PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - AC AJACCIO
Olympique de Marseille - AC Ajaccio Feature Preview
Olympique de Marseille open Week 32 hoping to bring a smile to their fans' faces after a difficult few weeks, though bottom side AC
Ajaccio will not present the easy fodder they appear to do on paper.
Winless in five, OM have seen their ambitions of reappearing in the Champions League next season all but disappear, and even
snatching a top-four finish, and with it earning Europa League football, has also faded to a distant speck on the horizon. Things would
have been worse had Nicolas Nkoulou not headed home in the dying seconds to secure a barely deserved point against FC
Sochaux-Montbéliard last weekend.
However, coupled with other results going for teams above them, OM now find themselves nine points adrift of AS Saint-Etienne in
fourth, and a further three behind third-placed LOSC Lille, which - with just seven games left - appears an insurmountable obstacle.
"Even if we finish fifth, it will have been a mediocre season," admitted Albert Emon, brought into the backroom set-up by sporting
director-cum-first-team-coach José Anigo in a bid to buck up results. "We have up-and-down results. The quality of play is mediocre.
I'm disappointed about that. Now, we mustn't ask ourselves too many more questions. In terms of the squad, we have to take risks.
We don't score enough goals. Our content has to improve. The staff have to give more. Personally, I haven't managed to give what I
owed José Anigo."
With results going awry and the club's demanding fans increasingly restless, Anigo's position in the dug-out has been the focus of
intense scrutiny. After stepping in to take over from Elie Baup in December, Anigo has been able to blend a seemingly disparate
squad into something resembling the effectively functioning unit that finished runners-up under his predecessor last season. Media
speculation suggested Anigo even wished to end his association with the club he has become so strongly identified with, an issue he
swept aside following the game at Sochaux. "My future isn't the most important thing," said Anigo, who first joined OM as a teenage
defender in 1975. "The aim is to go out and get points, to do better and show a different face. I'm going to finish these matches and I'll
be here next season."
After succeeding Fabrizio Ravanelli in similar circumstances to his counterpart Anigo, Christian Bracconi will also likely be at the helm
of the Corsican club next season. A recent upturn in fortunes may not be enough for Bracconi to save the side from relegation with a
yawning 15-point gap between themselves and safety. However, though they have only won once in their last four league outings,
they have also only suffered one defeat, leaving them in their best form of the campaign; a fact confirmed by last weekend's 2-2 draw
with Toulouse.
"I knew it could not be 0-0," said Bracconi, who would have been celebrating a fourth league victory of the campaign had his team
held on to their 2-0 lead. "We took a 2-0 lead somewhat against the run of play, but there was too much space between the lines. In
the second half we tried to squeeze and reduce the gaps. Unfortunately we gifted them the second goal after a succession of
individual errors."

Week 32
Olympique de Marseille - AC Ajaccio
- HISTORY: Olympique de Marseille have won eight of the 12 L1 games between the pair at the Stade Vélodrome.
- AC Ajaccio have won just once on the south coast, a 2-1 victory in April 2005. Yohan Demont (24') and Edson Marcelo de Faria (52')
scored for the visitors with Habib Beye replying (58'). Current Ajaccio midfielder Benoît Pedretti started the game for OM.
- OM are unbeaten in their last three home games against Ajaccio, but have won just one of those, a 2-0 triumph in October 2011 that
came courtesy of an André Ayew brace (30', 49').
- LAST SEASON: The pair played out a goalless draw in Marseille in Week 29. Both Ayew brothers, André (55') and Jordan (87'),
struck as OM won 2-0 win Week 11.
- THIS SEASON: Dimitri Payet (27'), André-Pierre Gignac (39') and Florian Thauvin (58') scored for OM as they won 3-1 in Corsica on
22 November; Grenddy Perozo had equalised for the hosts (31').
- OLD BOYS: Pedretti spent a single season at the Stade Vélodrome, making 31 L1 appearances (3 goals) during the 2004-05
campaign before joining Olympique Lyonnais.
- Ronald Zubar made 72 top-flight appearances (2 goals) for OM between 2006 and 2009 when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers
in England.
- Laurent Bonnart made 31 appearances in OM's L1 title-winning campaign of 2009-10, his final season at the club having played 66
times in the previous two seasons after his move from Le Mans FC. He joined AS Monaco FC in summer 2010.
