Une nouvelle histoire à écrire
Après une carrière bien fournie et longue de maintenant quinze ans, quatre
albums de Creed et trois avec Alter Bridge, Mark Tremonti et son jeu de
guitare ne sont plus vraiment à présenter. Après avoir arraché nombre de
récompenses dont notamment quelques Grammy Awards pour son talent
de composition, le guitar hero a décidé, pour la plus grande joie de ses
fans, de composer un premier album solo qu'on aura attendu un moment,
qui voit enfin le jour en cette fin d'été 2012. Alors qu'All I Was, c'est le nom
qu'il porte désormais, faisait languir les aficionados du musicien américain
qui attendaient probablement un album de guitare très technique, presque
instrumental, Mark Tremonti nous surprend en fait avec un disque
complètement orienté “mélodie”, même si la plus part des riffs qui le
composent son influencé par le speed/power metal qu'il écoute depuis sa
plus tendre enfance. Notre gratteux a accepté de répondre à nos questions
par téléphone, en direct d'Alaska où il présentait cette première plaque solo
pour une des premières fois en live.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Tout d'abord, comment te sens-tu Marl ? As-tu déjà eu des retours
à propos de ce premier album solo ?
Mark: Oui, en fait ça se passe vraiment très bien ! Pour l'instant, tout le monde m'a
récomforté dans l'idée que cet album est réussi. Nous sommes de bonne humeur pour
démarrer les tournées avec ce disque.
S: Pourquoi avoir décidé de composer un album solo ? Combien de temps cela t'a-t-il
pris, et as-tu rencontré des problèmes pendant le processus d'écriture ?
Mark: Je voulais le faire simplement parce que j'avais encore des tonnes idées stockées
quelque part dans mes têtes, sur des bandes, sur mon ordinateur ou mon téléphone, et je
ne voulais pas que ces idées ne voient jamais le jour. J'ai donc décidé de les réunir pour
en faire un album où je chanterais moi-même, et j'ai vraiment pris beaucoup de plaisir à
faire cela ! Il m'a fallu environ un mois pour organiser ces idées et structurer les quatorze
titres que nous avons enregistrés, et ensuite trois mois pour les répéter, les arranger, écrire
tous les solos, et tout enregistrer.
S: Peux-tu nous dire ce que représente ce titre All I Was pour toi ? Cet album est-il le
meilleur moyen de laisser tous les mauvais souvenirs derrière toi et d'avancer ?
Mark: Non, je pense plutôt qu'il représente vraiment d'où je viens, d'où viennent mes
racines musicales, tout ce qui me concerne en fait. Tu sais, j'adore la musique lourd mais
avec beaucoup de mélodie, c'est ce que j'aime le plus, mais en même temps j'ai grandi
en écoutant du pur metal aussi.
S: Quand j'ai entendu dire que tu travaillais sur un album solo, je pensais à quelque chose
de plus technique, mais finalement ce projet est vraiment basé sur les mélodies, un peu
comme ce que tu fais dans Alter Bridge ou Creed ! Peux-tu nous expliquer pourquoi cet
album est comme il est ?
Mark: Tu vois, quand j'ai eu l'opportunité de faire un album solo, j'ai vraiment voulu
montrer à tout le monde qui je suis vraiment, et depuis des années je travaillais sur des
mélodies chantées, donc quand j'ai eu la chance d'entrer en studio, j'ai décidé de mettre
toutes mes idées préférées sur cet album, c'était le bon moment pour moi.
S: Pour les fans qui soutiennent Alter Bridge, ça pourrait être un peu difficile d'apprécier
cet album solo à sa juste valeur, car il leur faudrait oublier la voix de Myles pour profiter
de la tienne ! Que crois-tu qu'ils penseront de ta voix et de ces nouvelles chansons ?
Mark: Quand je regarde les réactions des fans sur les réseaux sociaux, il semble que cela
soit vraiment très positif, ils sont très solidaires. Et puis, les fans d'Alter Bridge savent que le
groupe est toujours là, et que nous ferons un nouvel album l'année prochaine, donc ils
continuent à nous soutenir dans tout ce que nous faisons.

