Accros au succès
Trois ans après le succès de leur album ABIII et des tournées qui s'en
suivirent, les Américains d'Alter Bridge sont de retour, comme à leur
habitude, avec un nouveau disque qui risque fort bien de les placer sur la
première marche du podium des meilleurs groupes de hard rock de notre
ère. Le duo Mark Tremonti / Myles Kennedy a planché ces derniers mois sur
douze nouveaux titres qui, non contents de surfer sur la vague des trois
premiers opus, se sentent obliger d'agrémenter la musique du quatuor d'un
aspect totalement épique qui manquaient peut-être quelque peu jusque là.
En pleine promotion de cette nouvelle plaque, les deux compères ont
survolé l'Atlantique pour faire écouter Fortress aux médias, et en ont profiter
pour répondre aux questions des journalistes, qui étaient évidemment
nombreux à vouloir recueillir les impressions des auteurs de cette nouvelle
tuerie. C'est Myles Kennedy, le frontman charismatique, qui nous a parlé de
cette nouvelle création tant attendue par les fans.

S: Myles, vous terminez donc un cycle d'album pour en débuter un nouveau. Que retienstu de ces trois dernières années avec Alter Bridge ?
Myles Kennedy: Eh bien, ça a été très cool, tu vois, cet album ABIII, puis les tournées de
promotion, ensuite j'ai sauté dans ce projet avec Slash et les gars, pour finalement
commencer à composer avec Mark en janvier dernier pour ce nouveau disque. Ces trois
années ont été assez dingues !
S: Ce nouvel album s'intitule donc Fortress. Que peux-tu nous dire à propos de ce titre, et y
a-t-il un concept derrière cet album ?
Myles : Pour beaucoup de gens, le mot 'forteresse' signifie une structure qui est
pratiquement invincible, comme peuvent le sembler les gouvernements, les relations
personnelles ou le mariage par exemple, mais avec le temps, on comprend rapidement
que beaucoup de choses qui nous semblent indestructibles peuvent facilement
s'effondrer ! La chanson qui porte ce titre parle de cela, des institutions, des relations... du
fait que rien n'est éternel.
S: En tant que vrai fan de la première heure, j'ai déjà écouté ce nouvel album de
nombreuses fois, et je dois te dire que je ne m'attendais pas à quelque chose d'aussi bon !
Le terme que j'utilise personnellement pour décrire ce disque, c'est “Dark Epic” (sombre et
épique). Qu'en penses-tu ?
Myles : Oh merci beaucoup ! Je pense que c'est un choix judicieux, cet album est
vraiment sombre, et de nombreuses chansons ont ce côté épique, c'est vrai, nous ne nous
sommes pas enfermés dans cette formule qui voudrait qu'on fasse des chansons de trois
ou quatre minutes, et nous voulions que ça sonne énorme ! Nous pensions que nombre de
gens qui aiment Alter Bridge attendaient cela de notre part, que nous nous imposions un
vrai challenge, il y a donc beaucoup de dynamique et de couleurs différentes sur ce
nouvel album.
S: Selon toi, en quoi votre musique a-t-elle évolué entre ABIII et Fortress ? Qu'est-il arrivé
dans votre vie pour que ces morceaux soient aussi épiques et matures ?
Myles : Eh bien, je pense qu'ABIII était beaucoup plus autobiographique, les chansons
parlaient surtout de questions que je me posais personnellement, et tout cela passait dans
les textes. Mais pour Fortress, nous avons plutôt jeté un oeil au monde qui nous entoure. Je
pense que... l'évolution musicale et la maturité de cet album sont surtout le résultat du fait
que nous sommes constamment sur les routes, que nous tournons sans cesse et que nous
jouons tout le temps, nous sommes forcés d'évoluer !
S: Musicalement, as-tu été personnellement impliqué dans l'écriture des chansons, ou cet
album est-il à 100% une création de Mark Tremonti ? Parce que ce disque est plus metal
que les précédents, et je pense que l'album solo de Mark aurait très bien pu être une
bonne passerelle entre ABIII et Fortress.
Myles : En fait, nous avons travaillé sur ce nouvel album un peu comme nous l'avions fait
pour Blackbird, Mark et sommes en sommes les deux compositeurs, chacun de nous a
apporté beaucoup d'idées, c'est vraiment une collaboration. Je pense que c'est ce qui
rend ce groupe aussi unique, ce n'est pas une seule personne qui compose les albums. Je
crois que ça leur donne de la dynamique et ce large panel de couleurs, parce que tu as
deux compositeurs très différents qui bossent ensemble pour créer quelque chose

