(ex!o be a gold mine. Young australian adventure-seekers
troopers)come back and s€trle down in Rabaul. then under

Quire a few make a fortune. Tim (short for Timothy) turns
up much later. in 1976.but well prepar€dto get his fair share
of rhe loot. regardlessof re8ulalionsand prohibitions which
nobody abidesby anyway.

dozens inside his workshop, along with propellers,religious
cult items. ranges of beacons. weapons. telegraphs. sleering
wheels.ancientdiving gears.but also dainty litlle jars and jugs
madeofbrirtle 8lass.paintedcrockery.which he managesCod
knows how to brinS up whole and unchipp€d. All these
articles fetch Sood prices amon8 collectors. B€tween (wo
dives. he scrap€s. scrubs. polishes and mcnds so experlly (hat
he puts back in(o working condition some Suns that had been
buried in slime for J0 years !
With all the more en(husiasmas lourists are keen on lhis
kind of Sadgeisand there is a ready market for them at ull
(imes- A few more dives do not matter to him and he has
grown so overconfidenrin his performancesand ( blase (to

quote his own words). rhat he does not bother aboul
decompressiontablesany more. lt's jus( guesswork now ând
he is called back to reason occasionally by his buddy. Dany. a
one-armedfellow-diver full ofenergy. who still belongsro the
same reckless breed.
BeinS happy-8o-lucky c'ertainlyhelps to live in places like
Rabâul ! Tim is 29, full of listlesscharm and british phlegm.
has no colour bar or prejudiceof any sort about (he fair sex.
slighrly lishy beSinninSs.well likes as grea! company. and
makinS good money.
Tim loves money. whether in dollars. Kina, francsor lolly.
He bothers about shells that crawl around among his junk
iûasmuch they help him improve his bank account. but he
does not care much really. He brings me some of his casual
carch. in exchangefor a nice meal: valuable additions to my
coflection. such as reddish ontx melanesiae, giant leles with
pink backgrounds. pulchella novaebritanniae Ànd freÀk vilellûs and rigris, all gorged wùh rusr and verdigris. Their lâb€ls
proudly show off the names of (he ghos! vessels which
harboured rheir generatiors sirce the Pâcifrc war ...
Tim picks up cowries only i he finds cones filthy and orher
families ininteresting. The cowrie. you seen ( does no! need a
lor of scrapinS to be glossy D and âlways finds ay buyer.
one day in october 1979. he brings â round objecrwrapped
in a smelly piece of rag. I notice all of a sudden !ha! his eyes
are now !h€ sameliquid blue as the depthswhere he spendsso
much of his time.
"This is â big one, he says.looks like a tigris with clouds on
its back. There was another similar one close by, bur no! easily
âccessibleand my handswere fulland my air running low. So
I lefr it ..."
Whar I take out of the slimy mess leaves me flabbergasted :
"But Tim ! This is a ... a ... a valeûlia 1".
The animal is still there. dead. as it was |aken the niSht
before. His reaclion is typicâl : "wow ! whar a shot I How
much is (hat worth ?"
I show him some of the dealers' lists and he can't believe his
ùwn eyes : "Cosh ! ToniSh! I'll go after the olher one. can r be
vcry far ! We're rich ! Keep lhis one for ûow and ... mum s rhc

I feel overexciredmyself and cant wait ! I clean out rhis
icwef amoaously : a super gem. with a sulcus like a nappu I
I know this day will never end. only passionatecolleclors
like me can understandrhis. And what if he doesn't lind ir ???
8 P.M. ... 9 P.M. ... cant put up with it any longer : I rush ro
Simpson harbour's wharf. peering into rhat darknessrill I feel
giddy. but (he night is pilch black and all I can seeis glimmers
rwinklinS in the breeze. ll wait for whâ! must have b€en
anolner cenlury...
À slight busrleand calls faraway âround the Beehives.rhe
starting of ân oulboard motor lautch towards the opposite
quay ... Now. I am mad with anxiety ... and gel there just in
time !o see Arthur. our champion-presidentof the club. give
up his attempts at mouth-to-mourh ressucirationand burs!
Into sobs.
Dany is there too. his only arm hanginSslack and only jusr
able to mumble as he sightsme : "He spat a little Breenwater.
too lale now. They tried everything and now are exhausted ...
Tha( night I cursed all the cowries of the sea- Had I been
well (rained with more guts in dark corners down there. I
might have gone with im. But then my performancesdid not
exceed snorkelling and reef-combinS in dayliShr. I learn thar
crazy Tim had gone diving on his own, againstall elementary
rules. That the boat-boy. realizin8 Tim was no! coming up.
took l5 minutes to steam back ashore and get some help.
.\rthur and Dany found him in 190 feet in a most unusual
p()sture.his hand sruck under a ledge and his mouthpiecc
floutinS âround. his tank still half ful..

