Jules Delhaize, besloot om
een efficiëntere voedingsdistributieketen in België te
ontwikkelen. Diezelfde motivatie bracht het bedrijf ertoe
in 1957 de eerste supermarkt
op het Europese continent
te openen. Delhaize Groep
heeft nu vestigingen in de
Verenigde Staten, in verschillende Europese landen
(België, het Groothertogdom Luxemburg, Duitsland,
Griekenland, de Tsjechische
Republiek, Roemenië) en in
Zuidoost-Azië (Indonesië).
In de Verenigde Staten is
Delhaize Groep een van de
belangrijkste
supermarktketens, met meer dan 1.500
winkels, vooral in het oosten
van het land. Eind 2004 telde
Delhaize 2.565 eigen, aangesloten of gefranchiseerde
verkooppunten,
