You have read a letter concerning your public presentation made last term in the International Relations
class which was sent to the Debate Column of the Students University newspaper by a student attending
the class. Other readers were invited to give their views in response. You decide to write to the editor
giving your opinion about the points made. Write your letter for the newspaper editor. (around 300 - 350

You have recently read an article from the ITI-RI magazine on the problem of physical inactivity in
students. The magazine has invited its readers to respond to the topic by writing a short article of their
own, which answers the following question:
Why are students becoming ‘computer addicts’ and what can we do to solve the problem?

WRITE AN ESSAY FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS
First write an article to a student’s magazine (around 300-350 words):
How taking a gap year can enhance your career prospects?
(A gap year is a break usually taken between leaving university and starting work, and is seen as a
valuable way to gain work experience and life skills).
Then, write a proposal to members of a student’s film society interested in films with an IR theme
(around 300-350 words):
You are a member of a University IR film society and have received the following message: “We’ve got a
new group of students interested in joining the IR film society this year. I was hoping some of our older
members would be prepared to give a short presentation on one of their favourite films. You could
include a short summary of the plot and the theme and then why you particularly like it.” Write the
proposal for the society.

announcement:

poor. The private company that you booked with has offered you some vouchers as compensation, but
you have decided you would prefer a cash refund instead. Write a letter to the company outlining the
problems you experienced with the accommodation and the action you want them to take. (300 –

I have just returned from a study placement to a destination that would once have been described as
‘exotic’. Imagine my dismay at being confronted with the kinds of shopping centres and fast-food outlets
that I can find on my own doorstep back home! Is it inevitable that different cultures merge into one or
can we do more to ensure that local traditions are kept?

You are a strong supporter of decentralization and local democracy processes in developing countries, in
order to strengthen local development and good governance. More specifically, you would like to
strengthen local governments and their representative organisations.
In your own words, analyze what local governments’ needs are, define their priority agendas and say
what you would do in order to start a dialogue with States and regional institutions in support of
decentralization and the role of local governments.

present, how this has changed from the past, and changes that you think may happen in the future. You
may discuss the topic with respect to some or all of the following points: the workplace, family structures,
education, and the portrayal of minorities in the media.
