June 16, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Student Writers Abound in District Writing Contests CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – From grade 4 to 12, over 200 students have demonstrated their writing prowess through two district writing contests. Students in grades 4 to 6 wrote for a contest called Write Out Loud. This unique competition was organized by a smaller group of students for their peers and included both a story and poetry competition. Prizes were awarded for a student choice and an adult panel choice. The student choice results of that competition were as follows: grade 4 poetry Heather Stevens (Ecole des Deux Mondes), grade 4 story Ben Lowe (Ecole des Deux Mondes); grade 5 poetry Max Marsh (Pinecrest), grade 5 story Shay-Anne White (Pinecrest); grade 6 poetry Wyatt Hallstrom (Sandowne). The adult choice results were as follows: grade 4 story Caelan Ostrosser (Ecole des Deux Mondes); grade 5 poetry first place Sarah Bains (Pinecrest), grade 5 poetry second place Hannah Spencer (Pinecrest); grade 5 story first place Jasmine MacGregor (Ecole des Deux Mondes), grade 5 story second place Jordan Dean (Georgia Park); grade 6 poetry first place Kalyn Borrie (Ecole des Deux Mondes), grade 6 poetry second place Dylan Heemskerk (Penfield); grade 6 story first place Paige Wagner (Penfield), grade 6 story second place Naruka Umemura (Ecole des Deux Mondes). Older students, from grades 7 to 12, wrote a short story in an afternoon. Their day started with a workshop given by local authors, Harold Rhenisch and Mary Ellen Lang. After lunch, they wrote their own stories, in just over two hours. Winners from Ecole Phoenix Middle School were: grade 7 first place Madison Ostler, second place Cheylyn Lougheed; grade 8 first place Cathryn Chase; grade 9 first place Maia Windrim, second place Elizabeth Thompson. Winners from Southgate Middle School were: grade 7 first place Dawson MacKay, second place Ashleigh McGraw; grade 8 first place Donovan Coates, second place Jordan Foy; grade 9 first place Hayley Craddock, second place Liam Dalle Vedove. At the secondary level, winners from Timberline were: James Repstock, Kelly Whiteside and Rachel Thornton-Hughes. Carihi’s winning writers were: Ally Choo, Nathan Gordon and Rebecca Forjan.
