Part 1: Mount the Controller on a Desk You can mount WLC100 controllers on a desk or other level surfaces by using the four rubber feet that are attached to the controller chassis. NOTE: We recommend that you mount the controller in the horizontal position. To mount the controller in the horizontal position on a desk: 1. Move the shipping carton to an area close to the mounting location where you have enough room to remove the controller from the carton. Position the carton so that the arrows are pointing up. 2. Remove the power adapter and the RJ-45 to DB-9 female adapter from the carton. 3. Remove the packing material from the carton and lift the controller out. 4. Place the chassis on the desk with the Juniper Networks logo embossed on the top cover facing up. 5. (Optional) Secure the optional standard cable to a desk or a rack and set the lock to the unlock position. Insert the lock into the slot for the security cable latch on the rear panel of the controller and set the lock to the locked position. 6. Save the shipping carton and packing materials. Part 2: Connect Power to the Controller To connect power to the controller: 1. Insert the jack of the power adapter into the power supply inlet on the rear panel. 2. If the power source outlet has a power switch, set it to the OFF (O) position. 3. Insert the power cord plug into the power source outlet. 4. If the power source outlet has a power switch, set it to the ON (|) position. 5. Verify that the LEDs labeled STATUS and POWER on the far right side of the front panel of the controller are lit and are on steadily. NOTE: When the controller is powered on for the first time, it boots using the factory default settings. Part 3: Connect the Controller to a Management Device The WLC100 has two console ports on the front panel: an RJ-45 port and a Mini-USB Type-B port. You can connect the controller to a management device by using one of the following methods: z Connect the console port on the front panel of the controller to a laptop or PC by using an RJ-45 cable and the RJ-45 to DB-9 serial port adapter. NOTE: If your laptop or PC does not have a DB-9 male connector pin and you want to connect your laptop or PC directly to the controller, use a combination of the RJ-45 to DB-9 female adapter and a USB to DB-9 male adapter. z Connect the Mini-USB console port to a USB port on the management device by using a mini-USB to PC-USB cable. NOTE: We recommend that you connect the controller to a management device by using the RJ-45 port because console messages are not displayed if you connect the controller to a management device using the mini-USB port. Part 4: Perform Initial Configuration There are two ways to configure WLC100 controllers—through the console by using the command-line interface (CLI) and by using the WebView interface. This guide describes the CLI procedure. Before you begin configuring the controller through the console using the CLI, set the following parameter values in the console server or PC: − Port—COM1 − Baud Rate—9600 − Flow Control: None − Data bits—8 − Parity—None − Stop bits—1 To configure the controller through the console by using the CLI: 1. Connect the RJ-45 console port on the controller to a laptop or PC by using an RJ-45 cable. If your laptop or PC does not have a DB-9 male connector pin and you want to connect your laptop or PC directly to the controller, use a combination of the RJ-45 to DB-9 female adapter and a USB to DB-9 male adapter. 2. At the Username prompt, press Enter. 3. At the Password prompt, press Enter. 4. At the command prompt, type enable and press Enter. The configuration mode is enabled and the command prompt changes from > to #. 5. At the command prompt, type quickstart and press Enter. 6. Type y (for yes) and press Enter to start the initial configuration of the controller. 7. (Optional) Enter a system name and press Enter or press Enter to retain the default name (that is, WLC100). 8. (Optional) Set the country code and press Enter or press Enter to retain the default country code (that is, US). 9. Set the system IP address and netmask, and press Enter. 10. (Optional) Set the default route and press Enter. 11. (Optional) Type y (for yes) to use 802.1Q-tagged ports on the default VLAN or type n (for no) if you do not want to use 802.1Q-tagged ports on the default VLAN. 12. Press Enter. 13. (Optional) Type y (for yes) to enable WebView interface or type n (for no) if you do not want to enable WebView interface and press Enter. If you enabled the WebView interface on the controller and want to use the WebView interface on the controller, type y (for yes) and press Enter. 14. (Optional) Set a username for the administrator. 15. Set a password for the administrator. 16. (Optional) Set a password for the Enable mode. We recommend that you set a password for the Enable mode to prevent unauthorized users from changing the configuration. 17. (Optional) Set the system time. You can also set the offset time for UTC (GMT). 18. (Optional) Type y (for yes) to configure wireless or type n (for no) if you do not want to configure wireless. 19. Press Enter. 20. Type y (for yes) and press Enter to begin the initial wireless setup. 21. After you have configured the wireless parameters, type save config and press Enter to save the configuration. The configuration is saved as the active controller configuration. You can now log in by using the CLI or the WebView interface to continue configuring the controller. Safety Warnings Summary This is a summary of safety warnings. For the complete list of warnings, see the Regulatory Guide for Wireless Products in the WLS documentation at http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/release-independent/wireless/information-produ cts/topic-collections/wireless-lan/hardware/regulatory-info.pdf . WARNING: Failure to observe these safety warnings can result in personal injury or death. z Permit only trained and qualified personnel to install and operate the controller. z Before installing the controller, read the planning instructions in the Wireless LAN Services (WLS) documentation at http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/release-independent/wireless/information-prod ucts/pathway-pages/wireless-lan/index.html to ensure that the site meets power, environmental, and clearance requirements for the controller. z System administrators and equipment installers of the WLAN system are responsible for the system’s proper setup and operation in accordance with all rules and regulations of the country in which the equipment operates. z Perform only the procedures described in this quick start and the Wireless LAN Services (WLS) documentation. z Do not work on the controller or connect or disconnect cables during electrical storms. z Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry, including rings, necklaces, and watches. Metal objects heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or become welded to the terminals.
