The Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced an
ini=a=vetothethirdAfricanArabSummithostedbytheStateofKuwait.Thisini=a=vedescribedanannual
awardbytheStateofKuwaitfortheadvancementofeconomic,social,humanresources,andinfrastructure
developmentintheAfricancon=nent=tledthe"Dr.AbdulrahmanAl-SumaitPrize",aFeraKuwai=physician
whospenthislife=mededicatedtowardshelpingthepoorinAfricainthefieldofhealthandeduca=on.
The objec=ve of the prize is the apprecia=on, recogni=on of the best studies, scien=fic projects, applied
research,andinnova=veini=a=ves,whichwithintheHealthfieldhavemadesignificantimpactandlas=ng
influenceinadvancingprogresstoeconomicandsocialdevelopmentinAfrica.Theawardedprojectsshould
helpAfricanna=onstoovercomepoverty,hunger,lackofpotablewater,injus=ceortoimprovehealthcare,
literacy and the alloca=on of economic resources. The Prize should also highlight successes within the
followingsubjects:FoodSecurity,HealthandEduca=on.
Thesubjectforthe2016prizeisFoodSecurity:
Theprizeistobeawardedtoindividualsorins=tu=onswhothroughtheirresearchprojectsorini=a=ves
havemadesignificantadvancementwithinoneormoreofthefollowingareas:
- Developing new varie=es of seeds, crops or livestock which can improve the food security of the poor
popula=on in Africa by increasing the calorific and nutri=onal value of food produced and consumed
domes=cally.
- Improvingfarmers’accesstoagriculturalinputs,techniques,technologiesandmarketssoastoincrease
theavailabilityofstapleproductswhichformacorepartofthedietofthepoorestpeopleinAfrica.
- Improvingfarmers’resiliencetoclimatechangeandextremeweathercondi=ons.
Condi=onsandrequirements:
1. Thenominatedcandidates’researchworkorprojectsandini=a=vesmustbeinnova=veandmusthave
achievedhigh-impactinlinewithinterna=onalstandardsfortheprize.
2. The submiTed work must be of paramount importance in promo=ng significant economic, social,
humanresourcesandinfrastructuredevelopmentintheAfricancon=nentwithintheannouncedfieldof
theprize.
3. SubmiTed research work of a nominated candidate should be composed of studies and applied
research,publishedinreferredjournalsandrecognizedatagloballevelwithintheannouncedfield.The
researchoutcomeneedstohavebeenappliedaFerpublica=oninAfricancountrieswithinthepastten
years.Adequatesuppor=ngevidenceneedstobeprovided.
4. Nomina=ons are to be accepted from ins=tu=ons and scien=fic centers (universi=es, ins=tutes and
centersofscien=ficresearch)aswellasfromcompetentregionalorinterna=onalandUNorganiza=ons
and awards and former winners in the field of the prize or former evalua=on members. Nomina=ons
willonlybeacceptedthroughins=tu=onsorotherpossiblenominatorsmen=onedabove.
