December 2nd the diva would have turned 90!
During her early childhood, Varduhi listened to the recordings of her idol, the very first
recordings she ever listened to. Her father, a renowned baritone-bass and a People’s Artist of
the Armenian Republic, introduced Varduhi to the classical music. Thanks to him, Varduhi
enjoyed listening to the recordings of great singers. A significant part of her father’s collection comprised Callas recordings. Varduhi’s bookcase and audio library abounded in books
about the diva but also contained CD’s and DVD’s, sounding the magical voice of the opera
singer.

Impregnated with the art of this stage legend, Varduhi turned to the opera as early as 14, and
ever since an important part of her artistic life has been devoted to this outstanding singer.
The prize winner of numerous international singing competitions, among which the
Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (Andorra), the Julian Gayarre International Singing Competition (Pamplone, Spain), the International Competition Vincenzo
Bellini (Caltanisetta, Italy), the Verviers International Singing Competition (Belgium), etc.,
in 2001 Varduhi was the winner the Grand Prix Maria Callas in Athens, Greece, which gave
her the opportunity to perform opera roles, to receive offers from artist agents and to get invited to prestigious festivals. The channels TV MEZZO (France) and TV KLASSICH (Germany) etc. recorded her voice.
Varduhi has been invited to take part in concerts in memoriam Maria Callas on many occasions. In particular, she gave a recital in her memory with the Orchestra Mégaron (Athens,
Greece).
In her career, Varduhi sang together with Montserrat Caballé, Angela Gheorghiu, José Cura
and others. However, her dream to meet her idol was never fulfilled.
A mezzo-soprano with a wide range and easy sharps, Varduhi has always sung soprano arias
from the repertoire of Maria Callas. Her own repertoire is quite impressive and extends from
the baroque to the contemporary: Operas, operettas, oratorios, vocal chamber music. Yet,
she gives priority to the opera and especially to dramatic roles because of her admiration for
this great lady.
During this jubilee year, Varduhi gave recitals dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Callas
in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Antwerp, and today in Geneva. The series shall be completed
with a recital in Armenia. In tonight’s program, she will sing arias from the repertoire of the
Opera Magician, namely Maria Callas!

Varduhi Khachatryan, la mezzo-soprano arménienne ne pouvait pas rester indifférente et ne pas fêter à sa manière l’anniversaire de la grande Callas. En effet, le 2 décembre
prochain la diva aurait eu 90 ans.
Dès sa tendre enfance, Varduhi écoutait les enregistrements de son idole, les tout premiers
qu’elle n’ait jamais écoutés. Le père de Varduhi, baryton-basse de renom et artiste du peuple
de la Republique d’Arménie, a initié Varduhi à la musique classique. Il lui faisait écouter
les enregistrements des grands chanteurs d’opéra. Une partie importante de sa collection
comprenait les enregistrements de Callas. La bibliothèque et la phonothèque de Varduhi regorgent de livres sur la diva, mais également de CD et de DVD, témoins de la voix magique
de la cantatrice.
Toute imprégnée de l’art de cette grande légende des scènes, dès l’âge de 14 ans, Varduhi s’est
dirigée vers l’art lyrique et depuis lors, une grande partie de sa vie artistique est liée a cette
cantatrice hors-pair.
Lauréate de plusieurs concours internationaux de chant, parmi lesquels le Concours international de chant Montserrat Caballé (Andorre), le Concours international de voix de
Julian Gayarre (Pamplone, Espagne), le Concours international de voix V. Bellini de Caltanisseta (Italie), le Concours international de voix de Verviers (Belgique) etc., en 2001
Varduhi remporta le Grand prix Maria Callas d’Athènes (Grèce), ce qui lui permit d’obtenir
plusieurs engagements à l’opéra; des offres d’agents artistiques, des invitations aux festivals
prestigieux etc. Les chaînes TV MEZZO (France) et TV KLASSICH (Allemagne), etc. l’ont
enregistrée.
Varduhi a été invitée à plusieurs reprises à prendre part à des concerts en hommage à la Callas. Ainsi, entre autres, elle a donné un récital à la mémoire de Maria Callas avec l’Orchestre
Mégaron (Athènes, Grèce).
Dans sa carrière, Varduhi a chanté aux côtés de Montserrat Caballé, d’Angela Gheorghiu, de
José Cura et d’autres. Cependant, pour elle, rencontrer son Idole, resta un rêve inaccessible
pour toujours.
Mezzo-soprano, disposant d’une tessiture ample et des aigus faciles, Varduhi a toujours
chanté les airs de soprano du répertoire de Maria Callas. Son répertoire est vaste, allant de
l’ère baroque à la musique contemporaine: Opéras, opérettes, oratorios, musique de chambre vocale. Néanmoins elle privilégie l’opéra et surtout les rôles dramatiques, à cause de son
admiration pour cette grande dame du chant.
En cette année du jubilé, Varduhi a donné des récitals dédiés au 90ième anniversaire de
Callas à Amsterdam, Copenhague, Anvers et aujourd’hui à Genève. Ce cycle sera bouclé en
Arménie. Au programme de cette soirée, elle interprétera des airs d’opéra du répertoire de
la Magicienne de l’art lyrique qu’était MARIA CALLAS.
Mme Khachatryan sera accompagnée par la pianiste Evgenia Pilyavina.
