1 LOCATIONS
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Geosciences has two student computer
labs:
• PC-lab with 10 IBM PC-compatibles in F 1215,
• PC-lab with 10 thin clients in F 1214.
The doors have card locks. The labs are open between 7.00-23.00 on weekdays and
9.00-23.00 on weekends. After 23.00 the security guard comes around and shuts down
the labs.
Only students in an educational programme affiliated with, or a course run by, the
Department can log in here.

EQUIPMENT
2.1 PC-lab F1215
This PC-lab is designed for instruction of half classes with up to 20 students (2 on each
machine). The room is equipped with
• 10 Dell Optiplex GX280 (P4-3.0 GHz, 1.0 GB memory, 40 GB hard disc,
10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet) under Windows XP Pro;
• A common networked laser printer on the DOKUS system. This is replaced by
DOPS from approx. October 1st and then you can pay your pages from a PayEx
account.
The PC:s identify themselves to a Windows Terminal Server (WTS), which stores and
runs advanced programs. Any single PC has just a few programs installed locally.
Information can be stored on memory sticks or your own area on the document server.
2.2 PC-lab F1214
This is a PC-lab for group teaching with at most 20 students at a time. It has
• 10 thin clients (SunRay 2) that connects to the WTS;
• A common networked laser printer on the DOKUS system.
The thin clients use the same terminal server as in PC-lab F1215. Information can be
stored on memory sticks or your own area on the document server.
2.3 Servers
The WTS, Dajm, is run by the Computer Centre under Windows 2003 Server. It runs all
client sessions in the primary memory, and displays the results on the local monitors.
The main advantage with a WTS is that it is easier to maintain program installations,
since there is only one installation point.
All student documents are stored on a university-wide “disc cloud” that is, in principle,
reachable from all university computer labs. Each student can store a maximum of 250
MB on the central discs.
3 PROGRAMS
The Computer Centre installs and configures the programs for the computer labs. Any
division or teacher that wants to have a program on the WTS shall contact the
Department’s computer administrator, and after installation test it themselves in the PClabs.
The PC-lab:s can have new program versions installed in the examination period before
each quarter. Testing takes place in the two weeks before that, so any teacher who wants
a new program installed needs to contact the person responsible for the PC-labs.
All of our student PC work places have access to standard programs for word
processing and computations, check below.

The personal computers in F1215 host programs that are not suited for running on the
Terminal Server. In addition, they have an RDP-client to make contact with the terminal
server and run its programs. It means in most cases the PC:s are only thick clients.

ADMINISTRATION
4.1 Categories
To use the computer lab PC:s, students must have their own user codes and personal
passwords. Codes and passwords can be fetched at the student ServiceDesk in the
Library.
New students will have one of two types of user accounts
1. Personal account without time limit, e.g., anyone in an affiliated programme;
2. Personal account with a time limit set for a course duration (normally a quarter).
All teachers can log in with there own user and password for testing and demonstrating
programs.
4.2 Creation of new accounts
The central identification server issues all student accounts and passwords. Codes and
passwords are automatically transferred to the local systems.
Note! A student must have a current registration in a programme or course to get an
account. The Department does not issue local student accounts.
4.3 Distribution of accounts
The central ServiceDesk at the Library distributes codes and passwords.
4.4 Limitations
A student user has 250 MB of personal storage area on the central document server.
Within the university WebMail system, 20 MB is allotted, but this will change when a
new system comes on-line. Printouts through the DOKUS/DOPS system are charged to
each student’s accounts.
4.5 Operations & maintenance
The Computer Centre is responsible for the operation of servers and network. It
configures the student workstations for general programs: operating system, e-mail,
Web-browser and the office suite.
Installation of application programs specific to a Division is debited to the Division in
question. Hardware service and emergencies are covered by a service contract between
the Computer Centre and the Department of Chemical Engineering & Geosciences.

HANDLING
5.1 Log in
5.1.1 F1215
1. Log in on the local machine by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and the
login-screen emerges. Type in your user-id and password; however, remember that
Windows treats lower and upper case characters differently. Make sure you are on
domain LTU. The first login takes some time, approx. 15 seconds. Now it is possible
to run locally installed programs and the Web-browser.
2. In most cases, one continues the log in by clicking on the icon for Dajm (the
terminal server). Here a new login is required, and thereafter one can access all the
installed programs.
5.1.2 F1214
In the thin client lab, the log in takes place directly in step 2 above.
5.2 Logging out
First close all applications and windows, and remove any CD or USB-memory from the
machine.
On Windows XP machines, the log out is a two-step process. Firstly, select logoff from
the terminal server. Secondly, log out from the local machine.
5.3 Diskettes
If you need to copy to a movable format, write a CD or use an USB-memory stick.
5.4 Storage
A user can store 250 MB on the central disc area and only there.
5.5 Printouts
Print-outs are administered by the DOKUS/DOPS system.
5.6 Change of password for the computer labs and e-mail
You change password through the student’s portal. Any change is then distributed to the
local computer laboratories at LTU, and to the central WebMail system for students.
6 IMPORTANT WEB-ADDRESSES
The University has several addresses that are good to know:
• http://www.ltu.se/tkg for the Dept. of Chem. Eng. & Geosciences (most pages
do have an English version),
• https://portal.student.ltu.se/ is the student Web-portal with individual
information about courses taken and selected, direct connection to the WebMail,
and loads of announcements,
• https://fronter.com/ltu/ is the Web-system that most courses utilise,
• http://www.ltu.se/edu/nystudent/stud/d24782/1.54242 is the e-address for the
Adobe Connect Pro communication system.
