It is my pleasure to present the annual report of the
Board Chair to the Members of Canada’s National Ballet
School for the year 2011/2012. I wish to extend my
sincere thanks and appreciation to our Co-CEOs, Artistic
Director Mavis Staines and Executive Director Grant Troop
for their visionary leadership and the infectious passion
for the arts they bring to their work each day. It has been
my distinct pleasure to work closely with both of these
excellent leaders over the course of the past year.
In January of this year, we welcomed our new Executive
Director, Grant Troop, to the NBS family after 19 years of
service at the Ontario Science Centre. Grant brings proven
executive leadership, senior management expertise and a
broad knowledge of culture, museum and arts sectors in
the GTA, Ontario and beyond to his new role.
Fundraising events are critical to NBS, as seven out of
every ten students attending NBS require financial
assistance. NBS is the only ballet school in North America
that provides professional dance training, academic
instruction and residential care on the same campus.
With an international reputation for excellence, the School
focuses first and foremost on the students’ talent and not
their ability to finance their education, as talent is the sole
criterion for acceptance into the School’s Professional
Ballet Program. In February, NBS held its annual gala,
For the Love of Ballet at the Ritz-Carleton. The theme of
For the Love of Ballet marked NBS’ fifty three years of
passionate and enduring dedication to the advancement
of ballet in Canada and around the world. Over 400
people were in attendance and we exceeded our
fundraising goal in raising $800,000. In June, our annual
Golf Classic, held at the beautiful Coppinwood Golf Club
was also a tremendous success, raising over $300,000.
I am very pleased we are presenting to the membership a
strong year-end financial report with an Operating Fund
surplus of $310,000, marking a fifth consecutive year of
operating surpluses. This Operating Surplus was achieved
despite the early cancellation of a ten year funding agreement with the Province of Ontario in the spring of this
year, leaving NBS with a $500,000 revenue funding gap to
address. This year, the School received an increase in the
annual contribution from the NBS Foundation, which had
assets of over $40 million as of August 31, 2012.
NBS is fortunate to have a committed and knowledgeable
Board of Directors bringing a high level of enthusiasm and
ensuring good governance throughout the year. My
thanks to all Board members, and in particular Vice
Chairs Brenda Eprile and Bruce Walter, Secretary Simon
Foster and Committee chairs Lili de Grandpré, Michèle
McCarthy, Craig Pho and Cynthia Caron Thorburn.
My second year as NBS Board Chair has been both very
eventful and fulfilling. I am honoured to have served as
your Board Chair and to have your trust and confidence.
I am confident that NBS will continue to be a leader in the
Canadian arts community and among the best in the
world in professional ballet training. I know NBS will
continue to succeed on its current course and that new
heights of excellence will be achieved in the future.

C’est avec plaisir que je présente le rapport annuel du
président du conseil aux membres de l’École nationale
de ballet du Canada pour l’année 2011-2012; une autre
année qui aura été marquée par des réalisations extraordinaires sur les plans artistique et scolaire. Je remercie
de tout cœur nos codirecteurs généraux, Mavis Staines,
directrice artistique, et Grant Troop, directeur exécutif,
pour leur leadership visionnaire et la passion contagieuse
avec laquelle ils abordent leur travail tous les jours. C’est
avec le plus grand bonheur que j’ai travaillé en étroite
collaboration avec ces excellents leaders au cours de
l’année dernière.
Je suis très heureux que nous présentions aux membres
un solide rapport de gestion financière de fin d’exercice,
comprenant notamment un surplus du Fonds de
fonctionnement s’élevant à 310 000 $, ce qui marque la
cinquième année consécutive d’excédents d’exploitation.
Ce surplus de fonctionnement a été réalisé malgré
l’annulation précoce d’une entente de financement de dix
ans avec l’Ontario ce printemps, laquelle a obligé l’École
à combler un écart de financement de 500 000 $. Cette
année, l’École a reçu une augmentation de la contribution
annuelle de la Fondation de l’ÉNB, dont les actifs
s’élevaient à plus de 40 millions de dollars au 31 août 2012.
En janvier, la famille de l’ÉNB a accueilli son nouveau
directeur exécutif, Grant Troop, après 19 années de
service au Centre des sciences de l’Ontario. Grant fera
profiter l’École de son sens du leadership, de son
expertise en gestion et de ses vastes connaissances dans
les domaines de la culture, des musées et des arts à
Toronto, en Ontario et au-delà des frontières.
L’ÉNB a la chance de pouvoir compter sur un conseil
d’administration dévoué et compétent qui est toujours
très enthousiaste et assure une bonne gouvernance tout
au long de l’année. J’en remercie tous les membres, en
particulier les vice-présidents Brenda Eprile et Bruce
Walter, le secrétaire Simon Foster et les présidents des
comités Lili de Grandpré, Michèle McCarthy, Craig Pho
et Cynthia Caron Thorburn.
Les activités de souscription sont essentielles à l’ÉNB
puisque sept élèves sur dix reçoivent une aide financière.
L’ÉNB est la seule école de ballet en Amérique du Nord à
offrir sous un même toit une formation professionnelle en
danse, l’enseignement scolaire et l’hébergement en
résidence. Avec sa réputation internationale en matière
d’excellence, l’École se concentre avant tout sur le talent
des jeunes plutôt que sur leur capacité à payer pour leurs
études, le talent étant le seul critère d’admission à son
Programme de ballet professionnel. En février, l’ÉNB a
tenu son gala annuel à l’hôtel Ritz-Carleton. Le thème For
the Love of Ballet reflétait le dévouement passionné de
l’établissement à faire progresser la cause du ballet au
Canada et partout au monde et ce, depuis 53 ans. Plus
de 400 personnes ont assisté à l’événement et nous avons
dépassé notre objectif en récoltant 800 000 $. En juin,
notre tournoi de golf annuel qui a eu lieu au magnifique
club Coppinwood a également connu un grand succès et
a permis d’amasser plus de 300 000 $.
L’année qui vient de passer a été très satisfaisante pour
moi à titre de président du conseil d’administration de
l’ÉNB. Je suis honoré d’avoir joué le rôle de président du
conseil et de sentir la confiance que vous m’accordez. Je
suis convaincu que l’ÉNB continuera d’être un leader
dans la communauté artistique canadienne et demeurera
l’une des meilleures écoles de ballet au monde. Je sais
que l’ÉNB continuera de réussir et atteindra de nouveaux
sommets d’excellence dans l’avenir.
