2010, Linen and Hemp’s year
Lin et chanvre au cœur de 2010, année internationale de la Biodiversité
Linen and Hemp at the heart of 2010, international year of Biodiversity
Proclamée par l’Organisation des Nations unies, 2010 est placée sous le signe de la
biodiversité. Le but est d’alerter l’opinion publique sur l’état et les conséquences du
déclin de la biodiversité dans le monde.
Mais qu’entend-on par biodiversité ? La biodiversité, telle que définie lors du Sommet de
la Terre de Rio en 1992, est une notion qui recouvre l’ensemble des formes de vie sur Terre
(faune, flore, milieux naturels, espèces humaines) ainsi que les relations établies entre
elles. Lors du Sommet de Rio, une convention mondiale sur la biodiversité a été signée par
l’ensemble des pays afin de rendre prioritaire la protection et la restauration de la diversité
du vivant, considérée comme une des ressources vitales du développement durable. Et
en matière de développement durable, nos fibres lin et chanvre ont de la ressource ! Leur
culture ne nécessite aucune irrigation et ne rejette aucun défoliant, le processus de transformation du lin dépend uniquement de la nature, son écoprofil est irréprochable, et tous ses
co-produits sont utilisés. Le lin et le chanvre, des acteurs essentiels de cette année 2010 !

Proclamed at the United Nations, 2010 is the Year of International Biodiversity.
The aim is to inform the public of the current state and consequences of biodiversity’s
decline in the world.
But what do we mean by biodiversity ? As defined by the United Nations in the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, biodiversity is an idea which includes all forms of life on Earth (flora, fauna,
natural environments, human beings …) and the systems established between them. During
the Earth Summit, a Convention on Biological Diversity was signed by all countries to prioritize protecting and restoring the diversity of living organisms, considered one of the most
important resources for sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, our
linen and hemp fibers have resources ! Their cultivation doesn’t require irrigation and doesn’t
release defoliants, their transformation depends only on nature, their ecoprofil is irreproachable and all their bi-products are usable. Linen and hemp, essential players for 2010 !

Le lin au cœur des tendances 2010
Linen at the heart of 2010 trends
Le lin est tout naturellement au cœur des tendances 2010. Fibre naturelle par excellence,
il répond aux attentes des consommateurs soucieux de la qualité, de la provenance et du
profil écologique de ses achats.
Ainsi, pour Vincent Grégoire, tendanceur pour le bureau Nelly Rodi, « la tendance aux
matières douces, moelleuses, déjà perceptible en 2009, devrait aussi se confirmer, comme
le succès des belles fibres naturelles, tel le lin, préféré au coton, car moins gourmand en
eau et meilleur pour la préservation de la planète ». (Journal du Textile – 09/12/2009).
L’univers de l’Art de Vivre n’est pas en reste et met lui aussi à l’honneur le lin le célébrant
comme le « grand triomphateur de la saison, métamorphosé par de nouveaux aspects, en
décoration comme en linge de maison » (dossier « spécial maison » - Journal du Textile,
6/01/2010)

Linen is naturally at the heart of 2010 trends. A natural fiber by excellence, it responds to
the expectations of consumers who care about the quality, origin and ecological profile of
what they purchase.
For Vincent Grégoire, a trend spotter at the Nelly Rodi style office, « the trend for soft, mellow textiles, already seen in 2009, will be confirmed as will beautiful natural fibers like linen,
preferable to coton, since the fibers use less water and are better for preserving the planet
» (Journal du Textile – December 9, 2009). The Art of Living universe is not left out and
also focuses on linen, celebrating it as the « big winner of the season, transformed by new
aspects for both interior design and household linens. » (« Special Home » report – Journal
du Textile, January 6, 2010)
