Would it be worth being king for 7 days?
The summer solstice has just occurred, when ancient Romans celebrated the Vestalia festival to honour Vesta, the Roman goddess
who safeguarded virginity.
However, the appealing solstice festival for Romans was winter´s Saturnalia. It was held in December to honor Saturn, the father of the
gods and was characterized by the suspension of discipline and reversal of the usual order. For example, if you were a slave, which
was very likely considering that almost 50% of the population was, this was really your moment: for one day slaves were served by their
masters; furthermore a mock king was chosen, usually from amongst them. He was permitted to behave in an unrestrained manner for
seven days. Nevertheless, Romans being Romans, the mock king usually got killed at the end of those 7 days.
From the Romans, through the Industrial Revolution, up to modern times, the labour market has considerably, and thankfully, evolved.
As Marx considered it, this could just be a part of "increasing urbanization" but, in any case, this represents an obvious advantage for
all of us who are part of the labour market... We cannot qualify for a seven-day-kingdom, but in the long run we win.

Une fois le solstice d'été passé, les Romains célébraient le festival des Vestales en l'honneur de Vesta, la déesse romaine qui
sauvegardait la virginité.
Mais le festival du solstice le plus attrayant pour les Romains était les Saturnales d'hiver. Il prenait place en décembre en l'honneur
de Saturne, le père des dieux et était caractérisé par la suspension de la discipline et le renversement de l'ordre habituel. Par
exemple, si vous étiez un esclave, comme près de 50% de la population, c'était le bon moment pour vous : pendant une journée, les
esclaves étaient servis par leurs maîtres ; de plus un faux roi était choisi, généralement parmi eux. Il était autorisé à se comporter sans
retenue pendant sept jours. Néanmoins, les Romains étant des Romains, le faux roi était généralement tué à la fin de ces 7 jours.
Depuis les romains, en passant par la révolution industrielle, jusqu'à l'époque moderne, le marché du travail a considérablement, et
heureusement, évolué. Comme Marx le disait, cela pourrait juste être dû à « l'urbanisation croissante » mais, dans tous les cas, cela
représente un avantage évident pour nous tous qui sommes sur le marché du travail... Nous ne pouvons pas bénéficier d'une période
de sept jours de règne, mais à long terme, nous sommes vainqueurs.