My throat is so light I cant speak. I fecl guilly withoul
reason- Nobody on earth could havc dissuaded him: -Iim

hâd to male a clean breast ol it. so told Arthur the lot.
With lillle enlhusiasm, hc wen down with Dany one
evening. jus! to se€. They came back up empty.handed.
depress€d.silent, well awârc Tim was câpable of any kind of
folfy for a vqlehlio's ptelly face, as he would for a womqJn's.
For weel.s, the area was dcs€r!€d and taboo, then human
acrivity started again around the Hakkai Maru and divers
visired the place as on a pilgrimaSe, with respect and awe.
Dany eventually found the object. on anoaher of thos€
moonless niShls. He was in a bad t€mp€r. îo valentia in
history had ever rais€d so litd€ enthusiasm !
After fivinS in an aquarium for some lime, ralentia 2 tottnd
irs place in a showcase at the club. r€served lo dan8erous
species. betwecn a slonefish and a s€asnake soaked in
formaline.
The deadly beauty soon spread discord among the club
members : some curs€ was hanging overhead which reminded
us of some lcthal historical emerald often mentioned in
lrterature.

ln the course of the followinS weeks. the tâil of â cyclonc
swept the shcd and ahe roof collspsed on the lab where all rhr
livinS marin€ speciesperished. The secretary found hers€lf in
hospital with a broken leg and Arthur's philippino wife 8ave
birth to a still-born.
At the same time. my liver played up very badly and my
housc was bur8led. Dany like many others was a vic(im of the
spcll of dinShi that invaded the lown and did never quire
recover. A few marriages broke up and two invaded riSer
sharks were sighted in rhe bay. Nor all : volcanic acriviry
increâsêd dramatically with almost daily quakes up ro
Richter 8 !
No doubt about it: we had come to look upon the beautiful
object with suspicion and dread. the time had really come ro
get rid of the evil eye, the ill omen. rhe killer. Even the less
superstitious agreed to thar and noone wanted ir.
Auction it off to club's prolit (preferably (o some jap
tourist) ? Throw it back irto the sea? Burn it? The cluh
eventually aSreed !o donate i( to the Museum. on rhc
neiShbouringisland. where it will recline in neulral zone. \vc
hope. lill lhe end of papuan times and where its admirers will
ignore irs ruc story.

great coll€ctions do not n€cessarily end up in rapacious
and mercantile claws ! Neither will Bob da Motta's fabulous
Cone coll€ction, since the dear old man hâs just given ii to the
large public of shell lovers of the world.
After having b€en eûiched by the acquisition of other
famous collections, such as Rear Admiral Bitler's (USÂ) last
july, the now historical collection is ear-marled for transfer to
International Conidae Society.
I quote Bob's letter : "A semi-soverMerl institution called
TORRALTA who are responsible for promoting tourism in
Portugal, have agrc€d to build a mus€um to hous€ thc
collcction in a place 40 km south of Lisbon. They have alreâdy
sent an air-ticket io Walter Cernohorsky who will be in Lisbon
on january 7th to finalize terms, and ICS can expect finally to

I in New Caledonia(seearticle in Rossiniananc l8).
.,_ Concerning existence or not of Cyproea minoride,É
(nota l0). I have found several b€ached cowries in Èood
repair, difTerent lrom C. flmbriata, rhat I recognized as io be
C. minoride s. The place is on a coÉl reef near Thio (East
Coas0. Others shells are found at this place. but most often
collected beached I C. cicercula, helvola, hirundo. totûlini.
Their recent death donl let any confusion âbour their
recognization.
- Eack lo Cypraea lutea lutea,l can assure thai lhis cowry
lives in our lagoon. At Queen Ctarlottes'Cap€ (South of New
Caledonia). during a low ride in A uSust | 98 | , several C. ,t,lrea
lutea hare been found by a friend who sâid to me he had
collected all the cowries at rhe same place. All were alive and
perfect. Towards coral re€ffall. I collected noone by snorkefing. Wiih C. lutea lutea, we also found C. stolida, poraria,
cicerculo, osellus aidleltrd. Not any C. lutea humphreysii had
been found.

