Montréal
Botanical Garden
Founded in 1931 by
Brother Marie-Victorin
and designed by
landscape architect and
botanist Henry Teuscher,
the Montreal Botanical
Garden is a source of
immense pride and joy for
all Montrealers.
Designated a National
Historic Site of Canada
in 2009, the Montreal
Botanical Garden is one
of the world’s largest and
most prestigious botanical
gardens. Every year, some
750,000 visitors come
here to dream, to admire
its majestic rose garden,
to drink in the sweet
fragrance of its lilacs, to
marvel at its one-of-akind collections of ferns,
cactuses and orchids and
to experience the magic
of its authentic Chinese
garden… It is home to
tens of thousands of
plants and an environment
of unparalleled beauty and
serenity.
The Botanical Garden is also about
Education and Knowledge
The Montréal Botanical Garden is also proudly committed to promoting
education, furthering knowledge and serving the community. It hosts a
number of unique, custom-developed activities designed to provide
the public – especially the younger members of the community – with
opportunities to learn about botany and horticulture. These include the
celebrated Youth Gardens initiative and the brand-new Des jardins pour
une cuisine collective. And every year, thousands of Montrealers look
to the experts at the Botanical Garden for answers to their horticultural
questions.
Staff researchers are devoted to documenting biodiversity and developing
state-of-the-art technologies. Their discoveries are helping to improve
quality of life across the province, from reducing air pollution to reintroducing
endangered plants to their native habitat.
A recent survey named
the Montréal Botanical
Garden as one of the
seven wonders of Quebec
– the only destination in
Greater Montréal to make
the list.
Université de Montréal Biodiversity Centre
At the heart of the Botanical Garden, Université
de Montréal’s Biodiversity Centre is the natural
extension of a long collaboration between the two
institutions as part of the Institut de recherche
en biologie végétale (Plant Biology Research
Institute or IRBV). Since opening in March 2011,
the Biodiversity Centre has been an international
hub of excellence for biodiversity research.
The Biodiversity Centre also coordinates the
Canadensys network, which is a digital repository
bringing together the collections of 18 participating
universities and botanical gardens, and is compatible
with the world’s largest and most important
biodiversity databases. The network’s objective is to
make all the information contained in the biological
databases fully accessible.
This LEED Gold-certified building, a premier
venue for sharing resources and expertise, boasts
ultramodern facilities and provides work space for
some 50 researchers tasked with cataloguing,
preserving and showcasing biodiversity.
The Centre’s 400 m2 exhibition hall serves to
highlight not only the collections, but also the issues
surrounding biodiversity loss.
In addition to being a one-of-a-kind training ground,
the Centre also offers the ideal conditions for storing
a number of prestigious collections: 1.7 million
insect specimens, 900,000 plant specimens and
2,000 mushroom species.
The Government of Québec and the Canada
Foundation for Innovation have recognized the
value of this project by providing start-up grants
totalling over $15 million.
The collections housed at the Université de Montréal
Biodiversity Centre include:
›› The Marie-Victorin Herbarium
›› The Insectarium’s scientific collection
›› The Ouellet-Robert Entomological Collection
›› The Cercle des mycologues de Montréal Fungarium
