Born in Montreal in 1951, Allain is constantly exploring different and difficult media such as steel and plaster to create large, richly coloured works with tremendous texture. He regularly re-invents the spatial relationships of his graphic plane, reconciling the abstract with the figurative, the implicit with the explicit. Since 1984, he has lived and worked in Brooklyn and has shown in many important galleries and museums in Montreal, Toronto and New York. 2005 2004 2003 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996-97 1996 1994 1989 1986 1984 1983 1981 2006 Maîtrise / M.F.A., Hunter College, New York Baccalauréat en arts visuels / B.A. in Visual Arts, University of Ottawa, Ottawa Principales expositions individuelles Selected Solo Exhibitions (*Itinérante / Travelling) 2006 1991 1990 Principales expositions collectives Selected Group Exhibitions (*Itinérante / Travelling) Formation Education 1984-86 1979-82 1992 Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago Genereux Grunwald Gallery, Toronto Julian Pretto Gallery, New York Galerie Samuel Lallouz, Montréal Julian Pretto Gallery, New York Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago Julian Pretto Gallery, New York Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago Julian Pretto Gallery, New York The Knitting Factory, New York Hunter Gallery, New York The Core Island Complex, London Regional Art and Historical Museum, London, Ontario (A&B Associés) Transformer Site, Gallery 101, Ottawa (A&B Associés) Dépot Central, Saw Gallery, Ottawa (A&B Associés) René Pierre Allain: Drawings, Olin Hall Breezeway Gallery, Whitman College, WA New Work, Drabinsky Gallery, Toronto Tablets, Roger Ramsey Gallery, Chicago Constructing Painting, Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary Tablets, Drabinsky Gallery, Toronto New Work, Winchester Galleries, Victoria, BC Disjunctures, Galerie de Bellefeuille, Montréal Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago New Steel Paintings, Stefan Stux Gallery, New York Galerie de Bellefeuille, Montréal Stefan Stux Gallery Lonsdale Gallery, Toronto Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago The Steel Paintings: 1991-1996 * University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Waterloo; Art Gallery of Peel, Brampton; Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, Owen Sound Steelwork, Littlejohn Contemporary, New York Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary Genereux Grunwald Gallery, Toronto 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1997 Selections from the LeWitt Collection, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Black and White, Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary Paint on Metal, Tucson Museum Tucson, Arizona of Art, Armored, curated by René Pierre Allain, Planet Thailand, Brooklyn, NY Clear Intentions, Rotunda Gallery, Brooklyn, NY Holiday Paper, Drabinsky Gallery, Toronto Samadhi: The Contemplation of Space, curated by Robert C.
