Each page of this summer edition is an invitation to travel. Turn the pages and let yourselves get carried away. Everyone has a dream, not exactly the same, nor completely different… A harpist’s dreams, a harper’s dreams, a harpmaker’s dreams, a composer’s dreams… Travel in time guided by the sound of harps, harps born from a dream themselves bearers of dreams : Joel Garnier’s blue harp, Martine Flaissier and the Trio Controverse’s “Blue”, Alan Stivell’s electric harp, Camac Harps’ brand new Celtic harps with magical names, the Merlin, the Stivell, the Naccara harp choir, the future MIDI harp… Let yourselves get carried away beyond the seas to the Tropics, into the forests of Africa and Brazil where the precious woods from which Camac now carve harps of dreams are born and ripened: zebrano, kevazingo… This is a summer edition which loudly protests against the idea that one should ever give up on one’s dreams, but rather hold them, until they eventually grow.Whether they are nourished by ancient legends or by futuristic visions, it is with patience, ingenuity and perseverance that these dreams may become reality so that at last an exotic tree may become a precious harp, the harp can become a synthesiser, a group of musicians may become the Trio Controverse or Naccara, and that a few music notes may be assembled under the fingers of today’s enchanters and metamorphose into a concerto or an opera… Peruse the pages of this summer edition and let yourself be captivated by the magic of a legendary instrument, a living legend. “CARTE BLANCHE” CONCERTS “Concert-Meeting around the harp and electro acoustic music” Once again the hall was full for this “Carte Blanche” concert on the 14th April 2005 at the Espace Camac in Paris. And yet the originality and innovation of this “Concert-Meeting” which audaciously combined the dignified and respectable harp with electro acoustic music, so contemporary and not yet “classic”, had the Séverine Lévy potential to surprise or even discourage even those with the best intentions. Meanwhile curiosity reigned and ensured that this evening was a downright success. Produced by the “Great Bear Company” with the support of the SACEM (Society of Authors, Composers and Editors of Music) and the DRAC (Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs) of the “Ile-de-France”, this event took place as part of the “harps and electro acoustic” pedagogic residences of the company in the 13th arrondissement of Paris and in Bussy-Saint-Georges. This was a fine evening entirely within the “spirit” of Camac Harps who are always on the lookout for the opportunity to patronize the meeting of harp lovers within a warm and convivial atmosphere. On this evening the following responded to the harp maker’s invitation: the contemporary composers Alexandre Levy and Ake Parmerud, the harpists Severine Levy and Sandrine Chatron, the soprano Sylvia Kevorkian, and the surprising maestro of the acousmonium, Sebastien Chatron, as well as the future generation of conservatory pupils. A wager won since youth was the focus of this surprising and occasionally disconcerting evening, resolutely turned towards the future, as it was full of promises of projects which would stimulate the curiosity and the appetite of these budding artists. Having come to discover the instruments upon which they could tomorrow play the music of our time, they were thrown into a dream world, that of their elders - composers and artists - which became a reality that evening, a reality that they will forge in turn thanks to such concerts. This was an evening of discovery thanks to a programme which progressively guided the audience of the amplified Celtic harp to the electro acoustic harp and to the prototype of the MIDI harp, passing by the acousmonium… This was a concert which united two worlds which might never have met, the very ancient world of the harp, and the very current world of electro acoustics. It all begins with the Celtic harp… Amplified by adding a microphone, under the fingers of Séverine Levy it played a contemporary piece by Alexandre Levy with the revealing title “Field of Encounter”. Then followed the blue harp, a doubly ampli- fied pedal harp with a microphone for the harp and a microphone for each of its 47 strings, upon which Sandrine Chatron interpreted “Fall” by Kaija Saariaho, giving the audience a notion of the possibilities of treating the sound which this harp offers. Suddenly the stage was emptied, the lights went out and in complete darkness each member of the audience was plunged a little disconcertingly but quickly charmed, into a totally new world, that of music without an instrument. The harp was no longer, replaced by a computer with keyboards and buttons and wires, kilometres