her comprehensive three-volume series Women and
Christianity (Dublin: Columba Press, Ottawa: Novalis,
and Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2000-2003). Her most
recent book is Praying With the Women Mystics.
Professor Malone completed a doctorate in patristic
studies and taught history and patristic theology at a
time when women were not permitted access to Roman
Catholic theological study. She helped pioneer not only
new approaches to theological and historical research
but new teaching methods appropriate to the rise of
lay theology students and their need for theology to
connect with their everyday lives. A founding member of
Vox Feminarum: Canadian Journal of Feminist Spirituality,
she also served at many levels in the Archdiocese of
Toronto.

Women’s own Christian history
through the ages exists mostly
in remnants and fragments,
not enough to permit a comprehensive picture to emerge.
On the contrary, a substantial
amount of material prescribing
how Christian women are to
live bears no resemblance to
women’s authentic experience
and does not reflect their voices.
Still, these fragments taken together provide a
fascinating and deeply moving alternative version
of Christianity. Particularly in the fourth, twelfththirteenth, sixteenth and more recent centuries,
women combined faithfulness to the «tradition» with
their own extraordinary ingenuity in creating their own
space in theology, spirituality, and especially mysticism.
Mary Malone, feminist theologian and historian,
is Professor Emerita of Theology at the Toronto School
of Theology, and taught at the University of Waterloo
and St. Jerome’s University. She is best known for

patristique à une époque où l’on ne permettait pas aux
femmes d’étudier la théologie catholique romaine. Elle
a contribué à l’émergence de nouvelles approches de
la recherche théologique et historique, et introduit de
nouvelles méthodes d’enseignement orientées vers les
étudiantes et étudiants laïques, qui tiennent compte
de leur besoin d’une théologie en relation avec leur vie
quotidienne. Membre fondatrice de Vox Feminarum :
Canadian Journal of Feminist Spirituality, elle a aussi
œuvré dans l’archidiocèse de Toronto.

L’histoire chrétienne des femmes
se présente dans des fragments
épars, de sorte qu’il est difficile
d’en dégager une vue d’ensemble.
Mais à l’inverse, une grande partie
de la littérature où l’on prescrit
comment les femmes chrétiennes
devraient vivre leur foi ne reflète
ni le vécu des femmes, ni leur voix.
Pourtant, ces fragments révèlent une version
alternative du christianisme à la fois fascinante et profondément touchante. En particulier, au cours des 4e,
12e, 13e et 16e siècles de même que plus récemment, les
femmes ont fait preuve de fidélité à ‘la tradition’, mais
aussi d’ingéniosité en créant un espace qui leur est propre
en théologie, en spiritualité, mais tout spécialement
dans le domaine du mysticisme.
