Pour cette nouvelle édition de la marche
annuel « In the footsteps of the 82nd
Airborne Division » la Bloody Bucket s’était
convertie
pour
l’occasion
en
28th
Reconnaissance Troop.
Comme chaque année peu furent les
« courageux » appelés à faire cette épreuve de
force à travers champs, ruisseaux et forets, le
tout avec le paquetage sur le dos !
Noirefontaine 23-24th February 2008
For the new edition of this annual march “In
the footsteps of the 82nd Airborne
Division” the Bloody Bucket had converted
itself into the 28th Reconnaissance Troop.
Like every year few were those brave enough
to participate to this “hike” trough the fields
and forests of our “Ardennes”. Kick-off was
given at 0900 at the Noirefontaine Farm.
The march would take our fully geared
“Keystoners” in a big loop through the villages
of Lierneux, Reharmont, Basse-Bodeux, Fosse,
Petit-Halleux, Rochelinval, Dairomont back to
Noirefontaine: a total of +/- 15 miles. At the
second village on our itinerary (Fosse) the reenactment group Duty First had set up for the
occasion several displays, transforming the
village into “Fosse 1945”: an almost live-like
“crossroad” of American troop movements… .

Le départ fut donné vers 09h00 à la ferme de
Noirefontaine (Lierneux).
Le parcours allait nous ramener via les villages
de Reharmont, Basse-Bodeux, Fosse, PetitHalleux, Rochelinval et Dairomont vers le
point de départ à Noirefontaine : 22km pour
nos 4 « Keystoners ».
Premier point d’arrêt fut Fosse, ou la Duty
First s’était donné à un véritable tour de force à
refaire des dioramas de façon à représenter le
village telle qu’il aurait pu être en 1945… .

Un beau display qui sans doute à demandé
beaucoup de travail.
Après une pause de midi bien méritée notre
patrouille repris son chemin vers l’arrivée.
Au cours d’une montée de plus de 5km un de
nos hommes du abandonner avec des crampes
dans les jambes.
After a short lunch-break our troops headed of
towards the final arrival point.

Le Sgt. en train de fumer “ une petite”, pendant
que le Pvt.Bury se demande ce qu’il fout là…
While the Sgt.is having ” a smoke” , Pvt.Bury is
wondering “what the hell am I doing here?”…
During this second part of our trail on of our
“Keystoners” had to abandon formation due to
cramps in his legs…. Finally our objective was
reached at 1600: the 28th Recon’s. had
completed their mission!

A little rest at a « blockhaus »…
C’est après presque 7 heures de marche que
nos 3 rescapés arrivèrent à destination : le 28th
Recon.Tr. avait réussi sa mission!

The next day was dedicated to the visit of the
new museum “Baugnez 44 Historical Center”
near Ligneuville. This museum, which opened
December 18th 2007, retraces the famous
episode well known as the “Massacre of
Malmedy” near the crossroad at Baugnez: on
December 16th 1944 more than 80 American
prisoners were murdered in a field nearby the
crossroad after an unfortunate encounter with
the Kampfgruppe Peiper. This museum of
more than 850m² offers 16 displays, audio
guide in 4 languages, a 25min. movie, etc….

Le lendemain notre équipe visita le nouveau
musée « Baugnez 44 Historical Center» près
de Ligneuville : musée érigé quasi à l’endroit
même ou eu lieu le « Massacre de Malmedy »,
le fameux carrefour ou plus de 80 prisonniers
américains furent massacrés après une
rencontre malheureuse avec le Kampfgruppe
Peiper. Ce musée dite « de nouvelle
génération » offre une vision complète des
événements qui se sont produits le 16
décembre dans cette région… : audio-guide en
4 langues, 850m² avec 16 dioramas, film,
espace « hommage » aux victimes, etc.… .
A voir !
C’est par cette visite et un dernier verre que ce
premier weekend reconstit de la Bloody
Bucket s’acheva… .

After the visit and a last drink the first reenactment weekend 2008 of the Bloody Bucket
had come to an end….
Our troops returned back home, satisfied of
their weekend.