of wires… This was a leap into improbability: at the heart of the temple of the harp rose the electro acoustic sound of the acousmonium piloted by a musician of modern times, Sebastien Chatron, who interpreted an extract of “Flight”, a piece by Alexandre Levy which was composed for the Avignon Festival. After the confrontation of these two parallel worlds, that of the harp and that of the computer, came the moment of the fusion realised at the Blue Harp by Sandrine Chatron. In “Strings and Shadow”, a piece by the composer Ake Parmerud, each of the strings played by Sandrine Chatron opened onto another instrument, thrown into another universe of sound. It is a harp, but it is not a harp… Further yet into the projection, the harp itself became a computer, no longer a computer piloted by a keyboard but by the strings of a harp, a harp of the future, unique, the prototype of the MIDI harp fabricated by Camac Harps in collaboration with the American harp maker David Kortier. The evening came to a majestic end with the presentation of a world premiere, the overture and third scene of a chamber opera “The Circle” written by Alexandre Levy, which was interpreted by the soprano Sylvia Kevorkian and Séverine Levy – MIDI harp and amplified harp. A Sébastien Chatron et son acousmonium magic harp which became a gong, a crystal, a male voice choir… a veritable Aladdin’s lamp which, with the lightest touch, conjured a new object which resounded and vibrated in the memory of the sole character of this opera that is lost within the heart of an abandoned house. A dream evening which will foster dreams… MARTINE FLAISSIER’S BLUE HARP “I dreamt of a blue harp, so I made it…”. In 1991 in the Cassis Meetings, Joel Garnier presented the prototype of his Blue Harp. At the end of the conference, Martine Flaissier fleetingly heard this simple sentence which vividly inspired her curiosity: a blue harp? Impossible not to find out more… It was love at first sight with this modern, innovative, electric blue harp! This is the beginning of a fine story, that of the meeting between a harpist, Martine Flaissier, and her harp, the “Blue”. Enthusiastically sustained by the director of her music school, she invited Joel Garnier to come and present the blue harp within the school. She also contacted the DRAC (Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs) and immediately encountered support in the form of State commissions to composers as well as the organisation of concerts. Martine didn’t yet have a blue harp in her possession, but she knew right away what she was going to do with this magical instrument. Even before getting it, she imagined a trio with flutes and percussion, and dreamt of the necessity to create a specific contemporary musical repertoire. Mastering the “technical” side of this electroacoustic harp, equipped with 47 high fidelity microphones and linked to a special effects rack, didn’t intimidate her for one instant. She was so keen! She practised eight hours a day for almost a Trio Controverse year on her new blue Henry Vaudé, Martine Flaissier, Philippe Charneux. harp. In 1992, Martine Flaissier founded the Trio Controverse alongside Henry Vaudé and Philippe Charneux, assembling four flutes, an arsenal of percussion and the blue harp. This unique group based its originality and its identity on its choice of instruments and the repertoire interpreted. Since 1992, the Trio has audaciously championed an approach to the creation of original music by soliciting the great names of contemporary composition and the result constitutes a true revolution! The Trio Controverse is the sole interpreter of this totally original repertoire of French music which was created on its initiative and to whom it is especially dedicated. The almost unlimited acoustic range of the blue harp can be adapted to all styles of writing and present day composers find a strong source of inspiration in this Twenty First Century harp. Whenever possible, Martine Flaissier lent them her blue harp in order that they may work with it. Alain Louvier kept it for two months before composing “Four Landscapes”. From its inception Martine Flaissier’s Trio Controverse aroused the interest of institutions, composers, and the general public. The State commissions led to world premieres. Concerts followed one another: Radio France Festival, National Auditorium of Madrid, Art Association of the Napoule, French Institute of Barcelona, Zaal de Unies of Rotterdam, Presence Festival Paris 2004, “Music Today” Festival of Perpignan, Poulenc Auditorium, Paris… Their first compact disc, “Blue Harp” with the label Triton, reunites great names of contemporary composition: Alain Louvier, Vincent Paulet, Gracianne Finzi, JeanClaude Wolff and Thierry