d'homogène.
S: Certains nouveaux morceaux sont vraiment plus heavy que ce que vous avez fait
précédemment, je pense notamment à “Bleed It Dry” ou “The Uninvited”. Quel rôle ces
chansons jouent-elles sur cet album, pourquoi en aviez-vous besoin dans cette tracklist ?
Myles : Je pense que c'est probablement parce que nos fans aiment vraiment cet aspect
du groupe ! Ca tombe sous le sens pour nous d'incorporer ce type de riffs très agressifs
dans notre musique, tout en garder ce côté mélodique à l'esprit. C'est finalement ça Alter
Bridge : les riffs heavy et le chant hyper mélodique ! Et ces deux morceaux en sont des
exemples frappants.

S: Au niveau vocal, ton chant est beaucoup plus varié sur ce nouvel album, tu utilises
même des voix très hautes, un peu comme tu le faisais au sein de The Mayfield Four,
notamment sur des titres comme “Lover” ou encore “Calm The Fire”. Comment expliquestu que ton champs vocal soit si large cette fois-ci ?
Myles : C'est vraiment cool que tu aies entendu dans ma voix cette touche que j'avais
dans The Mayfield Four, parce que c'était un des projects dont je suis le plus fier ! Je suis
vraiment content d'entendre cela ! En fait, il m'a simplement semblé que ça convenait
parfaitement à ces chansons-là, tu vois, quand j'écoute ce que nous composons,
j'entends instantanément ce que j'aurai besoin de faire avec ma voix, ça vient
naturellement.
S: J'ai discuté milles fois avec Mark à propos de la chanson “Blackbird” et il m'a toujours
dit que vous ne pourriez jamais écrire un autre morceau aussi parfait que celui-là. Ne
penses-tu pas que vous y êtes finalement arrivé avec un titre comme “Fortress” ?
Personnellement, il me semble presqu'aussi épique !
Myles : Merci ! Nous étions vraiment contents de la façon dont ce morceau s'est mis en
place, avec les arrangements et le côté épique, justement. “Blackbird” est certainement
la chanson dont nous sommes les plus fiers, mais oui il y a certains morceau sur ce nouvel
album dont nous sommes vraiment fiers également, dont nous aimons particulièrement le
résultat. Et maintenant, c'est vraiment cool d'entendre que tu aimes ce titre, ça me donne
l'espoir que les gens pourraient l'apprécier, j'aime ça.
S: Vous avez bossé une nouvelle fois avec Michael 'Elvis' Baskette pour la production de
ce nouvel opus, et il semble que son talent évolue en même temps que votre musique !
Que penses-tu qu'il ait apporté à Alter Bridge cette fois-ci ?
Myles : Ouais Elvie est incroyablement talentueux ! Tu sais, beaucoup de producteurs te
feront venir dans leur studio sans essayer de tirer le meilleur de toi-même et de tes
chansons, mais Elvis nous a poussés à essayer des choses et à ne pas avoir peur de tenter

