in
Canada, in the laboratory of the Earth and Atmospherical Science Department of the University
of Quebec in Montreal.
Prospection archéologique dans la province de Bactres / Archaeological survey in Balkh
province.
A l‟Automne 2008 et au Printemps 2009 les prospections destinées à compléter l‟inventaire et la
carte archéologique de la province de Balkh ont été poursuivies.
Les mauvaises conditions climatiques ont bloqué l‟accès au site d‟Aq Kupruk où nous avions
prévu de mener une mission de reconnaissance. V. Marcon (préhistorien) s‟est attaché à la
prospection des sites préhistoriques de la région de Cheshme Shafâ. D‟ores et déjà, les
résultats de cette campagne s‟avèrent très prometteurs et justifient une extension de ces
prospections voire même la mise en place d‟une campagne de sondages.
In autumn 2008 and in Spring 2009, surveys with the purpose of finishing the inventory and
archaeological map of the Balkh province were continued.
Due to bad weather conditions which blocked the access to the Aq Kupruk site, the preliminary
survey planned was cancelled. V. Marcon (pre-history specialist) was consequently sent to do
the prehistoric survey of the Cheshme Shafâ region. The surveys in the region are already full of
promise and justify an extension of work and surveys in the region.
Exposition photo au CCF / Photographic exhibition at the CCF
A l‟initiative de G.Buti, Directeur du Centre Culturel Français une exposition de photographie
prise par la DAFA, intitulée : Carnets de fouille-Cinq années de coopération archéologique
franco-afghane, a été organisée du 18 novembre au 3 décembre 2008 dans les locaux du CCF.
An initiative by G.Buti, Director of the Centre Culturel Français (CCF : French Cultural Centre)
was an exhibition of photographs taken by the DAFA. It was shown in the CCF from the 18th of
November to the 3rd of December under the title „Carnets de fouille-Cinq années de coopération
archéologique franco-afghane‟ (Excavation notebooks – Five years of Franco-Afghani
cooperation).
Exposition photographique au Musée National / Photographic exhibition at The National
Museum
Grâce au don par le Musée Guimet de clichés des objets présentés dans l‟exposition
« Afghanistan, les trésors retrouvés », la DAFA avec le concours financier du SCAC va
présenter au public Afghan dans les salles du Musée National, une sélection de photographies
de pièces remarquables du patrimoine archéologique afghan. Une préfiguration de cet
événement sera donnée lors de la cérémonie du 14 juillet à l‟Ambassade de France.
Thanks to the generous donation by the Guimet Museum of photographs of objects from the
exhibition “Afghanistan, Hidden Treasures”, the DAFA with the financial support of the SCAC will
be showing to the Afghani public, in one of the rooms of The National Museum, a photographic
selection of remarquable pieces of Afghani heritage. A preview of the event will be given during
the 14th of July celebration at the French embassy.
COOPERATION / COOPERATION
Accueil des étudiants afghans sur les chantiers/ Practical field trips for Afghani students
Grâce à un financement du SCAC, la DAFA a pu organiser pour quatre groupes d‟étudiants en
archéologie de Kaboul une visite des sites archéologiques du Nord de l‟Afghanistan ainsi qu‟une
initiation à la fouille archéologique. Cette opération devrait être renouvelée dans les années
futures.
Thanks to the financial support of the SCAC, the DAFA was able to send four groups of
Archeology students in Kabul on a visit of archaeological sites in the North of Afghanistan and
initiate them to excavation work. This operation will be renewed in the future.
Formation de restaurateurs / Training courses for conservationists
Deux sessions de formations de restaurateurs ont été organisées par la DAFA en collaboration
avec le Musée National :
Du 3 au 11 septembre 2008 une session animée par A-L. Goron a été consacrée au
dessalement et à la consolidation des sculptures. Du 17 au 22 novembre 2008 E. Checroun a
animé une session consacrée à la conservation et la restauration des peintures murales.
A-L. Goron a également pris en charge la formation d‟une étudiante en archéologie à la
conservation-restauration des objets, au cours du mois d‟Octobre 2008.
Two training sessions for conservationists were organises by the DAFA in collaboration with the
National Museum:
From the 3rd to The 11th of September 2008 A-L. Goron chaired a training session on
desalinisation and consolidation of sculptures.
From the 17th to The 22nd of November 2008 E. Checroun chaired a session on the restoration
and conservation of mural paintings.
A-L. Goron also trained a female archaeology student in the restoration-conservation of objects
during the month of October 2008.

Roland Besenval et Philippe Marquis ont donné le 12 Mars 2009 une conférence sur les
activités de la DAFA dans le cadre du séminaire de Licence de M.François Villeneuve à Paris I.

Gilles Doronsoro, a researcher at the Carnegie Foundation was welcomed by the DAFA from the
20th of March to the 10th of April 2009.
