Saft joins JOULES consortium
to reduce ship emissions
Saft delivers energy storage expertise through pioneering EU-funded JOULES project
consortium, which aims to make significant cuts to emissions produced by the European
shipping sector
Paris, January 22nd, 2014 – Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of advanced
technology batteries for industry has joined the EU-funded ‘Joint Operation for Ultra Low
Emission Shipping’ (JOULES) consortium to work proactively to reduce the level of emissions
from Europe’s shipping industry.
With 39 partners from 10 countries, the consortium is the largest European marine project of its
type and has the objective of integrating energy saving technologies into the earliest design
stages of the shipbuilding process. This will help protect the environment from waste, gas
emissions and noise produced by European-built ships.
In addition to Saft, the JOULES consortium includes major players in the European maritime
sector, including leading shipbuilders Damen, STX Europe and Navantia; marine technologists
Imtech Marine and Rolls Royce; plus engine and propulsion specialists Wartsila, amongst
others.
The collaborative partners will bring together their expertise in technology, modeling, fabrication
and ship fitting. During the four-year duration of the project, the partners will produce a total of
11 application cases in five areas of shipping: ferries, cruise ships, work boats, offshore vessels
and cargo vessels.
Saft will draw on its marine battery expertise, including a track-record in the development of
integrated lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems, to participate in two of the 11 work packages:
‘Storage, distribution and electrical converters’ and ‘Work boats’. These have the objectives of
reducing the emission and energy consumption of tug boats by at least 20 percent by 2025 and
by more than 40 percent for a virtual prototype tug designed for launch in 2050. Saft will model
Li-ion battery performance and propose the appropriate electrical architecture.
The work packages will not only reduce the emission of CO2 and pollutants from working boats
but will also increase engine efficiency, reduce maintenance down-time and enable
shipbuilders to consider alternative fuels and new business models, at the same time as
preserving levels of safety.
“By participating in the JOULES consortium, Saft is demonstrating its commitment to the
environmental credentials of the civil marine market as pressure grows to limit emissions of
greenhouse gases,” said Didier Jouffroy, Saft’s Marine Technical Adviser, “The project will build
on Saft’s track record of supplying Li-ion energy storage systems for onboard propulsion and
auxiliary power.”

JOULES is not the only project that will benefit from Saft’s leadership in Li-ion battery
technology for the maritime sector. Saft is also taking part in the EU-funded POSE2IDON and
TEFLES projects. The former aims to investigate commercial applications for electric ship
technology, while the TEFLES project has the objective to develop technologies and operation
strategies for reduction of emissions from RORO (roll on roll off) and ferry operations.