d'autres arrangements etc... et je suis très content de cela, car je pense qu'il est une des
raisons pour lesquelles cet album sonne aussi bien. C'était aussi la première fois qu'il mixait
un album d'Alter Bridge, et au final on a ce son énorme, il est vraiment génial, il peut tout
faire.
S: Quel est ton morceau favori sur cet album ? Et pour quelles raisons ?
Myles : C'est une bonne question. Je suis personnellement très fier de “Cry of Achilles”,
j'aime aussi beaucoup “Calm The Fire” et l'intro que nous avons composé pour ce
morceau, mais non... je pense vraiment que celui dont je suis le plus fier, c'est “Cry of
Achilles” !
S: Toutefois, même si je pense profondément que Fortress est un album qui tue, j'ai
quelque chose de négatif à te dire à son propos :-) La pochette de ce disque n'est pas
vraiment réussie, selon moi, comparée à ce que vous aviez proposé auparavant, et j'ai
entendu beaucoup de gens dire la même chose. Qu'en penses-tu ?
Myles : Tu sais quoi, j'ai aussi entendu ça quelques fois ! Je pense que nous avons essayé
de donner à cet album une image qui soit différente de ce à quoi tout le monde
s'attendait, car beaucoup de gens auraient pensé à un château par exemple, quelque
chose de fort et solide, de plus évident, mais nous avons décidé de partir dans une
direction totalement différente. Certains l'aiment vraiment, d'autres pas du tout, mais c'est
comme pour toute forme d'art, chaque peut se forger sa propre opinion... Mais je serai
surtout reconnaissant si les gens apprécient la musique, je préfèrerais ça plutôt qu'on me
dise “Oh j'adore la pochette, mais la musique est à chier !” tu vois (rires) !
S: A l'automne prochain, vous serez de retour chez nous en Belgique, et il semble que ce
soit une place où vous n'oubliez jamais de revenir lorsque vous tournez en Europe. Avezvous une connexion particulière avec vos fans ici en Belgique, ou en Europe en général ?
Myles : Oui, complètement ! Il y a dix ans, lorsque nous sommes venus en Europe pour la
première fois, nous nous sommes réellement sentis adoptés par le public de cette partie
du monde plus que partout ailleurs donc... il y a clairement un lien spécial entre nous ! Et
nous continueras de revenir tant qu'il y aura des gens pour venir à nos concerts.
S: Pour cette nouvelle tournée, vous serez accompagnés par les talentueux Halestorm.
Que penses-tu de ce groupe, et particulièrement de la voix de Lzzy Hale, puisque tu
chantes également ?
Myles : Je pense personnellement que Lzzy Hale est une la meilleure voix de hard rock que
j'ai entendue depuis longtemps ! Et si tu poses la question à n'importe quel chanteur, il te
répondra la même chose, elle et ses gars ont vraiment beaucoup de talent, et je suis très
heureux que nous les emmenions avec nous sur la route, je pense que ce sera vraiment un
très bon show pour les fans. Je recommande chaudement aux gens qui viendront voir
Alter Bridge d'arriver plus tôt pour assister à cela, car ils sont vraiment bons sur scène, et ce
sera une super soirée de rock'n'roll !

S: Je pense que vous devriez penser à faire un duo avec Lzzy pour votre prochain album,
ce serait extraordinaire !
Myles : En fait, j'y ai déjà souvent pensé, ouais Alter Bridge devrait faire ça dans le futur !
S: Tout le monde sait que tu es maintenant impliqué dans le dernier projet solo de Slash
depuis quelques années maintenant, voici donc la question qui tue : penses-tu qu'un jour
tu pourrais quitter Alter Bridge au profit d'un autre project comme celui que tu mènes aux
côtés de Slash ?
Myles : Eh bien, je ne pense pas, non... Je crois que nous avons mis tellement d'énergie
dans la création d'Alter Bridge tel qu'il est aujourd'hui que nous ne pourrions jamais faire
ça, et nos fans sont tellement fidèles, ils veulent clairement que nous restions ensemble. Je
pense que pour moi c'est juste une question d'équilibre, et j'adore travailler avec ma
musique, j'espère simplement pouvoir continuer à évoluer aussi longtemps que ce sera
possible !
S: Eh bien merci beaucoup pour cette nouvelle belle interview, Myles ! C'est toujours un
plaisir de discuter avec toi et de recueillir tes mots sur nos pages. As-tu un dernier mot
pour vos fans et nos lecteurs ici en Belgique et partout ailleurs ?
Myles : Oui, nous sommes tous très excités à l'idée de revenir chez vous, vous avez toujours
été là pour nous, et nous ne l'oublierons jamais ! Nous continuerons à revenir, car nous
aimons vous entendre chanter nos chansons avec nous. A dans quelques mois !