On le trouve soit sur le plcteru de s.ble sitûé de 55 à tlo m
de fond, soit eDrelr|otrtrntsur la Dent€jùsqu'au tombant dont
le bls est stauéI 40 160 m suivrnt les endroits. Sur cette
pente,on le péchedetrsles couléesou les trous de srble. ll est
bon de savoir qu'rucuû, à mr connaissaùce,n'e été récolté
sous les blocsd€ coraux morls très nombreux sul cette Dente,
II semble que Conus moluccensissoit présent sur toute la
Côte Oùest, du grand récif des Belep au récif du Sud.
Quelquesexemplairesont été trouyés à I'extérieur des récifs
de la Côte Est et à l'lle des Pins.
Jusqu'à présent, le seul moyen pour le pêcher est la
plongéeen scrphrndre autonome.De rares essaisde pêcheru
filet n'ont rien donné. l,a drague,yu la configurrtion du fond
semble lssez difficile à employer. Ces conditions de pêche
font que Coan"_moluccensis est toujours assez rar€ dans
I'ensemble. Bien qu'cn ccrtains endroits précis, il soit plus
courânt: le seul obstacle est la profondeur qui limile le
nombre des plongeurset égalemerlt,le peu de temps quc I'on
peut passerà chercher à ces profoûdeurs.
Je voudrais frire r€marquer que nos Corul moluctensis,
bien que peu différcnts de ceux d'Okinawâ ou des Célèbes,
ont Ie privilège d'{tteindre de plus grendes tâilles. Noùs
détenons sûrement le record du monde en tâille arec un
exemplrire lrouvé par
Bârgibant mesurant 58,5 mm. Les
spécimensde Dlus de 53
^. mm sont lout de même exceptionn€ls.
Conus moluccensisexiste en Nouyelle-Calédonicsous la
forme lissc et la forme granulcùse,

I wôufd fike to add some precisionson our Conusmoluccensi\
I which we call here Coals merleti . lt is always collecLed
on the outer side of the barrier-reef. between 40 and 80
melers.
It is found either on the sand step belweeo 55 to 80 m deep.
or on the slope rising from 40 to 60 m ro rhe coral wall.
On this slope. ir is always collecredin the sand flows or in
the holesfull ofsând. lt is to be noticed that ir has never been
found. at least in my knowledge. under the numerous coral
blocks found on rhe slope.
It seems fhat Conus moluccensis is present on the whole
West Coast. from reefsin the South to rhe great reef of Belep
lslands. where â specimenhas been found. Some specimens
has been collectedon the outer side of the reef on the East
Coast. and some dead specimensa! the Isle of Pines.
Up !o now. the only way to collecr it. has been scubâdiving.
Some rare attemptsof fishing ners failed. l)redging. due to
the kind of bolrom. seemsdifficulr lo be considered.These
difficult coflecting conditions keep the Corus noluccensis a
semi rare species.allhought it seemsquite common in a very
few places.The number of rhe divers is limired by the deprh.
The collecring time is âlso restricted by lhe shorr available
divinS time.
I would like to notice that our Corr&srnol!.,ccensr's,
ahhough
not much differen! from other locarions(Okinawa. Célèbes
Is...). has (he priviledge of being !he largesr. We probably
have the world record sizewirh a 58.5 mrD specimencollecled
locently by A. Bargibânr

about the reborn of a star. Well, it is back again. I want to
speak of :
Cyplaea aurantium CMELIN. 1791.
During the week from ls( to 6th febrùary 81. P.A.
and C.
GAGNAIRE, was diving with J.C. ESTML
MILLOT. outsidethe outer reef of POINDIMIE (Easl Coast).
He has collected,at a depth of 30 m. a "golden cowry". The
specimenwas dead. but in very Sood condition. It measures
1 0 8 . 0m m .
One other confirmation on lhe existance of this species in
New Caledonia.
