Version française Vol 6. no. 12 - December 2, 2007 In this issue: Retreat #2 Invitation 2007 AUM Community Survey St-Luc Indoor Development League Update Graphic Designer Required for Discours UPA Club Championships 2007 Calendar of Events Retreat #2 Invitation Dear Members, On Saturday, November 3rd, 2007, the AUM had its first strategic planning retreat. This first retreat focused on getting the project off the ground and addressing the fundamental issues facing the association. The intent was to initiate a first draft of the planning fundamentals: Mission, Vision, Values and Core Objectives. Why go through this sometimes tedious and always challenging work, you say? There are two good reasons. First, strategic planning will help the AUM identify what it really is and where it is in its development as a Montreal sporting association. Just to be clear, the AUM is not a service company. It is an association of Ultimate players that has complete autonomy in deciding what, where, when, and how it wants to go, and why. And right now, we have the privilege and the time to develop this file:///C|/Users/Patrick%20Vigneault/Desktop/AUM/www.montrealultimate.ca/affaires/AFFAIReS%20Vol6%20No12.html[2009-04-23 12:50:38] AFFAIReS Vol 6 No 12 strategic plan of ours. Second, the AUM has some maturing to do. From its first successful initiative and through the years of phenomenal growth, the AUM sprung from a few visionary and dedicated players to being the largest Ultimate players association east of Ottawa, with 2200 players. This has brought many challenges which faced the same spirited and passionate people that have helped the association in the past. The new AUM must change to meet the many challenges that lie ahead. We must question all our actions, mental models, and traditions; keep the ones that will help us in the future, and replace the ones that cannot with new ones using all our spirit, respect, creativity and passion. We must develop a culture of learning and continuous improvement, a culture of leading and planning with ideas and spirit. This is what we are cultivating in the future retreats. The first step is what has been accomplished in our first retreat. In the next few days, you will see some of the fruits of our labour. I encourage you to continue critiquing and improving upon this initial work. This can be done by send your comments to the [email protected] and by posting them in the Strategic Planning Section of the AUM Bulletin Board: http://www.montrealultimate.ca/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=17. The participants of this first retreat have accomplished more than anyone in our short history. They have provided the AUM with a solid base for our ongoing discussions, both amongst the many dedicated volunteers, but with all members. The buzz is growing, and growing and is affecting the Ultimate community in Montreal, in this province, and in the rest of Canada. As our representatives meet and exchange on all aspects of Ultimate, people are looking at the AUM to see what, when and how we will accomplish our plan. They can be proud of what they have started. Our second retreat, What We Do, will focus on tweaking our Mission, Vision, Values and Core Objectives, as well as defining and refining what we offer our members. We have already started this work through the cognitive mapping of the issues at the first retreat. Several changes will be made to the format of the second retreat in line with the comments we received during the first retreat. Thanks again to all those who participated in the AUM’s first strategic planning retreat. Let’s keep investing in our future. See you at the second retreat on Saturday, December 8. Look to your email for further details as the date approaches.
