This is Jouni from Helsinki: My "Bam" film is not yet in production, but we - me and Kaarle
Aho (Prod 5) who is the producer... - were in Siberia two months ago. It was fun.. and hard!
And a month ago we pitched in Reykjavik: results have been good and it seems that we can
make the film, and it is maybe going to be even "bigger" film than we though few months
ago... Our next step is pitching at Idfa... So see you in Amsterdam. Best regards,

Society Awards as best factual programme from Scotland in 2004, Hidden Gifts, The Mystery

Buon Viaggio, Michelangelo !
The french version of the film is ready. The Italian and English versions will be ready in
spring 2005. At the moment I'm trying to obtain Italian regional funds and taking
agreements with Italian newspapers for the DVD distribution. Buon Viaggio, Michelangelo is
produced by Fandango and Merapi productions in association with Arte (France), TVE (Spain),
Rai (Italy), Planet (Italy), Fondazione Ansaldo, Istituto Luce.

L’hôtel de mes rêves!
I have just returned from Senegal, where we screened the 2003 EURODOC film “The Hotel”,
now titled “L’HOTEL DE MES REVES for the inhabitants of the people in Popenguine, where we
shot the film.
We had also made a 16 min. short doc. called “Le voix de Popenguine” (Voices of Popenguine)
to screen before the long doc. It contained statements by a number of people from the
village on 4 themes – the village, the hotel, tourism and the future. Every new person, who
appeared on the screen were received with cheers. It was a great experience, seeing people
watch themselves on the screen and hearing their laughs and their discussions afterwards.
We shot some footage during the screenings, at the first one on Saturday evening 700 people
turned up, on the second on Sunday night there were 500 people!

A Women’s support Movement defending the dictatorship was set up in 1958. From the
thousands of letters we discovered, it is clear that Salazar had strong popular support. He
was loved and respected almost like a religious leader. Some precious archive show these
women screaming under the dictator window like adolescents in a rock concert. But Salazar
was an austere man, celibate and apparently sexless. What did this love signify then ?

The big news from me is hat I am no longer with Stanta. My colleague Cormac Hargaden and
I, hav set up on our own. We are now motive television. It worked out as a management buy
out of Setanta Television. Setanta Sport (the broadcaster) and my division were obviously
developing in opposite directions so this seemed the best for everyone. I'm delighted. It's a
great opportunity. We have kept some of our own way. So, an exciting 2005 ahead for me,
and I'm sure for everyone else too. Hope to see at least some of you this year.

Je vous signale que j'ai fait un pré-montage du film que j'ai développé avec Eurodoc : on a eu
un cable, un peu de CNC et la Procirep. Je devrais bientôt commencer à travailler avec une
monteuse. Ensuite nous devrons chercher d'autres fonds.

The World of Boris Lurie
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get funding yet. (A not very well known artist and a
holocaust survivor does not fit in the regular program and was too late to get one of the
uncountable shoah-memorial-documentary-slots and perhaps too late to change the title
too?). Circumstances forced me to start with the shooting without funding. The main
character of my film is 80 and he felt seriously ill last summer. That’ s why I went to New
York for shooting in October, when he felt much better. Most of the shooting is done now. I
worked with the well-known cameraman Rainer Hoffmann (Berlin) who has made a lot of
award-winning documentary films for arte/ARD/ZD. The material looks great. Boris Lurie and
his friends are impressing! I am very happy that we made it!
Now I am working on the rough-cut to figure out, what else we need to shoot and where else
we have to go to finish the film. With the rough-cut it should be more likely to convince
commissioning editors to support the project. Maybe I am dreaming...... but I am still very
confident!

Dali nominated aux Emmy’s!!
Le Project sur Dali que j'avais ‘sous la table’ quand j'ai participé à Eurodoc-Production 20002001 a été co-produit avec la société française Article Z et la participation de France 5
(Muriel Rosé). Le film poursuit sa carrière aux Emmy's internationaux. Il a été nominé pour le
meilleur programme d'art du continent européen!
J'ai très souvent pensé que je n'aurais pas pu réaliser ce film, sans notre équipe de travail,
mais sans doute pas non plus sans la formation suivie à EURODOC.

Jérome Amimer (Prod 5) - Leitmotiv Production (France) a obtenu une aide au développement
de la PROCIREP. France 5 s’est positionné comme le co-producteur principal et le film a
obtenu des pré-achats de la TSR, de la TSI (Suisse), de la RTBF (Belgique), de SBS (Australie),
de DR TV (Danemark), de YLE (Finlande), de TV Ontario (Canada) ainsi que TV5 Monde!
Jérôme Amimer et son co-producteur Mike Chamberlain de Stampede (UK) sont en
pourparlers avec la BBC. Le co-producteur belge Aurélien Bodineaux de Néon Rouge, a
déposé une demande auprès de la Communauté Française de Belgique.