Escaich. Today the Trio Controverse is preparing new creations which will in turn become the object of a new compact disc, “but not right away!” says Martine Flaissier… design et la fabrication de matériel de concert pour les musiciens. Sitting on a hard surface with a 90-degree straight edge cuts off blood flow and oxygen and this creates numbness in the legs. The sciatic nerve is especially vulnerable to the sharp, front 90-degree edge of a hard bench. Prolonged compression results in nerve damage” This excerpt is from an article by an ergonomic engineer who discusses the medical problems that often result from ill-designed seating for harpists. The author also talks about the Concert Design Interval Harp Chair and the benefits it provides the harpist. (Read the entire article on the Concert Design web site). Musician’s body needs the finest support and comfort available for every performance and every hour of rehearsal to ensure good posture and relieve muscular tension, stress, sharp pain and permanent nerve damage. It creates a nice, sharp contrast with the harp.” Interval Harp Performance Chair of Concert Design can be seen at Camac Harps. Des concerts en Europe pendant l’été : voir www.alan-stivell.com ALAN STIVELL’S ELECTRIC HARP 4 It was quite some time after my meeting with Joel Garnier, of which I have an emotional recollection, that I felt the desire for a harp which would reunite several elements with which I had already experimented on with my stage harps, whilst bringing them the reliability of high technology. I then turned to Jakez François who replied favourably to my request, to my great pleasure. I had decided this time to give priority to the strings before designing and dreaming a beautiful harp form. I wanted a sound which, although different, would remind me of my very first harp. The “Merlin” harp is a childhood dream, an instrument appearing from the pages of a storybook, materialising in the midst of our world as if by the wave of a magic wand. The magical revival of this harp brings to life again the mythical harp of the king Brian Boru. Emerging from the deepest Irish legends, this harp plunges us with its music into a distant world of legends, that of Dagda, Tristan and Merlin. This is the sacred harp of druids and bards, the companion of gods, heroes and saints in antiquity as in the middle ages. This is the harp of Gwenc’hlan, Merlin’s last druid, and of Merlin himself, the inseparable companion which holds their confidences, their confessions, their curses and their prophecies. This is also the harp which attracts, fascinates and captivates, the instrument which connects the heavens with the earth. This is the instrument which Merlin, at the threshold of his life, took with him in his crystal ship heading for the Island of Eternal Youth, as only its sonority could yet console him. This is Merlin’s harp. This harp, like Merlin whose name it bears, is simultaneously a myth, a legend and a reality. Its form is a stylised interpretation of the forms of Brian Boru’s harp. The string gauging scrupulously recaptures that of traditional Irish harps, and particularly the spacing which is slightly closer than that of modern Celtic harps. But this harp which appears from the past is also a modern harp which benefits from all the technical progress made to this day by Camac Harp technicians. This is truly a harp of our time which is capable of reviving Celtic music in all its virtuosity. This is a legendary harp, a harp of living legends. The “AZILIZ” Celtic harp now exists in a brand new version which integrates the latest acoustic and aesthetic improvements which have been perfected during the past months in the workshops of Camac Harps. The old levers have been replaced by completely new Camac mechanisms. The former plastic levers are now moulded in metal and styled in the shape of oboe keys which are easier to manage. As for the mechanism, it has proven its remarkable reliability through long months of tests. The addition of a new soundbox greatly contributes to the acoustic improvement of this new version of the “AZILIZ” harp, whose appearance has also been enriched by a touch of refinement as it now bears the name “AZILIZ” encrusted in a medallion with a Celtic motif which is handmade by a Breton artist. And to reply to all those who are still asking themselves, Aziliz means Cecilia in Breton, Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians… With a prestigious harp comes a prestigious name: the “STIVELL” harp is a Celtic concert harp, which holds a remarkable lineage, that of the famous electric harp of the celebrated Breton harpist Alan Stivell whose name it bears. Camac Harps have today created an acoustic version of this unique and fantastic harp. This