Giverny, indulge in art and nature
Giverny, indulge
in art and nature
Giverny is famous worldwide thanks
to Claude Monet and the waterlilies
he painted.
Hosted in a building harmoniously
integrated to the landscape and
surrounded by colorful gardens,
the musée des impressionnismes
Giverny presents each year temporary
exhibitions. Primarily dedicated to
Impressionism, its purpose is to focus
on the international dimension of the
Impressionist movement.
In addition, the museum presents
a comprehensive display of works
gathered around the figure of Claude
Monet.
Ideally situated between Paris and
Rouen, next door to Monet’s gardens,
the museum’s location makes it an ideal
and important stop for an Impressionist
tour.
Provide your groups with a unique
opportunity to admire impressionist
works of art in THE very village of
Impressionism!

Degas, an Impressionist Painter?
Edgar Degas was one of the leading figures of the Impressionist
movement, and yet his relations with other members of the
group were complex and he rarely practiced plein-air painting, a
characteristic of impressionism. Instead he preferred more personal
subjects, such as dancers’ bodies in movement, and he paid close
attention to artificial lighting.

This exhibition is organized in collaboration
with the Musée d’Orsay
July 31 – November 1, 2015
The exhibition brings together 70 works (paintings, pastels,
drawings and sculptures) and focuses on four broad themes: his
traditional artistic training, the Impressionist exhibitions, the
question of landscape, and his relationships with the impressionists
after 1890. Degas as an impressionist, certainly, but above all as an
avant-garde artist.
Photographing Claude Monet’s Gardens: Five Contemporary Views
Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny is probably one of the most
photographed subjects in the world. This exhibition offers an
unprecedented look at this mythic place through the works of five
internationally renowned contemporary photographers.

March 27 – November 1, 2015
The works of Stephen Shore record the restoration of Monet’s
garden between 1977 and 1982. More recently, artists Darren
Almond, Elger Esser, Henri Foucault and Bernard Plossu each
appropriated the garden, contemplating the magic of the place,
with its ephemeral and ever-changing beauties. A source of
inspiration, the garden became a space of experimentation for these
artists. The exhibition brings together approximately one hundred
photographs of small, medium, and large format.
Autour de Claude Monet (permanent exhibition)
In parallel with its exhibitions, the musée des impressionnismes
Giverny is offering a showing of works on the theme of Claude
Monet’s influence on his contemporaries and successive
generations.

This presentation pays tribute to one of the most important
individuals in the history of French art by emphasizing his impact
in France and abroad, from Sisley to the colony of American artists
in Giverny, and from Joan Mitchell to the Japanese painter
Hiramatsu Reiji.
