MESSAGE FROM THE IFFS PRESIDENT CLAUDINO DE JESUS

The General Assembly o f the Internatio nal Federatio n o f Film So cieties - IFFS is the largest demo cratic exercise o f go vernance, when its members set the
go als and select the leaders who will implement them to gether with the
asso ciated co untries. In 20 13 we celebrate the centenary o f the wo rld film
so cieties mo vement (Cinéma du Peuple (Paris) 19 13). The General Assembly
is part o f a larger event that includes the Wo rld Film So cieties Fo rum, with
highlights fo r the Arab Wo rld film so cieties mo vement and especially Tunisia.
The events will be co nducted fro m 0 1 to 0 7 April 20 13 and will be o f paramo unt
impo rtance fo r the wo rld film so cieties mo vement because it is the first time that
the IFFS will co nduct its General Assembly in Africa, and no tably in the Arab
wo rld. This GA co nfirms o ur o rganisatio n's interest beyo nd Euro pe,
enco uraging the expansio n o f its membership and activities to all co ntinents.
We emphasize that it is symbo lically striking and deeply co nscio us that o ur
main event is held in Tunisia in the year o f the centennial celebratio n o f the
internatio nal film so ciety mo vement - especially in the present revo lutio nary
circumstances o f the co llective co nstructio n and deepening o f Tunisian
demo cracy.
Demo cracy is fo r us a universal value that unites us and affirms o ur
co mmitments to the public, their rights and, mo re specifically, their right to
access audio visual wo rks fro m all cultures, genres, trends and natio nalities,
always celebrating the rich cultural diversity o f o ur peo ple.
PLANNING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The Tunisian Federatio n o f Film So cieties suggests a o ne-week-lo ng meeting in o rder to ensure the depth and
co nscientio usness o f the General Assembly’s wo rk. We are trying to resume a traditio n that wo uld make o f this
assembly an o ccasio n to strengthen the ties between the different acto rs o f the internatio nal mo vement o f film so ciety .
Every day will be divided in two wo rk perio ds: mo rning and afterno o n. The evenings will have a festive aspect, being
centred o n film so cieties’ fundamental activity: the screening-debate o f mo vies. The seven days o f the general assembly
represent ten perio ds o f wo rk that will be o rganised as the fo llo wing:

As part o f the exchange o f co mpetences o n the subject o f film so ciety mo vement, numero us wo rksho ps ( facilitating
debates , strategic planning , training o f film so cieties mo derato rs) and seminars ( having fo r main theme the
cinemato graphic culture and the co ntributio n o f a cinemato graphic language in facilitating mo vie analysis) will be held in
parallel to the o ther activities.

The Wo rld Fo rum o f Film So cieties. Ro und table o n the centennial o f cineclubism
Altho ugh there is no t a written histo ry o f the film so cieties mo vement, peo ple were used to co nsider that cineclubs
began in the twenties, after the Lo uis Delluc’s Jo urnal du Cinéclub. In fact, that was a revue that pro mo ted sparse events
with film exhibitio ns. Undo ubtedly, the name cinéclub – which is much o lder (the first film theater in Paris, the Omnia
Pathé, had o ne ciné-club, but it was a gathering o f the so called industry, to pro mo te the new business) – spread no t
o nly in France but all o ver the wo rld during that third decade o f the century, but the actual activity has its ro o ts lo ng
befo re.
The reco gnitio n o f cineclubism after tho se so cieties fo unded by Delluc o r Ricio tto Canudo is pro bably explained by the
fact that they were led by and directed to cultivated peo ple, and their activities co uld be translated into rich speeches o r
cultivated texts, and their screenings frequented by impo rtant perso nalities. These “qualities” made then reco gnizable by
the Academy.
But cineclubs have their ro o ts far befo re that. Specially amo ng wo rkers clubs and so cieties, the use o f magic lanterns to
illustrate co nferences and debates was co mmo n since the last quarter o f the nineteenth century. With the arrival o f the
cinemato graph, it was quickly ado pted to pro mo te mutual aid, cultural enhancement and entertainment amo ng wo rkers,
immigrants and the co mmunity in general. Rapidly it evo lved fro m a to o l to impro ve discussio ns to the center o f the
discussio ns. And that was cineclubism.
The co mmemo ratio n o f o ur centenary is based o n the first well do cumented o rganizatio n that asso ciated peo ple in a
demo cratic way to see, discuss and even pro duce film. In 19 13, in Paris, was created the Cinema du Peo ple – the
Peo ple’s Cinema: an anarchist co o perative o rganized to create a peo ple’s cinema, since co mmercial films seemed to
o nly distract, mislead and alienate peo ple. Their mo tto , which didn’t lo se any actuality, was: To Entertain, Educate and
Emancipate!
To present and discuss the histo rical aspects o f this century o f cineclubism and its relatio ns to the histo ry o f mo ving
images, this ro und table will be led by Gabriel Ro dríguez, film histo rian and theo rist o f internatio nal reco gnitio n, fro m the
So rbo nne University; Germain Lacasse, specialist in o ral practices in the cinema device, fro m the University o f Mo ntréal,
Gabiel Ro dríguez, researcher o f the Histo ry o f film so cieties' mo vement in the UNAM (Mèxico ) and Felipe Macedo ,
who se studies fo cus o n public and cineclubism, and is directo r o f the Memo rial da América Latina o f São Paulo .
