By 1912, the archetype of the rider-amazon had already largely invested the social imaginary of the woman in the person of Natalie Clifford Barney, author of « Pensées d’une amazone » and host of a famous avant-garde Parisian salon. Chana Orloff incarnated her iconoclast and rebellious nature, her ideas on a new female model, in a debut sculpture designed in 1915 and named « Amazone à Cheval ». In 1955, « L’Ecuyère »- even if it is not an official portraiture of Clifford-Barney- resumes the same topos invested half a century earlier. A detailed and sincerely brilliant essay written by Willi Naomi Mendelssohn sheds an insightful light on feminist and egalitarian outlooks one can decipher through an interpretation of Orloff’s work.
