Rules for the “Speed Dating”
Objectives:
Speed dating is a dating method that has hitherto proven successful.
With today’s speed dating event we hope to meet the following
objectives of the Social Platform:

Clearinghouse. To act as clearinghouse facilitating the matching
of demand and the supply of staff´s time for social services.

Knowledge-sharing. To facilitate the exchange of ideas,
experiences and challenges among those members actively
involved in social activities.
Instructions:
1. Should you be representing an organisation, please check out
the seating plan at the entrance and join your desk.
2. Should you be a participant at the jamboree (“visitor”), please
make sure you have received the booklet introducing the
different organisations that are represented here this
afternoon. Please take time to go through it to decide which
organisation you would like to meet. Please include more than
3 in your list in case the maximum number of participants at
each desk has been reached because of very high demand.
3. The location of desks is displayed at the entrance of the room
and in the booklet introducing the various organisations
occupying a desk at the speed dating.
4
4. A bell will ring after 15 minutes to signal the end of the round.
The association representatives will remain seated, while the
“visitors” will move to their next table/NGO.
5. The break between 2 rounds will last 5 minutes to allow
rotation and give time to the daters to take a few notes.
6. Please head to next table (organisation) as soon as possible in
order not to delay the event.

Project :
ADA supports inclusive finance actors so that poor people can
sustainably improve their lives and eventually become
independent. In order to achieve this, ADA:
- develops innovative financial products and services,
accessible and adapted to the poor
- supports the professional development of microfinance
institutions through management tools and trainings
- advises the Luxembourg Microfinance and Development
Fund SICAV (LMDF)
- contributes to research in inclusive finance and brings
together public and private actors to support sector
evolution
- learns, innovates and improves herself through knowledge
management
7
Achievements:
Mia Adams-Bormans and her husband founded ADA almost 20
years ago. They were convinced that microfinance offered an
effective form of assistance to help poor people in southern
countries make their way out of poverty. As a pioneer in this field,
ADA has build a strong network of partners over the years. Today
ADA’s projects strengthen the professional capabilities of 150
microfinance institutions, helping them better serve 5.000.000
beneficiaries with accessible and affordable financial services that
improve their lives.

Project :
The association Little Plus / Toutes à l’école Luxembourg aims to help
provide education for children in need around the world and their
families, by all legal means. The association operates in support of and in
collaboration with the French association “Toutes à l’école”. In July
2012, Little Plus became “Toutes à l’école Luxembourg”.
The association is seeking to develop, in Cambodia, a high level of
schooling for disadvantaged girls, enabling them to become free women
and educated mothers.
The creation of "Toutes à l’école" started with the following observation:
out of all children who are already at school worldwide, only a third are
girls.
Located 12km from Phnom Penh, the school Happy Chandara that we
support was launched in 2005 and aims to train women for reflection
the decision-making positions of tomorrow: some become doctors,
9
teachers, judges, entrepreneurs... Others will undertake vocational
training and will be supported until they get a job that gives them
freedom and dignity.
Achievements:
The school “Happy Chandara” hosts as of today 645 students and will
have more than a thousand students once the graduating class has
opened. 100 new girls enter the school each year. They attend school
from primary school level and will be supported until the end of their
studies and to their first job.
Little Plus/Toutes à l’école has done fundraising for specific projects
such as “Health and prevention at Happy Chandara” to enable the
students at the school to have medical care, to improve the quality of
the health service offered and to develop health and sex education.

Project :

Project :
The IDAY network acts to defend the right to a quality basic education of
all African children. IDAY acts mainly through the empowerment of
organisation of the African civil society and advocacy campaigns whose
specific goals are decided by national coalitions. In addition, IDAY has 4
multinational projects: 1) Stopping malaria with Artemisia annua (a
highly effective Chinese plant and improving nutrition in schools by
creating school gardens : projects are underway in DCR, Burundi,
Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Kenya but are ready to be
started in any of the other 18 IDAY-member countries. 2) The legal
recognition and alphabetization of domestic workers: this project is
running in 6 East and Central African countries with training centres
existing in Burundi, Rwanda and DRC. The project aims to: get workers
aged less than 14 back to school, provide functional literacy and
professional training to illiterate young workers and guarantee them the
same rights as those provided for other categories of workers. 3) Provide
proper education to children in prison: starting in Cameroon and Kivu
but expandable to all other members; 4) Enhance education in post-
13
conflict areas (in preparation). Many other individual projects promoted
by IDAY members are published on our Project Bank (www.iday.org)
including the training of youngsters with disabilities, low-cost renovation
of private schools, equipping school kitchens with energy-saving stoves.
Achievements:
Despite its young age (5 years), IDAY has achieved several goals: The
anti-malaria project is now protecting more than 40 000 children and
their academic results have significantly improved; Kenyatta University
has signed with IDAY a memorandum of understanding to conduct a 5year research programme on the medical, agricultural and social impact
of Artemisia annua in schools. IDAY has put on the map the whole issue
of legalising and educating African domestic workers, training more than
1000 youngsters and thanks to IDAY’s human rights campaigns, the
Burundian government is currently discussing a law that will recognize
domestic workers in the same way as any other professionals. Surveys to
measure the number of illiterate domestic workers and jailed children
deprived of education are under preparation together with UNICEF and
Defence for Children International (DCI). Finally, discussions are
underway with the Ministry of Education of Burkina Faso to conduct a
general survey of the quality of education in the country.

