SHAWN KURUNERU
‘Northern Song’
We are pleased to present ‘Northern Song’, Shawn Kuruneru’s second exhibition at the gallery.
The twelve works displayed are abstract paintings comprised of flat-surfaces, layers of colourful
acrylic washes along with stark black and white pieces, interspersed with ink marks applied
through the process of stippling to compose intricate arrangements.
Paring down mark making to its most basic form, Kuruneru uses dots to explore a more liberated
mark. A common tool used for communication, an ink pen, is used to create distinct marks in
Kuruneru's work; repeated without restraint, the grouping of dots are evocative of a landscape.
The title Northern Song refers to the Great Age of Chinese Landscape Painting. In the history of ink
painting, the 10th Century Northern Song Dynasty was regarded as the highest form of Chinese
painting. We can see how the works of Guo Xi, a Northern Song master known for his technique
of layering ink washes to build up forms and multiple perspectives, relates to Kuruneru's recent
work ‘Mountains and Water’; layers of ink applied to a wet surface move around until the ink dries
and becomes one with the canvas. The result is an array of black dots that evinces movement but
retains a mystery to the achievement of floating perspectives.
If taken out of historical context and thought of as an actual song, then Northern Song brings to
mind a musical aspect in Kuruneru's mark making. Dot works are made up of repetition and
repetition is used in music to create rhythm. Rhythm and repetition are at the root of movement and
all Kuruneru's works are visually vibrating, rumbling, echoing, and colliding in compact chaos.
Kuruneru continues his investigation of mark making, colour and abstraction. The works in this
exhibition are a build up of time and simple marks that slowly reveal more with each viewing;
expressing a reverence to art history and the instinctual act of drawing.
Shawn Kuruneru, Canadian born 1984, lives and works in New York. Kuruneru received his
B.F.A. from Concordia University in 2006. He has had solo gallery exhibitions in America and
Europe such as 'Waiting Room' Bortolami (Room X), New York, 'A White Hand Slowly Turning
Green' ribordy contemporary, Geneva, 'Cantorage' Night Gallery, Los Angeles and 'The Object is
Freedom' Blackston Gallery, New York. He has been in group shows in America and Canada such
as 'Day Job' Drawing Center, New York, 'But the Clouds' Room East, New York, 'Call it a good
marriage' Battat Contemporary, Montreal. His drawings were acquired by the Montreal
Contemporary Art Museum.

‘Northern Song’
Nous sommes heureux de présenter ‘Northern Song’, deuxième exposition de Shawn Kuruneru à
la galerie. Les douze œuvres exposées sont des peintures abstraites composées de surfaces planes,
couches de lavis acryliques colorées avec des pièces noires et blanches rigides, entrecoupées de
marques d'encre appliquées à travers le processus de pointillés pour composer des arrangements
complexes.
Dépouillant le processus de marquage à sa forme la plus basique, Kuruneru utilise des points afin
d'explorer une marque plus libérée. Un outil couramment utilisé pour la communication, un stylo à
encre, permet de créer des marques distinctes dans le travail de Kuruneru; répété sans contrainte,
le regroupement de points est évocateur d'un paysage.
Le titre ‘Northern Song’ se réfère à l'âge d'or de peinture chinoise du paysage. Dans l'histoire de la
peinture à l'encre, la dynastie Northern Song du 10ème siècle a été considérée comme la plus
importante période de la peinture chinoise. Nous pouvons voir comment les travaux de Guo Xi, un
maître Northern Song connu pour sa technique de superposition de lavis d'encres afin de
construire des formes et des points de vue multiples, se rapporte aux travaux récents de Kuruneru
‘Mountains and Water’; les couches d'encre appliquées sur une surface mouillée évoluent jusqu'à
ce que l'encre sèche et ne fasse plus qu'un avec la toile. Le résultat est une série de points noirs qui
témoigne du mouvement, mais conserve un mystère dans la réalisation de perspectives flottantes.
Prises hors d’un contexte historique et pensées comme une partition, alors ‘Northern Song’
évoque un aspect musical dans le processus de marquage (‘mark making’) de Kuruneru. Les
oeuvres réalisées à partir de points sont le fruit de la répétition, celle-ci est utilisée en musique pour
créer un rythme. Rythme et répétition sont à l'origine du mouvement et toutes les œuvres de
Kuruneru visuellement vibrent, grondent, font écho, et entrent en collision dans un chaos compact.
Kuruneru poursuit sa recherché de marquage, de couleur et d’abstraction. Les oeuvres présentées
dans cette exposition sont la résultante d’une accumulation de temps et de marques simples qui
révèlent lentement plus avec chaque visionnement, exprimant une reverence à l’histoire de l’art et
l’acte instinctif de dessin.
Shawn Kuruneru (*1984, Canada), vit et travaille à New York. Kuruneru a reçu son B.F.A. de
l’Université de Concordia en 2006. Il a eu des expositions personnelles aux Etats-Unis et en
Europe, telles que 'Waiting Room' Bortolami (Room X), New York, 'A White Hand Slowly Turning
Green' ribordy contemporary, Genève, 'Cantorage' Night Gallery, Los Angeles et 'The Object is
Freedom' Blackston Gallery, New York. Il a participé à des expositions de groupe aux Etats-Unis et