harp’s aesthetic style comes directly from the forms that Alan Stivell drew himself for his own harp. Made from traditional woods such as maple and spruce, this harp is also available in rarer woods such as kevazingo or zebrano. Each “STIVELL” harp bears the name “Stivell” inscribed on a medallion, a unique piece cut and hand-finished by a Breton artist. The care in working the wood and the quality of the finishing is the outcome of all the experience acquired by the master artisans of Camac Harps during the long years of making Celtic harps. The “STIVELL” harp has been specially endowed with a double soundboard: the principal soundboard is doubled with a soundboard reinforcement in the bass, a sort of second soundboard which increases the quantity of wood made to vibrate by the bass strings without increasing the volume of these strings thus obtaining a greater richness of timbre and a perfect balance throughout its range. A sort of reply to the paradox of the harp where very opposing registers of tension rub shoulders. The “STIVELL” harp is without doubt a superb concert instrument, combining purity of shape, preciousness of materials, finishing of prestigious and high technical nature, as well as being a production befitting of a memorable anniversary: the Fiftieth birthday of the Renaissance of the Celtic Harp. graphic which permitted us to achieve this desire whilst integrating some of my other demands, such as easier access within the upper octaves, more bass notes (in quantity and strength) and a similar tension to that of classic harps. As with my previous harps, I wanted the strings to pass in the middle of the console – as in South America – and that the harp could be tuned with guitar and electric bass keys. Thus it was necessary to reinvent mechanisms and levers which look more like switches and which provide bends and vibratos. As for the general form of the harp, it was to be more triangular without losing the curves so dear to the Celts. The modernity of its appearance had to be in harmony with the modernity of the project. Finally, I particularly wanted to prioritise the use of aluminium. My wish list, although very demanding, was respected in great detail by all the Camac team who showed an unshakeable goodwill to succeed. Jakez and his technicians brought forth numerous ideas in order to complete, improve and perfect the project and its realisation. The result is beyond all my dreams. The sound is fantastic, from the point of view of finesse and strength. The strings, under great tension, remain perfectly in tune for two hours in temperatures of thirty degrees Celsius, which is unique. The finishes of the anodised aluminium and of the wood are worthy of the finest instrument-makers. Through their love of a job well done, their talent and their humanity, the members of the Camac Harps team, from conception through to production, have given me the desire to play the most beautiful music, and more so they have given me an unforgettable human experience. When Jakez offered that I launch a new model of harp which, whilst taking inspiration from the design of this electric harp, would be purely acoustic and made from wood with gut strings, I liked the idea very much, and it was very flattering since the name chosen was…”Stivell”. I hope that the “Stivell” will move a new generation of harpists towards the founding of the enchantment which has been mine throughout my life from the moment that I received the “telenn” (“harp” in Breton language) that my father had made. Thanks again to Jakez and his team. Enrico Tartarotti. AN ATLANTIDE PRESTIGE AT THE FENICE Venice is a city unlike any other in the world and the “Fenice” makes it even more unique. After the terrible fire that completely destroyed this magnificent theatre, the hope of seeing it occupy the foreground place in the bosom of the panorama of the music world that it had before, seemed to be lost for ever. But it is with the highest professionalism and in a very short time that a team of specialists took up the challenge to identically re-create this irreplaceable pearl. However the city of Venice, which had already faced up to unimaginable expenditures, found itself totally penniless when the time came to acquire any instruments. This is why, in November 2004 the city’s administration addressed a request to harp makers and to their dealers to rent harps in order to be able to perform Massenet’s opera “Le roi de Lahore”, which was scheduled by the Fenice from December 4th 2004 to January 5th 2005.Aware of the importance of supporting the theatre and its artistic efforts, Camac Italia, helped with a generous offer by Camac Harps in France, proposed to provide two harps for this show for free. Thus two splendid “Atlantide