- Current OM assistant coach Albert Emon steered Ajaccio to safety last season after taking over from Alex Dupont before leaving the
club in the summer.
- OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE
- GENERAL: Marseille come into Week 31 in sixth place in Ligue 1 with 45 points from 31 games. They have won 12, drawn nine and
lost ten of their games to date and trail Saint-Etienne in fourth by nine points and Lille in third by 12 points. They also sit just one point
above Reims in seventh.
- Coming into the weekend, Marseille had not been lower than sixth all season, or indeed since the start of last season. They were top
of the table after winning at Valenciennes FC in Week 3 and had been fifth throughout 2014 until dropping to sixth after Week 28.
- In their last outing, José Anigo's side drew 1-1 at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard last time out. Nicolas Nkoulou (90') salvaged a point for
OM after Stoppila Sunzu's 25th-minute opener.
- OM have won just once in seven, and are winless in their last five, picking up just two points in that time. They have won four, drawn
six and lost four of 14 Ligue 1 matches since Élie Baup was sacked and replaced by José Anigo.
- They are 10th in the form table over that period, collecting 18 points. They had previously gathered 27 points in 17 matches under
Baup.
- Marseille have the fifth-best attack in Ligue 1, with 40 goals scored. Only Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Lyon and Saint-Etienne
have scored more. They have scored three goals in wins at Guingamp and Ajaccio as well as at home to SC Bastia. They have failed
to score at all in eight games, including in back-to-back losses in Week 27 to PSG (2-0 A) and Week 28 to Nice (1-0 H) and three of
their last four.
- André-Pierre Gignac is OM's leading scorer with 13 league goals, followed by Dimitri Payet with seven and Florian Thauvin with six.
Nobody else has scored more than twice.
- Gignac has 19 goals in all competitions and has netted 13 times in his last 15 games in all competitions. He has 78 in total in his
career in Ligue 1. Thauvin has eight in all competitions. Of Marseille's last 26 goals, 19 have been scored by Gignac, Thauvin and
Payet.
- Payet's total of seven league goals this season is already the third-highest tally of his career. Six of his seven goals have been
scored in the opening half-hour of games. Four of his goals have opened the scoring. He has scored 48 Ligue 1 goals altogether in
his career.

Week 32
Olympique de Marseille - AC Ajaccio
- Mathieu Valbuena has provided five assists, while Thauvin has laid on three goals.
- Marseille have conceded 33 goals, giving them the joint-sixth-best defensive record (with FC Nantes) coming into the weekend.
They have kept seven clean sheets. The 3-2 home defeat to Reims (Wk 11) is the only Ligue 1 game in which they have conceded
more than twice.
- Indeed, that is the only time Marseille have conceded more than twice in any of their last 48 Ligue 1 games since a 3-1 defeat at
Sochaux on January 13 last year.
- Steve Mandanda is the only Marseille player to have started every league game. Nkoulou has started 30 of the 31 matches and
Alaixys Romao has started 29 times. Payet (26 starts/3 substitute appearances) has also appeared in 29 matches.
- Saber Khalifa has made 22 of his 24 Ligue 1 appearances this season from the bench. Giannelli Imbula has come off the bench 13
times.
- Coming into the weekend, Marseille and Monaco are the only clubs in Ligue 1 yet to have a player sent off.
- Gennaro Bracigliano has made 150 Ligue 1 appearances although he has never played a league game for OM since signing from
Nancy in 2011.
- Steve Mandanda made his 250th Ligue 1 appearance against Nice in Week 28. He has played in 145 consecutive Ligue 1 games
since missing the final day of the 2009-10 season due to suspension.
- HOME FORM: OM are 10th in the home form table with 23 points from 15 games (7W 2D 6L).
- OM have beaten Evian-Thonon-Gaillard (2-0, Wk 2), AS Saint-Etienne (2-1, Wk 7), Sochaux (2-1, Wk 13), Montpellier (2-0, Wk 15),
Valenciennes (2-1, Wk 21), SC Bastia (3-0, Wk 24) and Lorient (1-0, Wk 26).
- They have lost to AS Monaco (1-2, Wk 4), Paris Saint-Germain (1-2, Wk 9), Reims (2-3, Wk 11), Nantes (0-1, Wk 17), Nice (0-1,
Wk28) and Rennes (0-1, Wk30).
- The Nice loss was Anigo's first since taking over from Baup after five home games unbeaten under the new man in charge.
