Travel opportunities in British Columbia before and after the National Seniors workshop We have lined up several travel options for those who want to plan a unique vacation in and around beautiful British Columbia as part of their trip to National Seniors Week in Vancouver. The options range from discounted air fares to a luxury train trip through the mountains, a Tai Chi cruise to Alaska and a regional workshop in Haida Gwaii. To register for the Haida Gwaii workshop, please contact the folks at Haida Gwaii directly: [email protected] (250) 557-2487. Fax (250) 559-8525 If you wish to book space on the train trip, the cruise or the discounted flights, please contact Pervin Ozselmanoglu, branch manager of Marlin Travel Oakridge Centre in Vancouver. Telephone 604 266-1712. [email protected]. 1. WestJet discount We have negotiated a 10-per-cent discount off WestJet's lowest fares for members flying into and out of Vancouver from May 23 through June 13. The discount is available only through Pervin at Marlin Travel in Vancouver. Westjet requires payment in full at the time of booking and Pervin will need the names of passengers as they appear on a passport or other government-issued ID, dates of birth, mailing address and credit card details. Westjet does allow cancellations up to two hours before departure and charges a $50 penalty. The remainder of the prepaid fare is held by Westjet to be used against future travel costs. You can check Westjet's flight schedules in and out of Vancouver on its Web site, www.westjet.ca 2. Regional workshop in Haida Gwaii Here's an opportunity for an exotic travel experience that most of us might never have in the normal course of events. The Tai Taoist Tai Chi group in Haida Gwaii is hosting a regional workshop and other activities June 8 to 10, a week after National Seniors Week. The Haida Gwaii group promises “a special weekend offering a variety of opportunities to deepen our practice and understanding of these precious healing arts and to have fun together!” Enjoy a banquet with invited guests and entertainment. Glimpse Haida culture and enjoy a scenic tour of the east coast of Graham Island. Events get underway on Friday June 8 with an opening welcome and supper provided by Sandspit members, followed by an open practice at Sandspit Community Hall. The next day, the regional workshop takes place from 9:30 to 4 pm, at the Village of Queen Charlotte Community Hall, followed by a banquet. Sunday June 10 brings a Tai Chi adventure starting with a Taoist Tai Chi set and a short tour of the Haida Gwaii Museum and Haida Heritage Centre. Next comes a drive north along the coast of Graham Island, where participants will visit the scenic rural community of Tlell, admire the views from Port Clemens Village, and visit Naikoon Provincial Park and its famous blow holes. Finally, there will be more Tai Chi on North Beach, where Haida legend says Raven first brought people into the world by coaxing them out of a clamshell. The total cost for the workshop, all meals, and the Adventure Day will be $130 There are two airports on the islands. Air Canada flies to Sandspit and Pacific Coastal Airlines flies to Masset. Air Canada's regular return air fare from Vancouver to Sandspit is approximately $1,000 including taxes, but if we can book 10 or more seats on a flight, we can get a group rate that reduces the cost, including taxes, to about $600 per person for the return trip. To get the discount, you must book through Pervin at Marlin Travel. We are still looking into fare options with Pacific Coastal Airlines and will pass on information as it becomes available. http://www.pacificcoastal.com. An alternative route to the islands is by ferry, travelling from Prince Rupert to Skidegate Landing – about a six- hour ferry crossing. Check out the BC Ferries web site: http://www.bcferries.com or call 1-888-223-3779 for schedule information. 3. Luxury train through the Rocky Mountains Rocky Mountain Rail Tours operates the Rocky Mountaineer passenger trains and offers trip packages that include travel through spectacular mountain country by day, a helicopter flight over the Rockies and overnight stays in comfortable hotels. Our travel agent recommends that members who are interested in this trip consider the tour that begins May 24 in Calgary and gets them to Vancouver in time to make it to Simon Fraser University for the start of National Seniors Week. The trains have dome cars and the scenery throughout the trip, especially through the Rocky Mountains, is dazzling. May 24 is set aside for sightseeing around Calgary and an overnight hotel stay. The next day, the tour heads west toward the mountains. The day includes a helicopter flight over the Rockies in the Kananaskis area, and then on to Banff National Park for a tour that includes Bow Falls and a gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain. After an overnight stay in Banff, passengers will board the Rocky Mountaineer train for a day trip through the most spectacular part of the Rockies, crossing the Continental Divide, traversing the Rogers Pass and ending the day in Kamloops for an overnight stay. The last day of the trip, the train heads to Vancouver through more mountain country, including the steep slopes and rock sheds of the Thompson River and the rushing waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon. Overnight in a Vancouver hotel and early the next morning, it's on to National Seniors Week. The price of the trip varies considerably depending on the level of service chosen. Based on double occupancy, the journey will cost $1,739.77 per person for the operator's “Red Leaf Service” level, $2,307.97 for Silver Leaf Service, and $2,946.61 for Gold Leaf Service. The train operator requires a non-refundable deposit, and full payment 60 days before the departure date. To explore the options, including details of the service levels, check the Web site http://www.rockymountaineer.com. Please book through Pervin at Marlin Travel, who will provide final details and reserve your tour package. 4. Cruise to Alaska Sixteen state rooms are being held for us aboard the ms Zuiderdam, one of Holland America Line's newest cruise ships. It departs Vancouver on Saturday June 2, the day after National Seniors Week ends, for a seven-day return cruise to Alaska and Glacier Bay via the Inside Passage. More rooms can be booked if demand is high. This promises to be a spectacular trip, with the added benefit of scheduled on-board Tai Chi sessions on the ship's sports deck in good weather, and indoors if the weather acts up. But please note that there is some urgency to make your plans soon. You should book with the travel agent before Jan. 31. After that date there will probably be staterooms available, but we can't guarantee that, nor can we guarantee prices after that date. At Vancouver Harbour, passengers will check in starting at noon on Saturday June 2, and the Zuiderdam will cast off at 5 p.m. All day Sunday, it will cruise through the Inside Passage, the sheltered route between the B.C. Mainland and its offshore islands. Much of the trip will be through fjord-like channels lined with mountains, glaciers and untouched rainforest, with good chances of spotting bald eagles and other birds, whales and porpoises, and wildlife such as bears, wolves and deer onshore. On the Monday, the Zuiderdam will cruise through Tracy Arm, a long Alaska fjord known for its glaciers and wildlife. Later Monday, the ship will moor at Juneau, Alaska for shore visits. On Tuesday, the ship visits Skagway for more shore-visit possibilities. On Wednesday, it's on to Glacier Bay, famous for its glaciers, which can sometimes be seen calving – dropping huge sheets of ice into the bay. Glacier Bay is ringed by mountains and is a good spot for viewing whales and other wildlife. On Thursday it's time for shore visits at Ketchikan, Alaska and on Friday the Zuiderdam will cruise south through the Inside Passage, arriving in Vancouver Saturday morning. There is a range of prices, all based on double occupancy: • $1,188 per person for a large inside stateroom. • $1,361 per person for large outside staterooms with obstructed views. • $1,392 per person for large outside staterooms with partial sea views. • Approximately $2,000 per person for two classes of deluxe verandah staterooms. Prices include all meals including room service, but alcoholic beverages are extra. Your trip must be booked through Pervin at Marlin Travel for us to get these rates. A deposit is required at the time of booking, and is refundable up to March 5. More information, including deck plans for the ms Zuiderdam and virtual tours of staterooms can be found at http://www.hollandamerica.com. 5. Additional travel options: We are putting together information about other possible trips around British Columbia that might interest members who want to spend some time exploring B.C. before or after Seniors Week. Details will follow in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!
