Mercury space capsule used by Cdr Walter
Schirra to make six orbits of the earth on
October 3, 1962, is being shown o n the N A S A
stand. This vehicle flew over 50 countries in
nine hours, covering 160,000 miles at a speed
of 17,400 m.p.h. A full-scale model of the
two-seat Gemini cabin,
also built by
McDonnell, is being shown.
T h e following models are being shown:
F-4C with stores; F-4B; Mercury spacecraft;
Gemini spacecraft; Mercury-Atlas combination; RF-101. In addition there are four large
murals, including one showing the Gemini
rendezvous and one of Mercury in orbit,
plus a large montage presenting a pictorial
history of McDonnell products.
Depuis la mise sous presse des informations
dans une page precedente, la McDonnell a
annonce quelle exposerait sur le stand de la
NASA la capsule Mercury dans laquelle Cdr
Walter Schirra a accompli six orbites le 3
octobre, 1962. Cette capsule a survole 50 pays
en neuf heures, une distance de 258,000km a
une vitesse de 28,080km/hr.
McDonnell expose

bi-place Gemini.

The French Navy's stand carries a model
illustrating an air defence situation at sea, with
the carriers Clemenceau and Foch, Alize,
Etendard and Crusader aircraft, two Suffren
class frigates armed with Masurca surface-toair missiles and escort vessels armed with
Tartars. There is also an air-sea rescue
tableau. The Navy will also be taking part in
the flying display with a formation of nine
Etendards, an individual Etendard and two
Etendards demonstrating flight refuelling.

T h e full range of ice protection, control and
detection equipment is shown by Napier's
Luton Division on a stand which they are
sharing jointly with their Continental Spraymat manufacturing licensees, Bronzavia S.A.,
of Paris, and Westfalische Metall Industrie
K . G . of West Germany.
The largest single item o n view is a Spraymat-applied main rotor blade of the Westland
Wessex helicopter—one of a set which successfully completed a rigorous winterization test
programme in Canada. A Rolls-Royce Dart
propeller spinner, a wing-tip section of the
Transall C.160. a leading-edge slat of the new
H F B Hansa 320, and a Turbomeca Bastan
engine intake, propeller and spinner—all with
Spraymat—are shown.
Sierracote electrically heated aircraft windscreens, windows and canopies include two
windscreens for the Transall C.160, one of
glass construction and one of plastic. In
addition, examples of cockpit canopies for
high-speed aircraft, and a helmet visor illustrating the infra-red protection Sierracote
affords the pilot, are exhibited. A Sierracote
heated window used in the pilot's cockpit of
the VC10 is also present.

The R A F is to participate in the flying and
static display. High-speed aerobatics will be
performed on Sunday, June 16, by " T h e Firebirds"—ten Lightning all-weather fighters of
N o 56 Sqn. One of their most striking
manoeuvres is their take-off and 80° climb.
On Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16,
there will be a demonstration of a scramble
take-off by a Vulcan B.2, and a Victor B.2 will
also be displayed. In the static park is a
Vulcan B.2 with a Blue Steel stand-off b o m b ,
a Victor B.2 and an Argosy C . l .

This company is showing its type 40 supersonic towed target developed for the French
air force and already towed at a speed of Mach
1.25 at 31,000ft by a Mirage III. T h e target
is also towed by Vautours. It is mounted on
an external weapons pylon with a reel of
3,600ft of nylon rope. Three flares, each
lasting three minutes, are ignited by radio
command from the tug to increase infrared
target value, and a 7in Luneberg lens increases
radar area. The nylon tow-rope is sheared by
explosive bolts at the end of a mission. An
optical miss-distance recorder uses batteries
of photoelectric cells in the nose and tail of
the target, from which the successive indications are plotted and telemetered to the ground.
Target structure is of light alloys, there being
no wings and a simple cruciform tail.
