Hiéron, Sicile,Tyrannie, Syracuse, Athènes « Fortunes and misfortunes of a tyrant : the case of Hieron of Syracusae » The analysis focuses on the figure of Hieron, a Syracusan tyrant who met with mixed fortune in scholarly studies. Often compared with his brother Gelon, the second of the Deinonedides was seen as a rapacious and violent tyrant. We here reconsider the testimonies on Hieron in order to find out to what extent that judgment actually corresponds to the image which the tradition of Antiquity gave of the tyrant. The case of Hieron offers above all an opportunity to examine the lines which oriented the studies on tyranny in Sicily and to provide an outline of the latest prospects of research. Key words. Towards a fresh reading of Thucydides' “Sicilian Archeology” (VI, 1,1-2) » What historical value can be attributed to the "Sicilian Archeology" which opens up Thucydides' book VI, notably as regards the circumstances and modes of the arrival of the Phenicians in Sicily ? To answer that question, we try and understand the underlying logic of the text and seize the mental framework as well as the political context that inspired it. Thucydides' testimony stages a "colonial memory" which depicts the early times of Phenician presence in Sicily and propounds a hierarchized model of cohabitation within which the Greeks appear as the natural outcome of the colonizing process. At the core of Thucydides' discourse are to be found the current events, namely the destiny of Athens and her empire, the tragic expedition to Sicily, the questions of leadership within the city in the post-periclean era. His analysis purports to work out an intellectual tool useful for the handling of political action. Key words. Agrigente, hydraulique, paysage, Syracuse, territoire, ville « Water management in Greek Sicily : state of the issue » The article provides a survey of the archeological research in Sicily concerning the thematics of water. After an historiagraphic survey, it deals with the three main axes of study, namely the restitution of the antique landscape, the water management of the hinterland and the urban space of Greek cities. Lastly, it propounds fresh approaches meant to improve our knowledge of the vast arrangements at Agrigentum and Syracusae. Key words. Géostratégie carthaginoise, Hannibal, deuxième guerre punique, flotte punique, Sardaigne, Lilybée, Rome « Sicily in the Carthaginian strategy during Hannibal's war » Sicily is traditionally considered as a major stake of the first Punic war and an area of slight importance in the second one. That judgement needs to be reconsidered in the light of the analysis which L. Loreto had made of the Carthagenian geostrategy from the IVth to mid-IIIrd century B.C. As a matter of fact, Sicily constitutes a pillar round which revolve all the trade routes of Carthage, and it does not seem that Hannibal's war had for objective to restore the Punic city to her dominant position in the Mediterranean by relying on those central moorings. The route of his expedition, the assault of the Punic navy in the Tyrrhenian sea, the alliance with Hieronymos, are so many evidences which enable one to set up a new picture of the Punic strategy carried out by Hannibal. Conceptualisation, contact, identité, ethnicité, Sicile « Words to express words. Types of interaction, acculturation, and intercultural relationships in ancient Sicily (Vth-Ist century B.C.) » The aim of this text is to propound a reflection around and about the mechanisms of formation and propagation of the lexical tools of research by the moderns in order to comprehend the contact phenomena between different cultural contexts. Attention is here concentrated on a richly suggestive soil, namely modern research on ancient Sicily and the borrowing of words in particular from other disciplinary fields, namely those of anthropology and sociology. The ensuing epistemological issues are dealt with by a to-and-fro movement between certain testimonies from ancient historiography and epigraphy on the one hand and the ceaselessly shifting conceptualisations that characterize modern research on the other hand. It outlines the existence of optimistic and pessimistic interpretations of the period, and examines some of the underlying reasons (principally the surviving evidence) for these views. In undertaking a review of current work on the island, this survey offers a note of cautious optimism about the current and future state of scholarship on Roman Republican Sicily, consequent upon the broadening range of approaches adopted, and the widening body of published material evidence. It observes three major and widespread shifts in scholarly opinion: firstly, that private rather than state enterprise may have provided the initiative for the foundation of Greek sites in Sicily; secondly, that the inhabitants of the new settlements are likely to have derived from areas other than the mother-cities named in historical sources; and thirdly, that indigenous groups made significant contributions to the populations of Greek states through intermarriage and co-residence. Concomitant with these more recent views is a range of other revisions and additional areas of investigation, which include new theoretical approaches such as “hybridity” and the “middle ground”.
