M. Jean Mayrand
« It is with a great sense of gratitude that I accept the honorific title of “Master of innovation
and leadership in the world of music” from the Quebec chapter of the Canadian Institute of Steel
Construction. As guest of honour at this year’s gala, allow me to take this opportunity to
highlight the essential contribution of the steel industry to the world of art and music that is so
beautifully demonstrated in the original design and construction of the Maison symphonique de
Montréal, home to the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal since 2011. The success of many
great civic and cultural institutions begins with a consideration of the physical space they will
occupy on the urban plan, and how these structures interact with the cultural and economic life
of their milieu. Creativity in building design at this stage in the planning is a crucial ingredient
in the future success of these institutions. The unique character, beauty and originality of the
structure have significantly contributed to the OSM’s ability to carry out our missions of
accessibility and artistic excellence. We at the OSM salute the CISC’s mission of leadership and
innovation in the field of steel construction, as well as the important contribution of this industry
to the furtherance of music and art in Quebec» Quote from Maestro Kent Nagano
Many distinguished guests were present; cocktails were served at the sound of a string
quartet as over 300 guests started arriving. The CISC-ICCA Design Awards Gala is an
annual event through which the Institute rewards teams that carry out complex and
innovative projects in steel. The Design Award is unique because it is awarded jointly to
the owner, Architect, Engineer, contractor, fabricator or detailer who worked on the
projects. A commemorative plaque is given to the winning teams. This tribute highlights
the beauty of steel and how Architects, Engineers and developers can best utilize steel
to improve their projects. Videos of the finalists were shown and the winners were
announced.
