How To Best Use À Moi Paris 2
A sequel to the beginner novel À Moi Paris – une histoire au présent, I wrote “À Moi Paris 2” especially to
address the needs of intermediate students, and boost your French to the next level.
À Moi Paris 2 consists of 3 parts :
1. The French novel – French text with matching audio
2. The English translation of the novel
3. The study guide – French vocabulary, slang expressions and idioms, English translations and notes
Each chapter evolves around an every day use vocabulary theme like “in a restaurant”, “directions”, “colloquial French”, “on the phone”, “cooking” etc... The vocabulary related to this theme is underlined in the novel,
allowing you to study lists of words in their rightful context.
Theme specific vocabulary, slang expressions and idioms that I believed would be challenging for an intermediate student are in bold in the novel. They are listed in the Study Guide, translated into English, with
additional notes to help you outwit the difficulties of French.
Improve your understanding – don’t read, listen, listen, listen
Listen to a chapter of the story once, without reading the text, and see how much you understand. If a whole
chapter is too long, cut it in several study paragraphs. Study the vocabulary and expressions of the accompanying study guide. Then listen to the story one more time. If you don’t get it, read the French transcript
as you are listening to the audio, and check with the translation: why didn’t you get it? Was it because you
didn’t know the word, or because you didn’t understand the pronunciation?
Improve your pronunciation – repeat out loud
The whole story is recorded slow enough so that you can easily pause between each sentences. So pause and
repeat, if possible without reading the text. Do that a couple of times, then read the text out loud while playing the audio at a low volume: compare your pronunciation to mine. Make sure you mimic the sounds, but
also the rhythm and the intonation, and pay a particular attention to the glidings and silent letters.
Improve your speaking abilities
Learning new vocabulary in its context is much more effective than learning lists. Repeating out loud parts
of the novel will help your brain come up with the right word when you are in a similar situation: and since
the novel recreates everyday life interactions, it’s quite likely that this vocabulary is going to come quite
handy. Creating your own sentence with the new vocabulary is even better for your memory, so I encourage
you to make your own dialogues using the theme specific vocabulary which is conveniently underlined in the
novel.
Good luck with your studies, and remember, repetition is the key.

Chapitre 1 : Invitations Par Téléphone
Mary, une jeune anglaise, est venue passer un semestre à Paris pour ses études. Elle est dans le salon de sa collocation avec ses deux amies, Sophie et Claudia. Claudia est italienne, elle aussi est venue étudier à Paris. Sophie
est française, et elle étudie dans la même université que ses deux colocataires, l’université Dauphine.
Mary vient de téléphoner à ses parents pour obtenir leur permission de continuer ses études à Paris, où son petit
copain, le beau Patrick, étudie également. Ses parents ont accepté, et Mary savoure sa victoire avec ses deux
amies.
Sophie
Alors ça y est ? C’est sûr maintenant ? Tu restes ?
Mary
Ben, je pense que oui. Mes parents sont d’accord pour que je continue mes études à Paris. Grace
à Claudia, j’ai un petit boulot au resto où elle travaille aussi, et qui va payer une partie du loyer ; et
pour le reste, ma grand-mère et mes parents vont m’aider.
Claudia
Tes parents n’étaient pas trop surpris ?
Mary
Tu sais, je crois qu’ils s’y attendaient un peu. Je pense qu’ils n’étaient pas particulièrement étonnés.
Sophie
En tous cas, c’est vraiment génial que tu restes. Il faut fêter ça !
Claudia
Excellente idée ! Moi, je suis toujours partante pour une fête !
Mary
Attendez un peu, que je reprenne mes esprits... Il faut que j’appelle Patrick et ma grand-mère pour
leur annoncer ça.
Sophie
Bien sûr, on va te laisser, et de notre côté, penser à la meilleure façon de fêter l’évènement.
Mary reprend le téléphone et appelle Patrick.
Mary
Allo Patrick ? Ça y est, j’ai téléphoné à mes parents, et ils sont d’accord !
Patrick
C’est génial !! Ça n’a pas été trop difficile ?
Mary
Non, pas du tout.
Patrick
Bon, tu vois, il ne fallait pas t’inquiéter.
Sophie
Oui, mais ça s’est vraiment bien passé : ils ont dit qu’ils viendraient me voir à Paris.
Patrick
Comme ça, je vais pouvoir enfin les rencontrer !
Mary
Ben oui, ça me ferait plaisir.
Patrick
À moi aussi. Alors, il faut fêter ton succès.
Mary
C’est exactement ce que pensent Claudia et Sophie !
Patrick
Tu vois, les grands esprits se rencontrent ! On fait ça demain ?
Mary
Demain, c’est Samedi. On a rien de prévu... Bon, eh bien super, je vous laisse tout organiser alors ?
Patrick
Oui, tu veux aller quelque part en particulier ?
Mary
Non, non, je vous laisse choisir. On se voit plus tard ?

