Introduction
C'est avec une fierté bien légitime que nous vous présentons le premier annuaire de Lions du
Québec, District- "A-8".
Nous remercions tous les secrétaires de clubs qui nous ont accordé, dans ce domaine comme
partout ailleurs/ leur bienveillante collaboration. Nous remercions également tous ceux qui, de
près ou de loin, ont rendu ce projet réalisable.

Nous sommes loin de penser que ce premier annuaire soit parfait. Bien au contraire, nous
sommes portes à croire qu'il s'est glisse des irrégularités et des erreurs involontaires et nous
demandons à I'avance à tous les intéressés, de nous accorder leur indulgence.
Nous croyons que cette première expérience démontrera 1'utilité que peut procurer aux Lions du
Québec un tel annuaire et que sa publication se continuera d'années en années en y apportant de
nouvelles idées et les changements qui s'imposeront.
Si les Lions du Québec se servent de cet annuaire toutes les fois qu'ils sont en quête d'un nouveau
produit ou d'un meilleur service et s'ils savent accorder la préférence à leurs confrères Lions; s'ils
réfèrent à I'annuaire lors des visites entre clubs afin de rafraîchir leur mémoire sur les noms des
confrères qu'ils visiteront, nous aurons la consolation de constater que nous aurons atteint le but
que nous avions visé.
Nous serons heureux de connaître 1'utilité que vous ferez de cet annuaire et nous recevrons
également avec plaisir toutes suggestions que vous voudrez bien nous transmettre, afin de le
rendre plus utile et plus efficace.
Introduction
It is with pardonable pride that we present to you the first Lions Directory of District
"A-8", Province of Quebec.
We sincerely thank the Club Secretaries/ who, as usual, have given us their generous
collaboration. We also thank all those who have, in any way, shape or form, made this project
possible.
We are fully aware that this first Directory is far from being perfect. On the contrary, we believe
that errors and omissions have slipped in, involuntarily, and we therefore count on your generous
indulgence.
It is expected, however, that this venture will demonstrate the usefulness of a District Lions
Directory and that its publication will be repeated every year, bringing in new ideas and making
the necessary changes and corrections which will occur from time to time.
If Lions of District "A-8" use this Directory every time they are looking for a new product or a
better service, and if they give preference to their brother Lions; also, if they refer to the
Directory every time they visit another club in order to refresh their memory of names and
professions — we will have great satisfaction in knowing that we have attained our goal
Do not hesitate to tell us what use you will make of your Directory and, at the same time let us
know of any suggestions you may have to offer in order to make it more useful and efficient.
LE DISTRICT "A-8" ET SON HISTOIRE F. W. Shields, Gouverneur
Le District "A-8" étant jeune, son histoire est plutôt courte. Il débuta en juillet 1953, ayant
comme premier Gouverneur, le Conseiller International Paul Chaput. Auparavant nous faisions
partie du District "A-4" lequel comprenait plus de 45 clubs répartis dans les provinces de Québec
et d'Ontario.

Deux causes principales ont motivé la formation du District "A-8" à même le District "A-4". La
première, à cause du fait que plus de 45 clubs se trouvaient répandus sur un trop vaste territoire
avec une augmentation constante de clubs et de membres, ce qui rendait la tâche du Gouverneur
extrêmement compliquée. La seconde, parce que le District "A-4" étant formé d'une forte
majorité de clubs de l'Ontario, l'élection d'un Gouverneur du Québec n'était pas très fréquente.
Il fut alors fortement recommandé par les officiers en fonction, de former un nouveau District
dans le Québec. Les gouverneurs élus par la suite étant de notre province, connaîtraient mieux
nos problèmes et pourraient ainsi plus adéquatement administrer le district et promouvoir
l'expansion du Lionisme par la formation de nouveaux clubs.
Cette question fut portée à l'attention du Bureau des Gouverneurs pour le District "A". Après
mûres réflexions, il fut décidé de former le District "A-8", mais à cause de la situation
géographique de certains clubs de notre province, il fut conclu que quelques-uns de ceux-ci
devraient quand même continuer de faire partie du District "A-4".
Lors de son détachement du District "A-4", le District "A-8" comprenait les Régions No 12 et 19
avec 19 clubs au total. Depuis sa fondation toutefois, trois nouveaux clubs sont venus s'ajouter à
ce nombre, soit: Lac Mégantic/ Notre-Dame de Grâce et Asbestos
Nous fondons de nobles espérances sur l’expansion du lionisme dans notre province et nous
comptons sur la bienveillante collaboration de tous nos membres pour voir jaillir de nouveaux
clubs dans un avenir rapproché.
HISTORY OF DISTRICT "A-8" Governor F. W. Shields
The history of District "A-8" is a rather short one, because it came into existence in July 1953
with International Counselor Paul Chaput as its first District Governor. Prior to that time we were
part of District "A-4", which comprised more than 45 clubs in the provinces of Ontario and
Quebec.
There were two main reasons for splitting District "A-4". First—There were more than 45 clubs
spread over a large area and with the number of members and clubs increasing rapidly, it became
rather difficult for the District Governor to administer his district adequately. Second—Since
District "A-4" included most of the Province of Quebec and part of the Province of Ontario with
most of the members and clubs in the Province of Ontario, the election of a District Governor
from the Province of Quebec was not too frequent. It was the feeling of many of the older and
experienced Lions in these regions that it was very desirable always to have a District Governor
from our Province, because he would be more familiar with our conditions and therefore be in a
position to do a better job of administration.
For these reasons the matter was brought before the Board of Governors of District "A" with a
request that all clubs in the Province of Quebec be formed into a separate district. After due
consideration it was decided to split District "A-4", but because of the geography of the Province
of Quebec and the location of certain clubs in our Province, it was felt that certain Quebec Clubs
should still remain in District "A-4". As a result of this decision our new District "A-8" was
formed and comprised regions 12 and "19 with a total of 19 clubs. Since that time three clubs
have been added, i.e., Lake Megantic/ Notre Dame de Grace and Asbestos.

We are looking forward to a more rapid development of Lionism in our Province, and we are
confident that with the whole-hearted co-operation of all our fine Lions, more new clubs will be
founded in the near future.
