Christmas Boxes Déchetterie (Rubbish Tip
Christmas Boxes
The pompiers (firemen) and facteurs (postmen) will call selling
calendars during the first two weeks or so of December. There are
no prices on the calendars! At the moment the normal donation is
around 10 Euros, though they will be delighted with more!!
Déchetterie (Rubbish Tip)
There will almost certainly be one in your commune, or at the very
least your nearest town, although you may only use the Déchetterie
appropriate to your commune. They will give you a card or sheet of
paper with their opening times and the different sort of rubbish
they will accept. Your Mairie will also have this information.
French Lessons
Information on local courses is sometimes available in your local Mairie or
Hôtel de Ville. Some courses are arranged through the Job Centre for

Pets
If you are importing any animal from outside France, you need to
contact the veterinary service of the country from which you are
exporting the animal to see what regulations apply – these
regulations vary between countries.
A ‘pet passport’ showing
vaccination history will be the minimal requirement, plus in some
cases blood tests from a European- recognised laboratory. There
may be a requirement that these tests are three months old
(depending on disease incubation periods).
This is not a rabies area, but in common with all European countries
there are certain regulations which apply.
All dogs purchased in France and born after January 2000 need to
be vaccinated (including anti-rabies vaccination) and tattooed. The
vet will supply each dog with a livret de santé internationale which
records the vaccinations and tattoos.
Both dogs and cats need this passport for:
- travel in Europe – primarily back to the UK
- to go into catteries or kennels.
Immediately prior (48 hrs) to exporting an animal to France you
will need a certificate from a ministry approved Vet that the animal
has no parasites – please check with your veterinary practice.
Veterinary Practices
The Service Veterinaire Departmentale for the area can be
contacted on : 05 49 44 81 41 39, rue de Beaulieu 86034 Poitiers.
There are several good veterinary practices in the region.

Pests
You may come across bees (abeilles), wasps (guêpes), bats (chauvessouris), rats (rats) and snakes (serpents).
There are several varieties of bees and wasps. The Charente is a
great region for honey production.
The large black, almost blue
bee is local to the region and is fond of cheese, but is not aggressive.
Bees and wasps are controlled much as in the UK. Your neighbours
or mairie will know the local beekeepers and there is a national
apiary society- see ‘apiculture’ in the yellow pages. It will be
3

necessary to contact a bee keeper if you have a problem with a
swarm.
The frelon or hornet is something else, an inch long and noisy, its
stings are dangerous, sometimes deadly, particularly for small
children. The pompiers will rid you of frelons but for ordinary
wasps you will need to contact a specialist company.
Bats are a protected species.
There are grass snakes and adders- the local veterinary surgeon will
tell you if there are adders in your area – and the best way to avoid
them is to keep the grass short.
Postal Services
I do not understand how the Postman (the facteur) finds
newcomers to a village or hamlet, but he seems to have no
problems!
You will need to install a post box if there is not one at your gate or
thereabouts. These are sold at most bricolage (D.I.Y.) stores. The
location and height of the post box should be such that the facteur
need not leave his vehicle to deposit your mail into it. If he is an
agreeable sort, he will take outgoing mail for you and he also sells
stamps. (See Christmas boxes advice)

Training sessions for potential helpers are ongoing. Those who wish

ask for a form to become a FRIEND of Open Door.
2. Cancer Support in the Poitou-Charentes, by English speakers for
English speakers. Web Site: www.cancersupportfrance.info.
Main Contacts: Linda and Andy Shepherd. Tel.05 45 29 08 93. or
Shorney Edwards 05 45 31 06 00.
Many of the volunteers have received training from Cancerlink in
the UK, however are not Medically trained. Some of the volunteers
have experienced cancer themselves and so understand first hand
the emotional effects of the disease and treatment. Several of the
volunteers have had experience of nursing or supported those
affected by cancer. Some have other therapeutic skills to offer.
Within the team there are people who speak French, and who may
be able to help you communicate more effectively with your
doctors.

Useful Vocabulary
FRENCH TO ENGLISH
Nb: French nouns are either male or female – if male use un (a) or le (the)
before, if female use une (a) or la (the). However, if the word starts with
a vowel, use l’ instead of le or la. If you are using the plural, for male and
female, use des (some) or les (the). If a word ends in E it is usually female.
Words more often used are in red.

Local government in France is based on a
3-tier system, with 22 régions, comprising
in all 96 départements, which between

The départments are (mostly) numbered
alphabetically.
The région of PoitouCharente comprises the