Target country:
Project :
The Therapeutic and Leisure Centre “Land of friendship and Peace” in
Kakrinje. The centre combines a holiday/leisure centre with pony-riding.
Such activity has a ludic value for the handicapped children, but is also
of pedagogic and therapeutic importance, and teaches them how to
strengthen their social skills and learn how to interact with others. The
centre can host up to 100 children, priority being given to orphans or
war victims.
Achievements:
OdB has been involved in a number of activities to support orphan
children affected by the events in Bosnia, and, more generally, to
promote a new understanding between the peoples of Bosnia.
Scholarship programme: (now discontinued) Some 30 children received
financial support to pursue their studies (elementary, secondary and
university level). This programme operated in close cooperation with
17
“Obrazovanje gradi BiH”, a local Bosnian association.
Vacation programme: Young orphans from Bosnia spend several
summer weeks a year in Luxembourg, where they are hosted by local
families. Needless to say, the children greatly enjoy these vacations in a
new and trouble-free environment. But it is also clear that such stays
are fairly costly. It may be more efficient to have the children spend
more of their holidays outside of Sarajevo, rather than flying them to
Luxembourg for a few weeks in the summer, and leaving them confined
to much more rudimentary conditions for the rest of the year.

Project :
The Nest reaches out to prevent the children of imprisoned mothers
from fighting for survival on the street. The Nest rescues affected
children and improves their living conditions.
The project is about the rehabilitation and reintegration of these
children in society and with their families.
The future project is to develop even further the reintegration of the
mothers into society, giving them training and education.
Achievements:
The Halfway House provides emergency accommodation for up to 10
mothers with young children upon their release from prison. Along with
counselling and civic education, the women rebuild their self-confidence
for reintegration into society.
21
The following services are offered: legal assistance, counselling, support
with bureaucratic matters. The mothers are enrolled in credit schemes,

Stëmm vun der Strooss is a non-profit organisation that tries to defend
the interests of socially excluded people. It helps, informs and
represents medical, psychological and/or socially dependent people who
receive little or no help from other organisations. It works closely
together with the Red Cross and some of the activities are financed by
the Ministry of Health.
Stëmm vun der Strooss organises different services to cater for the
problems of the socially dependent. Their problems range from
unemployment, drug abuse, alcoholism, mental or physical handicaps or
the lack of understanding of the basics of reading and writing. The nonprofit organisation is active on two levels: social and professional reintegration.
Achievements:
In 2011:

All - a local audience interested in a specific,
eclectic programming (music, culture,
communities,...), but which can be global due
to internet
Luxembourg
Project :
Radio ARA offers diverse programming with a great musical choice.
Shows in Luxembourgish, English, German and French are typical and
often different languages alternate during the same show. Apart from
the English-speaking programming in the morning, the programming of
Radio ARA is done by volunteers. Technical and administrative tasks
behind the scenes are also done by volunteers.
There is always a need for new interested people to join the crew of the
Bistro magazine show, to support an existing team, or under specific
circumstances to launch their own show.
We want to set up an additional transmitter in the south of Luxembourg
and therefore we have to collect appr. €35 000 for equipment and an
est. €600 / month for additional running costs.
Achievements:
28
Radio ARA is Luxembourg's only free radio station with a transmitter
network covering a large part of the country. The support of our
listeners and volunteers, through their skills and their financial
contribution has ensured our independence for already 20 years now.
Radio ARA has a reputation amongst music lovers and specific
communities. It also gives a voice to those which don't have one in
mainstream media.
