CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
This course includes beginner's pronunciation, oral practice and dictation, conversation,
use of recordings for ear training, basic principles of grammar, simple exercises in
composition, easy reading which includes cultural material.
This is a college transferable course
CREDIT
Four (4) hours
Prerequisites
None (Students with 2 or more years of high school French within the last 3 years must
take a placement exam. )
PURPOSE
This course is designed to enable students to understand, converse, read, and write, basic
French and to apply the skills in everyday usage
COURSE OUTCOMES:
•
Recognize the letters of the alphabet and produce the sounds associated with
the letters.
•
Comprehend elementary French phrases in context and respond accordingly
•
Show the application of subject pronouns in a sentence.
•
Know how to pronounce numbers from one to millions in French.
•
Demonstrate the agreement of gender and number among articles, nouns,
and adjectives
•
Use idiomatic expressions
•
Formulate questions and answers in situational dialogues on given topics.
•
Apply basic French grammar rules in writing simple paragraphs on a given
topic and other exercises.
•
Read and respond to simple passages of cultural material.

Complete both oral and written tests on grammatical structures and
vocabulary throughout the semester.
•
Demonstrate everyday French speaking ability as it applies to different reallife scenarios.
•
Use formal and familiar commands.

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
1. The student is expected to be in class every class period.
2. Three absences are considered excessive and you may be dropped from the course.
Three tardies will be considered an absence.
3. If a student misses an hour exam he or she must notify the instructor as to the reason,
make arrangements to take it before the instructor returns the exam to the class. Each
student is only allowed one make-up exam, student must show official written
evidence for missing exam. The student will not receive a make up on the oral portion
of the exam.
4. Because this is a communicative course, students are required to participate in all
oral, pair or group activities.
5. Cell phones and all electronic devices are not permitted. These must be put away in
the backpack in a silent mode at the beginning of class.
6. Civility is an important aspect of interaction in the classroom. Civility includes cooperation,
respect, courtesy to your classmates, teachers, listening to others.

SIX COURSE LIMIT RULE
Students who enrolled in Texas public institutions of higher education as first-time college students during
the Fall 2007 term or later are subject to section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, which states that an
institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop (withdraw with a grade of “W”) from
more than six courses. This six-course limit includes courses that a transfer student has previously
dropped at other Texas public institutions of higher education if they fall under the law.