Prestige” harps left Camac’s workshop in Mouzeil for Como where Camac Italia is based. Then they went on with their route aboard the Camac Voyager, a van especially designed by Camac Italia for harp transport and assistance. Zebrano et Palissandre RARE WOODS FOR A PRECIOUS HARP : THE ATLANTIDE PRESTIGE The Atlantide Prestige will from now on be endowed with the rarest and most precious species of wood. These are tropical and faraway species, bringing with them the intoxicating exotic perfumes of the Indies, Africa and South America. These fabulously named woods in deep, warm colours of a surprising variety, have transformed the Atlantide Prestige into a unique art object with an unparalleled appearance. The colour palette, the veining and the designs that these woods offer is staggering. Palissandre of Santos, the Pau Ferro, grows in the forests of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It is a hard wood, brown to red, veined with black and violet. Kevazingo - a rare but powerful tree which proudly grows up to twenty metres high in the heart of the forests of Gabon where it is also called Ebana. In Cameroon it is called Bubinga, Lianu in the Congo, Oveng in Equatorial Guinea… Its wood is pale pink or a reddish brown, finely veined with violet-red or with black, often moiré, sometimes dappled, with an occasionally undulating grain. Zebrano - this tree’s bole can be as high as twenty metres, and it is also a rare African species. Otherwise known as Zingana, it originates from Cameroon, Gabon or Guinea. It is a wood with a yellow foundation, striped with marked dark brown veins, and it has a zebra pattern. For Jakez François, President of Camac Harps, it is the outcome of a ten year dream. For a decade he has carried with him this dream of a harp carved from rare and precious woods of an exceptional quality, woods such as palissandre, kevazingo and zebrano, which are all highly valued for fine cabinet making and marquetry, and particularly sought after for the fabrication of luxury items such as cutlery, brush making, and of course instrument making! Today it is a reality. This precious rough timber stripped of its bark, cut up into planks and stacked into batches, imported from distant regions, has been drying for a number of years in the factory at Mouzeil. Lovingly supervised and conserved in anticipation of the day it will reach maturity, this timber has at last been worked in order to decorate these sumptuous, exceptional harps with its marvellous grain. Long years of patience have at last been rewarded as the first Atlantide Prestige harps to be created using these superb species have now emerged from the workshops of Camac Harps, ready to be proudly presented at the World Harp Congress in Dublin in July. These are genuine works of art, original and unique, just waiting to be discovered! Percussions : Jean-Marie Denquin. Harpes : Anne Mispelter, Aurélie Barbé, Vincent Buffin, Marjorie Harter, Rébecca Feron, Caroline Colombel. Contrebasse : Nicolas Marty. “Naccara” … orange shaded red hue of Rubens, two timpani Moroccan percussion, “Naccara” is a name that sounds.“Naccara” is the name chosen by a group of young musicians forming to a harp ensemble sextet, plus a bass and world percussions. As luck would have it they meet in 1999 during a training course with Bernard Andrès: they are six harpists and they have available pieces for six harps… The idea of forming a harp sextet is their own. Now, they grow in number with the addition of a bass, then with percussion. In 2001 they needed a name. They became “Naccara”. For one year they worked and gave concerts conducted by Bernard Andrès, who was then followed until the end of 2003 by different conductors. They then decided to work without the support of any “external ear” in order to force themselves to hear each other and to give rise to a real dialogue.“Naccara” is not an orchestra, it’s a group. The group is united by the determination for a very original human and musical adventure. It is not only a question of playing together, but it is also about inventing a new repertoire in which each personality has a share, each sensibility express itself, and each instrument has a say in the matter. They work together to form their own identity, an intermixed identity that acquires its form little by little through curiosity, listening and respect. This delicate and demanding work is key to their success. The group turns out to be greatly united by years of personal commitment and mutual investment facing the difficulties raised by this adventure and finding a place suited to accommodate all of them to compose and to rehearse, making themselves available, meeting the requirements of the group life during the time needed for