INTERVIEW. A third breath-taking opus Interview: Gaëlle Hennet Photographs: whitebalance LAurE mI hyuN CroSEt Sur La Terre: What was it about Lionel’s story that made you want to make it the subject of your novel? 98 Laure Mi Hyun Croset: I’d known Lionel for a long time. He was the founder of the Swiss electronic music label Littlehouse records. However, one evening last winter, in a bar in Geneva, I discovered another side to him. After talking about our respective artistic projects, he told me that he would like someone to write about his life, because he had a statement of his life: a summary of what he considered to be his former life, written during his last treatment for drug addiction, which ended 17 years of addiction. He wanted to come out into the open about this part of his life and show that it was possible to get through it. When I read his text, I was faced with the account of a life filled with crossroads; the story of a boy who suffered, like others, from his parents lack of understanding. His search to belong led him to behave unreasonably; he was literally carried away by the flow of his existence. In his text, I found the material for a story that I wanted to write without excessive compassion or judgement, just with modesty and accuracy. SLT: Did you add fiction to his story? L.M.H.C: No, Lionel was the guarantor of the truth of everything described. As there was no apparent logic, it seemed important to me to respect the chronology of his story. We worked together a lot during this project. That said, I was given carte blanche for the type of narration and the style! SLT: This account bears witness to a great deal of work on language, which is evoked from the outset by the title, On ne dit pas “je”! (You don’t say “I”). How should it be understood? Consequently, the challenge I set myself is to find a suitable solution to solve it. Throughout this long and often painful task, I’m not in search of beautiful sentences. For me, elegance means the use of few means, clarity and accuracy. All in all, my style is very clinical. In fact, someone recently told me that when I write, I “pare things down to the bone”! SLT: At the end of the book, a QR code invites the reader to listen to an album produced by Littlehouse records. Can you tell us about that? L.M.H.C: In addition to the book, Lionel produced an album with 13 tracks of electronic music, which is meant to be the story’s original soundtrack. Every one of the tracks was created by a different artist on the basis of the protagonist’s record collection and extracts from my manuscript. SLT: What are your plans for the coming months? Are you already working on your next novel? L.M.H.C: My next book will be dedicated to Olivier Voisin, the great war correspondent for Le Monde and Paris Match, who died in Syria a year ago. I had the chance to spend a few days with him the year before. Part of his life was going to be the subject of my third book, but his death changed things. I don’t want to write a funeral oration. I would simply like to pay tribute to a man who had an extraordinary career, who became passionate about photography very early on, before leaving in search of his birth mother in Korea. The main challenge of this story will be to find the right distance. L.M.H.C: It’s a common expression, evoking a manner of speaking that refers to Lionel’s world, insofar as his mother said this to him on a number of occasions during his childhood. At the same time, this title also refers to language and literature. The role and the place of “I” in the account have been the subject of many discussions, since Rimbaud’s famous phrase, je est un autre (I is someone else). In my text, this title acts as a reading key, which announces a central theme, that of identity: of the author, who carves the language so that it fits a reality, that of the narrator, sometimes discretely marking their presence, but also, and above all, that of the character, whose identity was annihilated by drugs at times. For me, it was a question of telling a story, by showing the evolution of a character throughout his life, his childhood, his teenage years and his wanderings, the stages around which the story is based. SLT: Was it a pleasure to write this novel? L.M.H.C: Writing doesn’t give me any pleasure, but having written does. I see writing as a problem, and I don’t think I’m the only one. TRANSLATION n. 53 LAURE MI HYUN CROSET UN TROISIÈME OPUS HALETANT APRÈS LES VELLÉITAIRES (LUCE WILQUIN, 2010) ET UNE AUTOFICTION, POLAROÏDS (LUCE WILQUIN, 2011), QUI LUI VALUT DE REMPORTER LE PRIX EVE DE L’ACADÉMIE ROMANDE 2012, LA BRILLANTE ÉCRIVAINE GENEVOISE PUBLIE AUX ÉDITIONS BSN PRESS ON NE DIT PAS « JE » !, UN TROISIÈME OUVRAGE À L’ÉCRITURE CISELÉE, QUI RELATE LA LONGUE DÉAMBULATION DANS L’UNIVERS DE LA DROGUE DE L’UN DE SES AMIS, LIONEL STÉPHANE DULEX. RENCONTRE. Comment peut-on l’interpréter ?
