The development follows new negotiations in Istanbul on the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) signed between Nigeria and Turkey, where President Goodluck Jonathan is current on a three-day official visit. “By June this year, to be precise, the Nigeria side of the BASA would come into play. Good enough, Arik is now collaborating with Turkish Airline in that aspect. And by June, Arik will start flying from Nigeria to Turkey and that would now fulfil the Nigerian aspect of the BASA,” she told journalists in Istanbul, according a statement from the Nigerian presidency. Before now, Turkey was the only beneficiary of the BASA arrangement, with Turkish Airline operating flights into the main gateway Murtala Mohhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos thrice weekly. Arik Chair John Arumemi-Johson later said he was elated that his airline was selected to fly the Istanbul route and assured Nigerians of the airlines competence to deliver on its objectives. Airlines benefiting from high demand for flights to southern Sudan Yesterday reported that Kenya’s airlines are benefiting from more traffic to southern Sudan as the country’s week-long referendum drives demand. According to the newspaper, data from airlines show that the passenger traffic between Nairobi and Juba, the capital of southern Sudan, increased to just over 8,000 from a monthly average of 5,800 passengers. Airline executives at Fly540, Kenya Airways, Jetlink and Astral Aviation told Business Daily that they expect the higher demand to carry over into next month when the results of the referendum will be made known. Increased traffic is being driven by Sudanese nationals travelling to vote, non-governmental organisations, regional business people as well as journalists and referendum observers from across the globe. Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways, last year started servicing the Nairobi-Juba route. “Juba has become one of the important economic hubs [of] southern Sudan and Africa. Kenya Airways is synonymous with contributing to sustainable development across Africa. We envisage providing a seamless connection service to all passengers travelling in and out of Juba for business and development opportunities,” said Kenya Airways group managing director and chief executive officer, Dr Titus Naikuni, during a ceremony to mark the inaugural flight. Southern Sudan on Sunday began voting in a referendum to determine whether to remain part of a united Sudan or become a separate state. The referendum was a core component of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended decades of conflict between the Southern Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the Khartoum government. The west African nation, the world's top exporter of aluminium ore bauxite, has just completed a transition to civilian rule that should restore foreign aid and investment after two turbulent years under military control. "We anticipate an investment programme of $150 million to develop a dry port 15 km from Conakry to facilitate transport towards neighbouring countries," Vincent Bollore said on Guinea state television late on Wednesday. The port in Conakry handles nearly all goods shipped into Guinea, and to some land-locked neighbours like Mali. A project to extend the port has been caught up in a row between GETMA, which was awarded the contract, and rival Maersk. The Bollore group has worked in Africa for decades and is involved in the management of a number of ports long the west and central African coast. Senegal Airlines in bid to revive Airbus jet order PARIS (Reuters) - Senegal Airlines, the West African country's relaunched airline, is in talks with Airbus to buy around half a dozen aircaft including two A330 long-haul jets, its chief executive told Reuters. Such a deal would pick up the pieces of a tentative plan -- announced in 2009 but never implemented -- to order six aircraft worth $750 million. Senegal Airlines began operations last month using two leased Airbus A320-family aircraft after the previous national carrier collapsed last year. The airline now wants to try to win a better deal for planes it had originally planned to buy directly from Airbus. At the Dubai air show in 2009, it announced a provisional order for four medium-haul A320 aircraft and two A330 wide-body planes. "We went initially with leased planes and at the same time we are still in negotiations with Airbus to improve the terms and we are hopeful a good conclusion can be reached in the coming weeks and months," Chief Executive Edgardo Badiali said in a telephone interview. Senegal Airlines meanwhile expects to take a third leased plane in the third quarter this year. AU Summit Identifies Key Priority Infrastructure Projects Heads of State of the African Union Assembly, who met from 30-31 January 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, endorsed key priority projects identified by the NEPAD High-Level Sub-Committee on Infrastructure. The projects identified and their respective champions are as follows: The Missing Link of the Trans Sahara Highway Project and the Optical Fibre Project along the same alignment Algeria The Kinshasa-Brazzaville Road Rail Bridge Project The Republic of Congo Water Management, River and Rail Transport Infrastructure projects Egypt The Nigeria- Algeria gas pipeline project Nigeria ICT Broadband and Link to Fibre Optic Network into neighbouring states Rwanda Dakar-Ndjamena-Djibouti Rail and Road project Senegal The North South Corridor Rail and Road Projects South Africa These projects were identified based on the AU-NEPAD Africa Action Plan and in line with Programme for Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA), a programme led by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The AfDB attended the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Committee on the sides of the 16th African Union Summit in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, from 28-31 January 2011.. The previous summit had established the NEPAD High-Level Sub-Committee on Infrastructure (8 Heads of State and Government) comprising South Africa as chair, Algeria, Benin, Egypt, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Senegal. This Sub-Committee was mandated to prioritise and consolidate infrastructure projects for high impact and results; as well as approve modalities and procedures for championing infrastructure projects by specific Heads of State and Government. During a run-up meeting to the AU Summit, President Jacob Zuma presented a report detailing the recent steps taken, namely; that the criteria for selecting projects and champions were concluded; that projects were identified based on the AU-NEPAD Africa Action Plan and in line with Programme for Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA) as a strategic framework; and that respective champions were selected. The PIDA, an AfDB-led programme expected to be concluded by the end of 2011, will lead to design and development of the short, medium and long-term investment programs, addressing infrastructure needs in all key infrastructure sectors (transport, energy, ICT & trans-boundary water) up to 2040. It will serve as a platform to unify and coordinate actions by all key stakeholders, including regional member countries themselves, regional economic communities, infrastructure sector specialized institutions, private sector and development partners. The Heads of State also witnessed the formal launch of the revised AU/NEPAD African Action Plan (AAP), which the AfDB financed and managed in collaboration with the AU Commission and NEPAD Agency. The AAP’s objective is to develop an improved strategic framework, prioritisation of programs/projects and updated cost estimates for the interventions therein. “The launch of the AAP and emergence of political champions for a subset of its projects puts the continent on the right track for bridging some of its acute deficits in regional interconnectivity,” Performances Veille © 2011 Performances MC - www.performancesconsulting.com - Tous droits réservés 6 said Alex Rugamba, AfDB Regional Integration Director. “These concrete realisations will pave the way for a shared vision around agreed priority projects and policy frameworks, which will be crystallized in the PIDA study. This bodes well for the creation of an integrated African economy that will enable the continent to unleash its true potential,” he added.
