LESSON 7
In this lesson, we focus on drawing retiré signs, legato lines, and inwardly curved
movement lines (when limbs flex and extend).
1. Copy these sequences in the stave segment provided.
To place the retiré sign, first draw the basic contact sign at the centre line of the frame.
Then add the qualifying line or open dot.
Relevé devant and derrière (left then right working leg)
Battement frappé fouetté (devant-derrière)
Fouetté à terre (RAD Flic-flac)
Note: Draw basic signs first, then add movement lines.

2. Add fine, light inwardly curved movement lines in the second stave below, then recopy the
phrase in the empty stave. Compare these inwardly curved movement lines to the
outwardly curved lines used for grand battement (Lesson 4). Remember to add “barre”.

recopy the leg position in the empty frame below. Notice the relative placement of the
knee and foot in RAD, Russian and Cecchetti attitudes.

LESSON 8
In this lesson we practise drawing turn signs and placing them between versus below frames.
1. When the dancer’s direction changes between two positions, the turn sign is placed
between frames.

2. When the dancer spins in a held position, the turn sign is centred below the frame.