S: Quand tu composes des chansons, comment sais-tu que tel morceau deviendra une
chanson d'Alter Bridge, ou tel autre un de Creed, ou maintenant une chanson de pour ton
projet solo ? Est-ce toujours évident pour toi d'assigner ces chansons à tes différents
groupes ?
Mark: En fait, quand je compose, ce n'est jamais pour un projet spécifique, j'écris
simplement. Et après ça, j'essaye d'étiquetter mes idées, de les catégoriser. Pour moi, c'est
toujours facile de dire pour quel groupe telle chanson fonctionnera le mieux... et pour ce
nouveau projet solo, encore une fois, je voulais donner de mes racines les plus heavy,
avec des rythmes beaucoup plus speed metal, qui fonctionneraient parfaitement avec
mes nouveaux solos. Mais ça ne veut pas dire du tout... tu vois, je veux toujours incorporer
des trucs plus heavy dans le prochain album d'Alter Bridge, mon idée n'a pas changé
pour autant !
S: Comment as-tu abordé le fait de jouer de la guitare et chanter en même temps sur des
chansons complètes ? Est-ce facile pour toi de jouer et chanter un morceau comme « All I
Was », par exemple ?
Mark: Eh bien, en fait c'est un des morceaux les plus faciles à chanter pour moi ! Tu sais,
avant d'enregistrer cet album, je voulais être sûr que je pourrais chanter et jouer en même
temps sur chacune de mes idées, donc quand nous avons démotisé ces morceaux, nous
avons pris l'habitude de les jouer souvent ensemble, pour que je sois sûr de pouvoir les
chanter.
S: Peux-tu nous parler des autres gars que tu as engagés sur ce projet pour jouer la guitar
et la batterie à tes côtés ? Quel est leur parcours musical ?
Mark: J'ai rencontré Eric Friedman il y a environ quinze ans, dans une convention de
guitare en Californie, c'était un guitariste très talentueux, en fait il y avait beaucoup de
musicians doués là-bas. Ensuite, c'est lui qui a enregistré la batterie pour les démos du
première album d'Alter Bridge, et il est devenu un de mes très bons amis. Et pour Garret
Whitlock à la batterie, il jouait dans Submersed, le groupe d'Eric à l'époque, et j'avais coproduit leur premier album il y a quelques années, donc je connaissais très bien ces garslà et je savais qu'ils avaient les mêmes racines musicales que moi, et qu'ils seraient parfaits
pour jouer ces rôles dans mon projet solo.
S: Je pensais avoir vu Brian Marshall sur des photos promotionnelles de ce projet et qu'il
s'occupait de la basse, mais il ne se trouve pas dans le livret du CD. Que est-il
exactement ? Fait-il finalement partie de ce groupe ou pas ?
Mark: Brian n'est pas officiellement dans le groupe, c'est en fait notre bassiste de tournée.
C'est simplement contractuel, je ne peux pas engager un autre musicien d'Alter Bridge ou
Creed dans un autre de mes groupes, tout simplement.
S: Ce premier album solo a été publié par Fret12, qui ne semblait pourtant pas être une
maison de disque à proprement parler, qu'est-ce donc finalement ? Peux-tu nous dire ce
qu'est Fret12, et quel est son but premier ?
Mark: Fret12 a vu le jour quand mon frère et moi avons décidé de créer un DVD éducatif
de guitare, où des guitaristes apprendraient aux gens à jour. Nous avons débord sorti mon
propre DVD il y a quelques années, nous avons ensuite signé Leslie West et Troy Stetina qui
ont sorti les leurs. Mais maintenant, c'est vraiment devenu un site de guitare, puisque des

centaines de guitaristes nous y ont rejoint. Puis quand nous avons décidé de faire cet
album solo, nous avons choisi de transformer également Fret12 en maison de disque, nous
avons trouvé un accord de distribution international, et mon frère Dan s'occupe du côté
marketing, car c'était déjà son job avant de travailler avec moi, donc c'était parfait !
S: Prévois-tu de venir en tournée en Europe pour la promotion de All I Was ? Et plus
important encore : viendras-tu en Belgique ?!
Mark: Oui, nous venons en Europe en octobre, en commençant par la Grande Bretagne,
puis je pense que nous avons un concert en Allemagne, un en Italie, puis à Amsterdam.
C'est une petite tournée de huit ou neuf dates, je pense, mais nous reviendrons ensuite en
février et nous essayerons de jouer dans le plus de villes possible, et j'espère bien sûr en
Belgique, car ça a toujours été un pays très important pour nous.

