The images by Alain Delorme seem to capture the murmurations of birds, balletic,
synchronized, and dramatically graceful. However, upon closer look, the viewer discovers that the calligraphic shapes are made up of thousands of plastic bags, meticulously arranged by the artist.
The bags twist, weave, and undulate in concert with each other creating a visual mesh
of kinetic fluctuation. The digital creations reflect the idea of a land art installation,
metamorphosing natural spaces through an artistic intervention.

En anglais, murmuration désigne les formations des vols d’étourneaux, une image
poétique détournée par le photographe Alain Delorme pour dénoncer les méfaits
de la société de consommation. Ses images, exposées en grand format, attirent par
leur apparence idyllique. Pourtant, observées plus en détail, elles prennent un tour
inquiétant quand les oiseaux se transforment en nuées de sacs plastiques. Une série
d’œuvres puissantes, qui explore le thème des apparences trompeuses et de la beauté empoisonnée.

La Taubert Contemporary de Berlin expose, depuis le 21 septembre et jusqu’au 9
novembre, la série « Murmurations » d’Alain Delorme. Une excellente occasion pour
revenir sur ce travail du photographe français. Celui-ci y présente une série de clichés
où des nuées de volatiles occupent les cieux et l’horizon de paysages marqués d’une
forme ou d’une autre par l’urbanisme et la civilisation moderne. Les oiseaux y dessinent un ballet aux lignes tantôt calligraphiques, tantôt organiques. Pourtant, en y regardant de plus près, l’on découvre que ces chorégraphies migratoires sont mises en
mouvement par des sacs plastiques qu’Alain Delorme a numériquement introduits sur
ses clichés. Le photographe transpose ainsi la pratique propre au Land Art dans son
univers et agit directement sur les paysages qu’il a préalablement capturés. Un procédé qui, dans l’esprit de ses séries précédentes, pousse à l’extrême les effets produits
par toute intervention humaine pour mieux les notifier et les interroger.

A Ballet Performed by Birds: Starling Murmurations Created

Just by their natural habits, some animals make art. From the famous webs of spiders, to the amazing arrangements of the sand bubbler crab, many animals leave us
with beautiful patterns in the wake of their everyday life. If spiders and crabs leave us
sculptural works of art, then the starling is a performance artist. These small european
birds flock together, forming moving clouds of flapping wings that shimmer with life in
motion. These flocks are called a murmuration.

the blink of an eye – each moment is a unique one, never to be repeated again by the
thousands of birds in a murmuration. Artist Alain Delorme has been re-creating these
fleeting moments in a most unusual way: with his camera and thousands of plastic
bags meticulously arranged to represent the bird formations.
Real murmurations have been captured in two notable films shown below – perhaps
the only way to truly appreciate these birds and their very unique behavior. One film
is a chance encounter by Islands & Rivers while out on a canoe trip, and the other is by
Neels Castillon, who explains the phenomenon:
“The mesmerizing act is typically seen at dusk throughout Europe, between November
and February. Each evening, shortly before sunset, starlings can be seen performing
breathtaking aerial manoeuvres, before choosing a place to roost for the night. These
range in number from a few hundred to tens of thousands of birds. Murmurations
exhibit strong spatial coherence and show extremely synchronized maneuvers, which
seem to occur spontaneously, or in response to an approaching threat.”