rehearsal or for a series of concerts, finding the place of each within the group while accepting the inevitable tradeoffs… a long journey towards maturity. “Naccara” offers today a rich and wide repertoire encompassing classical pieces by Saint-Saëns, Albeniz, Debussy, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Ravel, creations of Ivan Bellocq, Vincent Michel, Aurélie Barbé, Vincent Buffin, and of course, jazz tunes and music from Brazil, Cuba, Nicaragua… This is a unique, colourful cocktail, a sound kaleidoscopic that makes the harps swing, that frees the harp from its iron collar and that attracts a new public, surprised and charmed by discovering all the facets offered by this instrument. This year, “Naccara” opened the 11th Harp Festival in Avesnois, and appeared in Sentier des Halles in Paris, for a series of concerts from the end of February to the end of April. Here was the opportunity to discover this unique group, the originality of his repertoire and the energy that emanates from those young artists full of humour and radiant with joy on stage. The audience didn’t make any mistake about it since every Naccara’s concerts had a full house. A very promising start for this forward-looking group brimful of projects: a CD is ready to be recorded this summer, a musical show is waiting for a director… 286 strings to be followed! Then they continued their fabulous journey along the streets and canals of Venice to finally reach the prestigious stage of the Fenice. Our mission accomplished, we went back to Como, ready to return, after the last show, to take the harps back. For New Year’s Day, to our great surprise, the largest Italian TV channel was broadcasting the New Year’s Day concert live from the Fenice in Venice instead of the traditional concert by the Berlin Philharmonic. Another surprise during the entire broadcast, one of our “Atlantide Prestige” harps was constantly in the field of the cameras, revealing its clear and fascinating sound through the screen.Yet another surprise was when we called the director of the theatre to thank him for this fruitful collaboration, we heard that the musicians were fascinated by our harps and wished to keep at least one of them, the “Atlantide” with the natural colour that had been admired so much during this concert. Having the opportunity to collaborate with the Fenice is a great source of pride and joy for Camac Harps and Camac Italia, since this theatre wrote the story of music and always hosted the greatest musicians as well as the greatest conductors. It is also a great joy for a craftsman, a harp maker, to see one of his instruments being played on the stage of the Fenice. Enrico Tartarotti. “Arabesque, A journey into Harp Artistry”, is the latest album recording by Isabelle Perrin with the Northwest Sinfonietta of Tacoma, USA, conducted by Christophe Chagnard. A real journey that leads us from “La Source” by Hasselmans to the “Danses sacrée et profane” by Debussy by way of the “Aria and Rondo Pastoral” by Mozart, the “Prélude” (op. 28 N° 15) by Chopin, “Flowing Stream”, a Chinese traditional piece, without forgetting “Serenade” by Parish Alvars, “Chanson dans la nuit” by Salzedo and many more besides. This is a journey to discover the richness of the harp’s repertoire, a rare journey proposed by one of our greatest soloists, a journey not to be missed! “The idea behind this recording project was inspired by the encounter of Christophe Chagnard, conductor, with whom I had the opportunity to work at the Sixth World Harp Congress in the USA, Winston Ma, producer, and myself. Our deep common musical understanding ant the notorious difficulty of recording such a tonally complex instrument as the harp set the stage to take on what we perceived as a great challenge. My choice of repertory was meant to be as eclectic as possible, as much in various styles and time periods as in the distinct character of the different compositions, thus reflecting what could be featured at one of my recitals. Some famous pieces (often conceived initially for the piano and beautifully adapted for the harp) as well as lesser-known selections were assembled to provide the widest possible perspective on this magical instrument, and for each number to further enhance our love of it. It’s my hope that my choices and preferences will provide the listeners with a glimpse of the immense pleasure I had in recording this album - Isabelle Perrin ”. 7 Les Harpes Camac, partenaire privilégié des Festivals et Académies de Harpe Camac Harps, partner of Harp Festivals and Academies LES ACADEMIES ACADEMIES ACADEMIE DE HARPE DE FOUGERES, FRANCE Du 11 au 22 juillet 2005 avec Ghislaine Petit-Volta Renseignements : Ecole de Musique du Pays de Fougères “Les Urbanistes” -
