C. Video transcript James Freeman I’m going to drive a thousand-dollar rust bucket through some of Australia’s roughest roads. I lost both of my parents to cancer… I lost my mother a few years ago, and my father twelve months after Mum died. So, I myself and my younger brother especially nursed Mum and Dad through the last stages of their lives. When Dad died, am, I guess I was a little lost. I needed to find, am, something that was going to excite me, and it was going to need to be something big because it was gonna take a lot to bring excitement and laugh and fun back Ben Freeman James, he’s a very strong person isn’t he? Very strong-minded person. Am, he sort of, he can make things happen which I think… that has really been proved with what he’s done with the rally, definitely. James Freeman It is about having fun. I mean, you can’t launch a rally called the Shitbox Rally and expect it to be serious. I put all of that together with how the rally itself could work and the idea that the cars being worth only a thousand dollars. I mean there had to be challenge aspects associated with it. I was fairly confident that if we received the support that we needed that the rally itself would grow fairly organically. This is the car I took in this last rally. It’s a 1985 Honda City pro. It’s ridiculously small. It has no rhyme or reason why it should be on the rally, other than the fact that it fits the bill nicely and is quite ridiculous. The money that we raise goes to the Cancer Council. In this last rally, we had a hundred and forty cars. At any stage, you pull over on the side of the road and a hundred vehicles that are all painted up, look amazing with the Shitbox Rally logo on the side and people beeping their horns and giving you a big wave as they come past. It’s hugely rewarding. It’s one of the best feelings I think you can have. Beth Freeman And just to channel your emotions and your anger in something so positive that you know will make a difference to other people is… I think it’s hugely important. James Freeman You know, before the first rally, I couldn’t even say ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’. I couldn’t look at photographs of them. And on the first rally was the first time that I could actually talk about them. And it was incredibly hard but it was great because I loved them so much. And I wanted to be able to talk about them. I think, from the death of Mum and Dad and then from me wanting to do something proactive and something different has borne something positive, which is the rally and the enthusiasm associated L’espace numérique Go Digital est protégé par le droit d'auteur. I always find that if you’re entertaining people, then people will happily hand over money to be entertained, and really that’s what fundraising is. You’re doing something that appeals to you and appeals to other people, and it’s always gonna work. And just some drive and enthusiasm, and anyone, anyone, can fundraise.