Shoah and Pin-ups
I have some news regarding my project "Shoah and Pin-ups” I developed through Eurodocscript in 2003-2004. The main character of my film is 80 years old and he felt seriously ill
last summer. That’s why I went to New York for shooting in October, when he felt much
better. Now more than half of the shooting is done. I worked together with the well-known
cameraman Rainer Hoffmann from Berlin. He made a lot of documentary films for ZDF/arte.
The material looks great and I am very happy that we made it! There is no financing till today
but I am working on the financing and I believe in the project! I am planning to finish
shooting till March 2005 and making a rough-cut till April. As you may have heard there is a
vivid exchange in between the German group and we have had Eurodoc Session 3 in Bonn!
The next meeting will be to discuss my rough-cut. That’s nice isn’t it?

Fierce People
Having gained complete access to the man at the centre of the controversy, Napoleon
Chagnon, we have shot him at his home in America and out hunting.
On the Funding front, we have are following up on three American distributors who have
shown serious interest in taking the north American rights.
In terms of archive, we have gained access to all the finished films material that we would
need. We are in the final stages of securing access to rushes of the Chagnon films via the
Smithsonian Institute and Timothy Asch’s widow. Chagnon has already given us his
unmitigated permission.

'Through Hell and High Water', a feature documentary developed through Eurodoc won a
Silver World Medal at the New York Festivals 2005 in the documentary feature category. Carl
Ludwig Rettinger from Lichtblick Films was the co-producer.
Taylored Productions developing a documentary called 'Still Trucking After All These Years' a big important film on being black in the 20th century while taking us right up to the
present complex 21st century, as seen through the eyes and experiences of Dr. Maya
Angelou, the highly respected African American poet and writer. Awaiting news of first

The guggenheim and the baroness
I am very happy with my EURODOC project : it was screened on Arte with favourable review,
we had the U.S. premiere at the Guggenheim itself with a reception. Now the Goethe-Institut
has invited me to New York again to show the film after the opening of the Rebay show at the
Guggenheim in May. We have one a Bronze Medal at the New York Festivals and were / are
invited to the Szolnok Festival (Hungary) and the Montréal Film Festival of Fine Arts.

Isabelle, so nice to hear from you, but I am under so much pressure here at the moment in
the middle of production on a big BBC1 dance project - I can’t quite click into the Eurodoc
‘state of mind’ !!!! All I can hope is that I will surface soon from the local broadcaster and
get back into the Euro thinking with new international projects to collaborate on….. I’m
snowed under working here on these two big BBC 1 prime time dance docs, but still feel
connected to the network, which is saying something about the strength of the relationships
made through Eurodoc, and the working process…. Love to all, and I’ll surface in Europe
again soon with some new collaborations!!!!

Dream Land by Leila Pakalnina
The Vides Filmu Studija and NDR/arte coproduction “Dream Land” has been finished summer
2004 in 3 versions. We are also very happy that original music for the film was composed by
famous Japanese film composer Shigeru Umebayashi. The ARTE version was broadcasted n
September 2004 as well as selected for Nordische Filmtage Luebeck. The short version (35
min, without narration) was selected for Pusan International Film Festival and IDFA.

J’ai co-produit avec Zangra Productions le film "Mauriac un journaliste engagé" et ai conclu
un préachat avec la RTBF.
J'ai pu grâce à EURODOC constituer un réseau de producteurs, pour le projet documentaire
sur l'Argentine, "Le tango de la dette" de Marie-France Collard. Pour l'Allemagne, je travaille
avec Meike Martens de Ma.Ja.De et nous avons de sérieuses pistes de financement et depuis
peu, un producteur argentin, Américo Films, compte se joindre à nous.
Je suis en contact avec Grenade Production pour “Rwanda 94” et “Rwanda 2004”, projets de
films produits par le Groupov (troupe de théâtre belge) pour qui je travaille en tant que
producteur exécutif. GRENADE PRODUCTIONS va prochainement entrer en coproduction sur
le documentaire “Rwanda 2004”.
Amorces de coproduction sur des projets avec Mat Films et Audiovisioconcept.
Pour moi, le réseau fonctionne et c’est formidable !

In Search of My Family
I have been on and off shooting for the last long time. I did a few days shooting with my
mother in August 2003 in Oxford. Since then I have filmed her having tea with Nelson
Mandela and also receiving an award from the President in Pretoria - and I used that
opportunity to take her back to certain locations in Jhb that were in the script - and that
worked well.
In the meantime the film I completed in April 'A South African Love Story' was shown in
Toronto and has been well received elsewhere and has been
chosen to be shown on Robben Island during Sithengi in Cape Town.
About to start edit – which has been delayed due to finance.
