RACE REPORT
Ardigo and Barrabeig open the list of Macau «Karting» award winners
Macau, which was once Portuguese, has now become Chinese again
with a special regime; it is not just the Asian Las Vegas because of its
plethora of casinos : it is also a historical Mecca for Motor Sport. Its Formula 3 Grand Prix is a major sporting event which saw the entry of several notorious drivers during their rise to Formula 1. The list of results
of the prestigious Formula 3 event includes in particular the names of
Ayrton Senna, of the brothers Schumacher and of David Coulthard.
The programme of the Grand Prix, held on the 6-km town circuit, also
recently integrated the final of the WTCC, the World Touring Car Championship.
As small as it may be (only 28 square km), the Macau territory includes a permanent circuit dedicated to Karting. Situated on the Coloane
island, 12 km from the city centre, the Karting track is 1,200 m long
and has a CIK-FIA licence since 2004.
Having organised international events in 2005 and 2006, the Automobile Club of Macau-China (AAMC) logically applied for the organisation of
a CIK-FIA Championship and was thus granted the Asia-Pacific Championship of the KF1 and KF3 categories, which took place on 13-16
December 2007. In addition to its joining the CIK-FIA Championships,
this Asian event was an opportunity of seeing Indian drivers take part
in a CIK-FIA competition for the very first time in the history of Karting.
More experienced and armed with their perfect knowledge of the new
KF engines, European drivers dominated both Championships. In KF1,
the Italian Marco Ardigo added a fourth major title to his credit in
2007 : after having won the European Championship, the World Cup in
Japan and the World Championship, he is now Asia-Pacific Champion !
In Macau, Ardigo finished ahead of his new team-mate, the Finn Matias
Laine, who was a good second and achieved the fastest lap time in the
final for his first competition with the colours of Tony Kart. Victims of
mechanical problems in the pre-final when in the lead, Gary Catt and
Alessandro Bressan shone in the final by achieving fine recoveries, respectively to 3rd and 4th places. Second in the pre-final, the Dutch driver Jack Te Braak was classified 5th, ahead of Norway’s Eidjord, Japan’s
Sugiyama, Nara and Kobayashi, while the good surprise of the event
came from the Filipino Stefano Marcelo who completed the “Top 10”.
In Junior (KF3), the Spaniard Gerard Barrabeig showed himself quite
unrelenting, successively carrying off practice, the heats, the pre-final
and the final. He offered in the process his first CIK-FIA title to the FA
Kart chassis dear to Fernando Alonso. The 2007 European Junior ViceChampion, Tom Grice, and Carlos Sainz Jr (the son of the double World
Rally Champion) accompanied Barrabeig on the final podium.

Ardigo et Barrabeig inaugurent
le palmarès «Karting» de Macau
Jadis portugais, aujourd’hui redevenu chinois sous un régime particulier, Macau n’est pas que le Las Vegas asiatique en raison de sa pléthore de casinos : il est aussi un haut-lieu historique du Sport Automobile.
Son Grand Prix de Formule 3 fait partie des évènements sportifs majeurs et a vu plusieurs pilotes de notoriété y faire escale, au cours de
leur montée vers la Formule 1. Au palmarès de la prestigieuse épreuve
de Formule 3 figurent entre autres les noms d’Ayrton Senna, des frères
Schumacher et David Coulthard. Le programme du Grand Prix, couru
sur un circuit urbain de 6 km, a aussi intégré récemment la finale du
WTCC, le Championnat du Monde des Voitures de Tourisme.
Aussi petit soit-il (seulement 28km2), le territoire de Macau compte un
circuit permanent, dédié au Karting. Situé sur l’île de Coloane, à 12 km
du centre-ville, la piste de karting est longue de 1200 m et détentrice
d’une licence CIK-FIA depuis 2004.
Après avoir organisé des épreuves internationales en 2005 et 2006,
l’Association Automobile de Macau-Chine (AAMC) a logiquement postulé
pour l’organisation d’un Championnat de la CIK-FIA et s’est ainsi vu attribuer le Championnat d’Asie-Pacifique pour les catégories KF1 et KF3,
couru ces 13-16 décembre 2007. Outre son entrée dans le giron des
Championnats de la CIK-FIA, ce rendez-vous asiatique a été l’occasion
de voir pour la toute première fois dans l’histoire du karting, des pilotes
indiens participer à une compétition de la CIK-FIA.
Plus expérimentés et forts d’une parfaite connaissance des nouveaux
moteurs KF, les pilotes européens ont dominé les deux Championnats.
En KF1, l’Italien Marco Ardigo a ajouté un quatrième titre majeur à son
actif de 2007: après qu’il ait gagné le Championnat d’Europe, la Coupe
du Monde au Japon et le Championnat du Monde, le voilà Champion
d’Asie-Pacifique ! A Macau, Ardigo a devancé son nouvel équipier, le
Finlandais Matias Laine, bon deuxième et auteur du meilleur temps en
Finale dès sa première apparition sous les couleurs Tony-Kart. Victimes
de leur mécanique en Préfinale alors qu’ils étaient leaders, Gary Catt et
Alessandro Bressan se sont illustrés en finale par de belles remontées,
respectivement jusqu’aux 3e et 4e places. Second de la Préfinale, le
Néerlandais Jack Te Braak s’est classé 5e, devant le Norvégien Eidjord,
les Japonais Sugiyama, Nara et Kobayashi, alors que la bonne surprise
de l’épreuve, le Philippin Stefano Marcelo, a complété le «Top 10».
En Juniors (KF3), l’Espagnol Gerard Barrabeig s’est montré intraitable,
remportant successivement les essais, les manches, la Préfinale et la
Finale. Il offre du même coup son premier titre CIK-FIA au châssis FA
Kart cher à Fernando Alonso. Le Vice-Champion d’Europe des Juniors
2007, Tom Grice, et Carlos Sainz Jr (le fils du rallyman double Champion du Monde) ont accompagné Barrabeig sur le podium final.