However, they have now lost their last two home games.
- After scoring the opening goal at home, their record reads: 7W 1D 2L. When they concede the opening goal, their record is: 0W 1D
4L.
- OM had the second-best home record in Ligue 1 last season behind champions PSG, winning 12, drawing four and losing three of
their 19 games at the Vélodrome. They did not lose any of their last eight home games last season.
- Their average attendance at home so far this season is 38,277. Their highest gate so far is 44,995 against Monaco while a low of
34,626 watched them draw with Toulouse. Their average gate for the whole of last season was 33,473 although stadium capacity has
increased since then.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: Marseille beat Reims 2-0 after extra-time at home in the Round of 64 but were eliminated at the next hurdle,
losing 5-4 at home to OGC Nice.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: OM beat Toulouse in the Round of 16 before losing 2-1 away to Lyon in the quarter-finals in January.
- CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Marseille became the first French club since the current format was introduced in 2003 to fail to register a
single point in the group stage of the Champions League as they finished bottom of Group F behind Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and
Napoli.
- JANUARY TRANSFERS IN: Brice Dja Djédjé from Evian-Thonon-Gaillard.
- OUT: Kassim Abdallah to Evian-Thonon-Gaillard, Jordan Ayew on loan to FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.
- TEAM NEWS: Anigo has a full-strength squad available.
- AC AJACCIO
- GENERAL: Ajaccio came into Week 32 bottom of the table with just 19 points from 31 games. They have won three, drawn ten and
lost 18 of their matches to date and lie 15 points adrift of safety.

Week 32
Olympique de Marseille - AC Ajaccio
- Ajaccio have not been higher than 13th this season and have spent 17 weeks in the relegation zone. They have been in the bottom
three since a 2-1 defeat at Guingamp in late October and have propped up the table since a 4-1 loss at Reims in their last game
before Christmas.
- In their last outing, Christian Bracconi's side threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Toulouse FC. Ricardo Faty (4') and
Gadji Tallo (34') gave the hosts a comfortable lead before Issiaga Sylla (37') and Wissam ben Yedder (60') struck to earn the
south-westerners a point.
- It was Ajaccio's second game unbeaten, however, (1W 1D).
- Ajaccio are currently in their best form of the season with five points from a possible 12 (1W 2D 1L).
- They have won two, drawn six and lost 11 of their league games since Bracconi, replaced Fabrizio Ravanelli as coach, taking just 12
points from 19 games. Under Ravanelli, they took seven points from 12 games.
- The ACA have managed just four wins in 41 Ligue 1 games since the middle of March last year, and just five wins in 45.
- The Corsicans have scored just 30 goals this season, the 15th-best tally (with Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC). They have failed to score
at all in ten games, while the 3-1 home win against Stade Rennais on February 8 and the 3-2 win at Valenciennes FC on 22 March
are the only matches in which they have netted more than twice.
- Tallo has a team-high five league goals while Benjamin André has struck four times.
- Ajaccio have conceded 57 goals, the most of any L1 team.
- They have kept two clean sheets - in consecutive goalless draws in August - and have conceded three or more goals on eight
occasions, including the 4-0 hammering at Bordeaux on December 1.
- No Ajaccio player has appeared in every game this season. Guillermo Ochoa and André have both featured 30 times.
- Ajaccio have picked up four red cards this season: Benjamin André (v Saint-Etienne, Wk 1), Claude Gonçalves (v Montpellier, Wk
8), Joshua Nadeau (v SC Bastia, Wk 16), Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi (v Monaco, Wk 17).
- Guillermo Ochoa made his 100th Ligue 1 appearance in the defeat at Montpellier on 22 February.
- AWAY FORM: Only FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (3 points) have picked up fewer points on their travels than Ajaccio this season (8
points, 1W 5D 9L).
- Only OGC Nice (7) and Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC (10) have scored fewer away goals than Ajaccio this season (11).
- Ajaccio are unbeaten in their last two outings (1W 1D); they had gone 27 away games without a victory (13D 14L) between their 4-2
win at Toulouse on 10 November 2012 and their 3-2 win at Valenciennes FC in Week 30 this season.
- Last season, they picked up 16 points away from home, the 14th-best tally.
- André has scored a team-high two goals away from home.
