CARCASSONNE
- A World Heritage City -
Accessibility Guide
2016 2017
foreword
The Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office has since 2006 committed itself to
the principles of France’s disability charter, “Tourisme et Handicap”, in order
to ensure that its clients are well catered for and find accessible facilities and
amenities.
The nationwide “Tourisme et Handicap” label enables persons with disability
to obtain reliable, standardized and objective accessibility information on visitor attractions and amenities for the four major categories of disability (motor,
visual, hearing and mental).
Produced by the Carcassonne Municipal Tourist Office, this guide will contribute to facilitating tourist activities and everyday life for persons with disability,
so that they may enjoy their stay in our city. I wish you all an enjoyable visit to
Carcassonne.
Gérard LARRAT,
President of the Municipal Tourist Office.
The nationwide “Tourisme et Handicap” label
provides reliable information on the accessibility of
visitor attractions and amenities. It takes into
account the four main types of disability (motor,
visual, hearing and mental) and ensures
accessibility and facilities enabling independence in
everyday living. Sites are accredited for one, two,
three or four of the types of disability.

Welcome to Carcassonne
Situated within the Toulouse-Montpellier-Barcelona triangle, the
Prefecture of the Aude department and with a population of 48893,
Carcassonne is known throughout the world for its two attractions on
the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites:
Its Medieval City, unlike any other in Europe. Its history is marked by 2000
years of conquests and bears the stamp of Catharism and the Crusades.
Its Canal du Midi, where children and adults alike can stroll, take to the
water in boats or cycle.
Be sure also to visit the Bastide Saint Louis, Carcassonne’s town centre,
built on a rectangular plan in 1260 by order of king Saint Louis. A host of
important buildings, religious edifices, museums and private mansions can
be discovered at the heart of a labyrinth of streets packed with shops and
shady squares.
For lovers of nature Carcassonne has the GR 36 hiking trail, the pilgrim
trail to Santiago de Compostella (start of the Piemont Pyrénéen walkers’
path) and the Cavayère Lake, where a wide range of activities is on offer,
including a children’s playground, water sports, sandy and grassy beaches,
supervised bathing in summer and rambling.
Throughout the year the city stages entertainment of many kinds : the
Carcassonne Festival, a fireworks extravaganza with the City in flames (14th
of July), medieval knights and tournaments, its Feria, its Christmas Magic fair
and in October Open Days for All…
Come and discover the delights of our charming city, where you will find a
host of accessible amenities, featured in the following pages.