S: Quel est le prochain projet sur lequel tu travailleras ? Est-ce que ce sera le nouvel
album d'Alter Bridge, ou le nouveau Creed ? Ou peut-être as-tu déjà en tête un second
album solo ? Ou encore un autre projet totalement différent ?
Mark: En fait, nous avons déjà commencé à travailler sur un nouveau Creed, et nous
entretons bientôt en studio. Ensuite, nous travaillerons sur le projet disque d'Alter Bridge, en
décembre ou janvier, mais après ça je partirai sur la route en Europe pendant que Myles
sera en tournée en Inde avec Slash, donc je composerai sur la route pour le studio.
S: Eh bien merci beaucoup pour cette nouvelle interview, Mark ! As-tu un dernier mot pour
tes fans et nos lecteurs ici en Belgique et partout ailleurs ?
Mark: J'adore vraiment la Belgique, nous nous y sentons comme à la maison à chaque
fois que nous y allons, et c'est un des plus beaux pays que j'ai eu l'occasion de visiter.
J'espère que tout le monde achètera ce nouveau album pour me donner l'opportunité
d'y aller et de le visiter plus souvent !

A new tale to write
After a well stocked and fifteen years long career, with four Creed records
and three with Alter Bridge, Mark Tremonti and its guitar playing doesn't
need to be introduced anymore. After winning lots of awards as some
Grammy for his talented writing, the guitar hero decided, for the greatest joy
of his fans, to compose a first solo record that we've waited for a long time,
and that's finally coming out in this ending 2012 summer. As All I Was, that's
the name it's wearing now, was keeping waitinge every aficionado of the
American guitarist who were probably expecting a very technical, almost
instrumental, guitar record, Mark Tremonti surprises us with a completed
melody-driven album, even if the most part of the riffs contained on it are
influence by speed/power metal he's listening to since he was a child. The
guitar player accepted to answer to our questions by phone, live from
Alaska where he was introducing this first solo opus for one of the first times
live.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First of all, how are you doing Mark? Did you already get some
feedbacks about your new first solo record?
Mark: Yeah it's been actually amazing! Everybody's been very comforting with us for the
moment. We're in a good mood to start with this first solo record.
S: Why did you decide to write a solo record? How much time did it take to you, did you
meet some issues during the writing process?
Mark: I wanted to do it just because I had a lot of ideas just kinda stocked somewhere in
my head, or on tapes, on my computer or my phone, and I didn't want them not to see
the light of day. So I decided to put together an album doing vocals myself, and I had a
lot of fun time doing it! It took about a month to organize ideas to make the fourteen
songs we've recorded, then three months to rehearse these songs, tracking them and
writting all the solo parts.
S: Can you us what does this title All I Was represents to you? Is this album a way to let all
the bad things behind you to move forward?
Mark: No I think it more represents where I come from, where my roots have always lied,
just what I'm all about. You know, I like heavier music with melodies, that what I love the
most, and at the same time I grew up listening to pure metal.
S: When I heard that you were working an a solo record, I was thinking about something
more technical, but finally this project is really melody-driven, like what you do for Alter
Bridge or even Creed! Can you explain to us why this music turned out like it did?
Mark: You know, as I had an opportunity to make a solo record, I really wanted to show
what I'm all about, and for all these years I've worked on vocal melodies, and I loved it, so
when I had the opportunity to go to the studio and to put out my favorite ideas with this
record, that was the good time for me.
S: For the fans who support Alter Bridge, it could be a little bit difficult to appreciate this
solo record true worth, 'cause they will have to forget Myles voice to really appreciate
yours! What will they think about your voice and these new songs, according to you?
Mark: As I watched the fans reactions on the social media that's been over the top
positive, they've been very supportive, and the Alter Bridge fans know that Alter Bridge is
right there right on the corner and that we'll be making a new album next year, so they're
very supportive for everything that we do next to that.