- After going 1-0 up away, Ajaccio's record is: 0W 3D 1L. When they have conceded the opening goal, their record reads: 1W 1D 8L.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: The Corsicans won 2-1 away to amateur side Quimperlé in Brittany in the round of 64 before being beaten
2-0 at home by SM Caen of Ligue 2 in the round of 32.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Ajaccio were eliminated at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 to island rivals SC Bastia in the Round of 32 in October
in a game played on neutral territory in Martigues.
- JANUARY TRANSFERS IN: None.
- OUT: Adrian Mutu to Petrolul Ploiesti (ROM) - free transfer, Chahir Belghazouani to Royal White Star (BEL) - free transfer, Eduardo
to FC Metz - free transfer, Salim Arrache to Chengdu Tiancheng (CHN) - free transfer, Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi to San José
Earthquakes (USA), Stefan Popescu - released, Brandon Deville on loan to Westerlo (BEL), Alessandro Crescenzi - returned to AS
Roma after loan.

Week 32
Olympique de Marseille - AC Ajaccio
LOSC Lille in early March.
Olympique de Marseille
- Founded in 1899, Marseille have been crowned Ligue 1 champions nine times (1937, '48, '71, '72, '89, '90, '91, '92, 2010) - second
only to Saint-Etienne, who have ten L1 titles. OM also have a record ten Coupes de France (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76
and '89) and a record-equalling (with PSG and Bordeaux) three Coupes de la Ligue (2010, '11, '12).
- Marseille are the only French club to have won the Champions League (1993), Basile Boli scoring the only goal of a 1-0 win over AC
Milan. OM were runners-up in 1991, losing 5-3 on penalties (0-0 a.e.t.) to Red Star Belgrade, as well as reaching the final of the
UEFA CUP in 1999 and 2004.
- OM's home stadium is the Stade Vélodrome. Renovations currently under way in preparation for hosting matches in Euro 2016 will
see capacity rise from 48,000 to 67,000.
- Sporting director José Anigo was asked to take over as coach on an interim basis following the sacking of Élie Baup on December 7,
2013. Former Saint-Etienne, Nantes, Toulouse and Bordeaux coach Baup had been in charge since July 2012.
- Anigo was born in Marseille and played for OM. He has taken charge of the team on several occasions in the past, including in 2004
when he oversaw the side's run to the final of the UEFA Cup, where they lost to Valencia.
- OM finished second last season, nine points behind champions PSG, clinching a place in the Champions League group stage. They
failed to progress from the group stage of the Europa League last season. 2-0 losses to arch-rivals PSG saw OM crash out in the
round of 16 of both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France.
- OM were stripped of the Ligue 1 title in 1993, after being found guilty of match-fixing.
- Notable former OM players include Franck Ribéry, Chris Waddle, Jean-Pierre Papin, Didier Drogba, Fabien Barthez, Laurent Blanc,
Alen Boksic, Jean Tigana, Eric Cantona, Didier Deschamps, Robert Pirès, Samir Nasri and Enzo Francescoli.
AC Ajaccio
- The Athletic Club Ajaccio was founded in 1910, but will play only its 13th Ligue 1 season during the 2013-14 campaign.
- The club's sixth-place finish at the end of the 1970-71 season is its best top-flight performance to date.
- After picking up just two points from their final four matches of the season, Ajaccio finished the 2012-13 season 17th, two points
above the drop zone. The club had sustained a three-point penalty (with one point suspended) at the start of the campaign following
crowd violence late in the previous season.
- The Stade François-Coty (capacity 12,000) has been the club's home since 1968. A number of improvements have been made
since 1992 and most notably since 2007 to bring the stadium up to L1 standards. However, the original pitch was only changed in
2012.
- Christian Bracconi was put in temporary charge of the first team until the 2013/14 winter break at least after Fabrizio Ravanelli was
sacked in early November 2013. Bracconi was promoted from his position as director of the club's youth academy. A former striker,
he notably played for FC Metz, with whom he won the Coupe de France in 1988.
- Ravanelli was relieved of his duties as first team coach after the Week 12 loss at home to Valenciennes FC in early November 2013.
He had been given his first senior coaching role only the previous summer when he stepped in after Albert Emon, who had
succeeded Alex Dupont midway through the 2012-13 season, stepped down. A Champions League, UEFA Cup and Serie A winner in
a glittering playing career as a striker with Juventus, Olympique de Marseille and Lazio among others, Ravanelli was capped 21 times
