A Tribute to Majie Padberg Sullivan (1911-1991)

Abstract
A special issue of Moreana, no. 51 (1976), commemorated Professor Frank Sullivan, who died
prematurely after three decades of teaching in Los Angeles. The main feature of the huge biobibliography of More which he began at Saint Louis in the 1940s, and continued in California, with
peaks of work during two sabbatical years in England, is that it was done with the co-operation of his
wife Majie Padberg. As she continued the compilation on her own from 1976 to 1991, most of her
research was carried out at her desk as curator of the Frank Sullivan Memorial Book Room in the
Library of Loyola-Marymount University. This is perhaps the richest More collection in the world,
and the Sullivans negotiated its purchase from the Longstaff family, British descendants of More.
Moreana Material, the joint production of the Sullivan couple, consists of a preliminary bibliography
(1946), four volumes of abstracts arranged alphabetically (1964-1968), two supplements, an index
including a chronology of More’s life and writings, and a catalogue of the Longstaff collection. Our
article revisits these tomes one by one, assessing, at times correcting, more often completing, whether
with new authors, or new ‘moreanas’ by the persons who are included. It ends with quotations from
letters the Sullivans addressed to Angers.

Le décès de Maie Padberg Sullivan fournit à l’auteur l’occasion de feuilleter l’énorme compilation de « matériaux » sur
Thomas More qui fut l’œuvre d'une vie. Cela commença dès avant la seconde guerre mondiale, quand elle était condisciple
de son futur mari, Frank Sullivan, à l'Université jésuite de Saint-Louis, Missouri, et se poursuivit à Los Angeles où
Frank enseigna 29 années à l'Université Loyola-Marymount. Deux séjours sabbatiques en Angleterre enrichirent
beaucoup leur moisson, et aboutirent à l’achat d’une collection assemblée par la famille Longstaff, decendante de More.
Frank, mort en 1976, est évoqué dans le n ° 51 de Moreana. Majie continua seule l’entreprise commune. Le résultat
consiste en neuf cahiers substantiels: une bibliographie provisoire (1946), quatre volumes intitulés Moreana Material
(1964 à 1968), deux Suppléments, un Index assorti d’une chronologie, enfin un catalogue raisonné de la collection venue
d'Angleterre. Majie en demeura curatrice au nom de l’Université, et y trouva la plupart des matériaux utilisés dans ses
derniers tomes. Son autre source majeure à partir de 1963 était notre revue, dans laquelle les deux Sullivan écrivirent plus
d’un article. Notre hommage se termine par des citations de leur correspondance.