Addicted to success
Three years after their successful album ABIII and the several tours that
came after it, the American guys of Alter Bridge are back, as they're used
to, with a new disc that is certaintly going to put them on the first step of the
podium of the most talented hard rock bands of this era. The duo Mark
Tremonti / Myles Kennedy worked this last months on twelve new songs that
are riding the wave of the first three records, but also brightening up the
music of the quartet with a totally epic aspect that was maybe a little bit
missing until then. For the promotion of this new disc, the two friends flew
over the Atlantic Ocean to let the medias listen to Fortress, and also
answered to the questions of the journalists who were obviously very
numerous wanting to get the impressions of the authors of this new killer
creation. That's Myles Kennedy, the charismatic frontman, who talked to us
about this new long-awaited album.

S: So Myles, you're know ending an album cycle and starting a new one. What do you get
from these last three years with Alter Bridge?
Myles Kennedy: Well, its been pretty cool you know, all about the ABIII record, and touring
for it, then I jumped in the project with Slash and the guys, and then we started to write
with Mark for the next record back in the January. These last three years have been pretty
crazy!
S: This new album coming out is called Fortress. What can you tell us about this title, and is
there a concept between the whole disc?
Myles : For a lot of people, the word 'Fortress' means a structure that is invincible, and
there's a lot of things like government, relationships, marriages, but when the time goes on,
you learn that a lot of things that you think are indestructible will eventually crumble! So
this song talks about that, about the institutions, the relationships... about the fact that
nothing of that will last forever.
S: As a real die-hard fan, I've already listened to this new record several times, and I have
to tell you that I was not expecting something this good! The term I personaly use to
describe this album is “Dark Epic”. What do you think about that?
Myles : Oh thank you very much! I think it's actually a good term, it's clearly all dark, and a
lot of songs sound epic, we didn't stick to a three of four minutes formula, and we wanted
it to be epic! We though that a lot of people who love Alter Bridge were expected that, I
mean us taking some musical challenges, so there's a lot of dynamics and colors on this
new record.
S: According to you, in what way did your music evolve between ABIII and Fortress? What
happened in your life for these songs to be so epic and full of maturity?
Myles : Well I think that ABIII was a lot more autobiographical, there were things going on
about questions I had, and that was working through the lyrics. But with Fortress, it's more
looking to the world around us. But I think... about despise the musical grow and the
maturity of the record, I think that might just come from how much we are constantly on
the road, touring and playing music, and being forced to evolve!
S: Musically, have you personaly been evolved in the writing of the songs, or is it a 100%
Mark Tremonti thing? 'cause this new record is more metal than the previous ones, and it
seems that Mark's solo album could have been a good gateway between ABIII and
Fortress.
Myles : In fact, for this new record we worked a little bit like we did for Blackbird, Mark and
I are both the writers, each of us brang a lot of ideas, it's very much of a collaboration. I
think it's what makes this band so unique, that it's not just one person putting together an
entire record. I think it kinda gives the dynamic and this type of wide array of colors,
'cause you have two guys who are very different kinds of writers coming together and
creating something.
S: There are some tracks that are really heavier than everything you did before, songs like
“Bleed It Dry” or “The Uninvited”. What role do these songs play on this album, why did you
need them to be part of this tracklist?

Myles : I think it's probably because we know that are fans really love that side of the
band! So it just makes sense for us to incorporate some very aggressive riffs to our music,
but of course to continue to keep melody in mind as well, that's the thing Alter Bridge is
about, the heavy riffs with the very melodic vocals! And these two songs are two shiny
examples of that.