Oui, je passe toujours te chercher à 7 heures ?
Mary
Parfait. À tout à l’heure mon Doudou. Je t’aime.
Patrick
Moi aussi. Bisous my Love.
Mary

Mary raccroche, puis elle va chercher son mobile pour téléphoner à sa grand-mère qui habite à Brighton en Angleterre, et qui est très proche de sa petite-fille. Les filles (c’est à dire Mary, Sophie et Claudia) n’utilisent le téléphone
fixe que pour téléphoner en France, car elles partagent entre elles la facture de la ligne fixe.
Mary compose le numéro de sa grand-mère, Le téléphone sonne, et madame Joe décroche.
Mme Joe
Allo ?
Mary
Allo Mamie, bonjour, c’est Mary.
Mme Joe
Bonjour ma chérie, alors, comment s’est passé ton coup de téléphone ?
Mary
Ils ont dit oui !!!!
Mme Joe
Ah ! Quel bonheur ! Tu vois, j’avais raison, j’étais sûre qu’avec les bons arguments, il n’y aurait pas
de problème.
Mary
Tu ne peux pas savoir comme je suis soulagée, et heureuse. Je vais pouvoir continuer mes études,
rester avec Patrick et mes amies. Oh la la, comme je suis contente !
Mme Joe
Et moi je suis ravie pour toi. Et n’oublie pas que je t’ai proposé de t’aider. Si tu as besoin d’argent,
ou de quoi que ce soit, tu peux compter sur moi.
Mary
Je sais Mamie, tu es vraiment adorable.
Mme Joe
Bon, eh bien écoute, sur ces bonnes nouvelles, je dois te quitter parce que je pars jouer au bridge
dans 10 minutes, et tu me connais, comme d’habitude, je ne suis pas prête...
Mary
D’accord, je te laisse aller te préparer. Au revoir ma mamie chérie.
Mme Joe
Au revoir ma petite chérie. Mes amitiés à Patrick et à tes amies.
Mary

Écoute... non... je vais demander à Claudia s’il y a un quelqu’un du resto où Mary et elle travaillent

Moi, j’en connais un chouette avenue des Ternes, j’y suis déjà allé avec des amis, et c’est très sympa.
Ça s’appelle le James Joyce. Et il me semble qu’ils ont une salle en haut pour dîner et qu’ils acceptent les réservations.
Sophie
Cool ! Tu veux bien t’occuper d’appeler Eric et Grégoire ? Moi j’appelle les filles, et Claudia
appellera Rosa. Et puis, ça t’embêterait de faire la réservation ?
Patrick
Non, pas du tout. Pour quelle heure ?

Super ! De toutes façons, je te vois ce soir : je passe prendre Mary à 7 heures, on va dîner chez

Mary, a young English woman has come to spend a semester in Paris for her studies. She is in the living room of
her shared apartment with her two friends, Sophie and Claudia. Claudia is Italian, she has also come to study in
Paris. Sophie is French, and she studies at the same university as her two roommates, Dauphine University.
Mary just called her parents to obtain their permission to continue her studies in Paris, where her boyfriend, the
handsome Patrick studies as well. Her parents accepted, and Mary is enjoying her victory with her two friends.
Sophie
So this is it? It is on now? You are staying?
Mary
Well, I think so. My parents agreed that I continue my studies in Paris. Thanks to Claudia, I have
a student job at the restaurant where she also works, which will pay part of the rent; and for the
rest, my grandmother and my parents will help me.
Claudia
Your parents were not too surprised?
Mary
You know, I think they were expecting it a bit. I think they were not particularly surprised.
Sophie
In any case, it is really fantastic that you are staying. We must celebrate!
Claudia
Excellent idea! I am always ready for a party!
Mary
Wait a bit for me to regain my senses… I must call Patrick and my grandmother to tell them.
Sophie
Of course. We will let you and as for us we will think of the best way to celebrate the event.
Mary picked up the telephone again to call Patrick.

Hello Patrick? That is it, I called my parents, and they agreed!
Mary

Patrick

Mary dials the number of her grandmother, the telephone rings, and Madam Joe answers.
