INFORMATION SUR LE STAGE / INTERNSHIP POSITION INFORMATION Titre du stage / Internship Position Title: Income Generation Project Assistant Pays / Country: Dominican Republic Ville / City: Santo Domingo Secteur prioritaire / Sector: Stimulating sustainable economic growth Description du stage / Position Description: Project Description: Marginalized youth in the Dominican Republic are a vulnerable population with complex needs. Many face poor employment prospects, uncertain futures and lack basic skills. HIV positive youth are especially vulnerable. These youth have little recourse when they are denied jobs or lose them based on their HIV status. Through a self-help initiative called “K de Cafe” or “K as in Cafe” we have launched a social enterprise to provide employment opportunities and job training for marginalized youth. “K de Cafe” reinvests profits into the community. It is both a training facility and a commercially run enterprise including a fully equipped café. It provides youth the opportunity to learn work, life skills, job connections, and career development assistance. It aims to improve the skills and employability of marginalized youth encouraging them to develop enterprise capability, communication and planning skills. The youth are paid entry-level wages and are accountable for duties and responsibilities similar to those of any ordinary business venture. Position Description: The intern will : contribute to existing income-generation projects of the cafe, assist in executing the business plan and help identify new markets. be directly involved in the implementation of the project, contributing to its success and improving the livelihoods of socially excluded youth including young people living with HIV/AIDS. learn about the Dominican Republic the work of the DR organizations and the challenges being faced by marginalized DR communities affected by HIV&AIDS; provide support for revising and developing small business plans help to identify new business markets and other income generation activities assist with the development and expansion of existing income generation activities Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this internship would have an interest in business management, particularly in the hospitality industry. Someone with a creative flair and/or an interest in managing a café would be a strong fit for this position. Working knowledge of Spanish and/or desire to improve Spanish Page 1 of 2 would be a great asset. Experience running a café or in the tourism or hospitality industry would be an added benefit Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program, you must: be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident be a post-secondary graduate—graduate of a degree or diploma program from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP (collège d'enseignement général et professionnel) be between the ages of 19 and 30 have not previously participated in an internship within DFATD's IYIP initiative be legally entitled to work in Canada Application Deadline: November 15, 2015 Please send CV and cover letter to: [email protected] Date de début du stage / Start Date of Internship: January 2016 Date de fin du stage / End Date of Internship: July 2016 Organisation d’accueil / Host Organization: Local Host: Centro de Orientacion e Investigacion Integral (COIN) Canadian Partner: Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development Détails au sujet de l’organisation d’accueil / Host Organization Details: The Centro de Orientación e Investigación (COIN) is an NGO with twentyfive years of experience working in HIV prevention, care and treatment with key populations in the Dominican Republic. COIN runs a community clinic for different key populations most affected by HIV for many years. The health services are vital to these groups, who often face discrimination in the mainstream medical community and, as a result, often do not receive adequate medical care.