S: Vocally, your singing is much more varied on this new record, as you even use highpitched vocals like you used to in The Mayfield Four, on songs like “Lover” or “Calm The
Fire”. How did you explain that your voice range is so wide this time?
Myles : That's pretty cool that you hear in some of my vocals the touch that I had in the
Mayfield Four era, 'cause it's been one of my favorite project I've been involved in! I'm
really glad to hear that! In fact, it felt that it just fits the songs, you know, when I listen to
what we write, I instantly hear what I will need to do with my voice, it comes naturally.
S: I've talked a thousand times with Mark about the song “Blackbird” and he always told
me that you guys could never write song like that again, as it's so perfect. Don't you think
you succeeded this time with a song like “Fortress”? 'cause to me it sounds almost as epic!
Myles : Thank you! We were really happy with the way it turned out, with the arrangements
and the epic side of it. “Blackbird” is probably the song that we are all the most proud of,
but yeah there are some songs on this new record that we are proud of as well, and that
we were pleasantly surprised with the outcome. And now it's very great to hear from you
that you love that song, 'cause it gives me hope that people could enjoy it, I appreciate
that.
S: You've worked once again with Michael 'Elvis' Baskette for the production of this new
album, and it seems that his talent evolves at the same time as your music does! What do
you think he brang to Alter Bridge this time?
Myles : Yeah Elvis is unbelievably talented! You know, a lot of producers will make you
come to their studio without trying to take the best of you and your songs, but Elvis pushed
us to try things and not to be afraid to take chances with the arrangements, and I'm really
happy with that, 'cause I think he's one of the reasons that the record turned out the way
it did. And that was also the first time he mixed an Alter Bridge record, and finally it has this
huge sound, he's just amazing, he can do everything.
S: What's your personal favorite song on this new album, and for what reasons?
Myles : Well it's a good question. I'm personaly very proud of “Cry of Achilles”, I really like
“Calm The Fire” and the intro we've put to that song, but no... I really think the one I'm the
most proud of is “Cry of Achilles”!

S: Nevertheless, even if I think that Fortress is a killer album, I have something bad to tell
you about it :-) The cover artwork is not really a success compared to what you used to
have for the previous albums, and I've heard a lot of people telling that. What do you think
about that?
Myles : You know what, I've heard that a few times as well! I think we tried to give it an
image that was quiet different than what you'd think it would be, 'cause a lot of people
would of thought it will be a castle, or something that strong, something obvious, but we
decided to take it to a completely different direction. Some people really like it, and some
others don't, but I think it's like any art form, every people have their own opinion... But I will
be grateful if people like the music, I'd prefer that instead of people telling me “Oh I really
like the artwork, but the record sucks!” you know (laughs)!
S: In the Fall, you will be back again in our country of Belgium, and it seems that this is a
place you never forget to come to when you're on tour in Europe. Do you have a special
link with your fans here in Belgium, or in Europe in general?
Myles : Yeah definitely! I mean, ten years ago when we came in Europe for the first time,
we really felt embraced in this part of the world more than anywhere else so... there's
definitely a special connection! And we will continue to come back over and over, as
long as there are people coming to our shows.
S: For this new tour here, you'll be supported by the talented Halestorm. What do you think
about this band, and about the Lzzy Hale's voice in particular, as you're a singer too?
Myles : I personaly think that Lzzy Hale is one of the best hard rock vocalist that I've heard
in a long time! You could ask any singer the same question and he will agree, she and the
guys are very talented, and I'm really happy that we are taking them out on the road, I
think it's gonna be a great show for the fans. For the people who will come to see Alter
Bridge, I highly recommend them to come early to make sure they witness that, 'cause
they're really great performers, and it's gonna be a really great night of rock'n'roll!

S: I personaly think you should think about making a duet with Lzzy for your next record,
that would be awesome!
Myles : Oh actually, i've already thought about that, yeah Alter Bridge would have to do
that in the future!
S: Everyone's knows that you're personaly involved with Slash for a few years now, so
here's the hard question: do you think that one day you could leave Alter Bridge for the
benefit of an other project like the one you drive with Slash?

Myles : Well, I don't think so... I think that there's been so much energy put in that project to
create what Alter Bridge is today that we could never do that, and the fans are so loyal,
they all want us all to stay together. I think for me it's just a matter of trying to balance, and
you know that I love to work with my music, so hopefully I can just continue to evolve as
long as it's personaly possible!
S: Well thanks a lot for this new cool interview, Myles! It's always a pleasure to talk with you
and get your words on our pages. Do you have a last word for your fans and our readers
here in Belgium and everywhere else?
Myles : Yeah we are really excited to get back there, people have always been there for
us, and we'll never forget that! So we'll continue to come back, 'cause we love to hear