S: When you write songs, how do you know that this song will be an Alter Bridge song, and
this one will be for your solo record, or this other one for Creed? Is it always obvious for you
to assign songs to your different projects?
Mark: Well when I write, I don't write for any specific project, I just write and then after
thath, I go through and label my ideas, categorize my ideas. For me it's pretty easy to tell
which song will be a Creed song, or which song will be an Alter Bridge song... and with this

new solo project, once again, I wanted to get out all of my heavier roots with the more
speed metal kinda driven rythms that would fit perfectly with my new solos. But that
doesn't mean at all that... you know, I still want to put a lot of heavy stuffs into the next
Alter Bridge record!
S: How did you approach the fact of playing and singing at the same time on entire
songs? Is it easy for you to sing and play a song like « All I Was » for example?
Mark: Well, that's actually one of the easiest song to sing for me! You know, before we
record this album, I wanted to be sure that I could sing and play at the same time for all
my ideas, so when we did the demos of these songs, we used to play them live a bunch of
times to make sure that I can sing and play these tracks.
S: Can you talk to us about the other guys you chose to play the guitar and drums on this
new project? Where do they come from musically?
Mark: I met Eric Friedman about fifteen years ago, at a guitar convention in California, he
was just a very talented guitar player, there were just talented musicians all around, in
fact. Then you know, he actually played the drums for the demos of the very first Alter
Bridge record, he became a very good friend of mine. And for Garrett Whitlock on the
drums, he actually played in Eric's band called Submersed, I co-produced their first record
some years ago, so I knew these guys very well and I knew that they had the same kind of
roots as mine, and that they would be perfect for this new solo project.
S: I thought I've seen that Brian Marshall was on promotional pictures of this project and
playing the bass, but he's not in the CD booklet. So what about that? Is he finally part of
this band or not?
Mark: Brian is not officially in the band, he actually our touring bass player. That's just
contractual things, you know, I can't have somebody else in Alter Bridge or Creed in
another one of my bands, it's just like that.
S: This first solo album has been released on Fret12, which doesn't seem to be a real bands
label, so what is it exactly? Can you explain us what is Fret12, and what is its main
purpose?
Mark: Well Fret12 started out as my brother and I decided to create a guitar instructional
DBD company, with guitarists teaching how to play. We first released my personal DVD
some years ago, then we signed Leslie West and Troy Stetina and they made their own
DVD's. But now it became kind of a guitar site, as hundreds of guitarists joined us. Now
when we decided to make this solo record, we chose to turn Fret12 in a record label for
this, then we found an international distribution deal, and my brother Dan is dealing with
all the marketing things, that's what he did for living, so it's perfect.
S: Do you plan to come and tour in Europe for the promotion of All I Was? And more
important to us: will you come to Belgium?!
Mark: Yeah we're coming over the Europe in October, starting in the UK, then I think one
show in Germany, maybe a show in Italy, then Amsterdam. That's a short tour, I think for
eight or nine shows, and then we're gonna come back in February and we'll try to play in
many cities as we can, and hopefully in Belgium, 'cause it's always been an important
country for us.

S: What will be the next project you will work on? Will it be the next Alter Bridge record, or
the next Creed one? Or maybe already a second solo record? Or do you have other
projects in mind?
Mark: Well we've already started to write Creed material, and we'll soon gonna be in the
studio. Then we'll be working on the next Alter Bridge record, starting in December or
January, but after that I'll be on tour in Europe and Myles will be on tour with Slash in India,
so I will be on the road writing parts for the studio.
S: Well thanks a lot for this interview, Mark! Do you have a last word for your fans and our
readers here in Belgium and everywhere else?
Mark: I absolutely love Belgium, we feel like home everytime we go there, it's one of the
most beautiful country I've been to, and I hope everybody will get this record to give me
the opportunity to come and visit more often!
