artists’ background
Edward Aleman and Wilmer Marquez perform as a duo of acrobatic hand to hand. This creative duo started to perform in Colombia 12 years
ago. There, the acro-duo created small performances before joining the Colombian circus company: La Gata Cirko.
As members of the La Gata Circus, they took part in the first Colombian contemporary circus show directed by Felipe Ortiz who is director
and stage manager of La Gata Cirko.
After this enriching experience, Aleman and Marquez duo felt the need to widen their training and experience. In 2008, they joined the 22nd
class group in Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC) at Châlons en Champagne (France).
In the second year of their course, Wlmer Marquez sustained injury. The duo faced this unexpected constraint by developing new acrobatic
acts , hence evolving further into their own new style. This experience has confirmed their strong belief gradually set out since they met:
an artist should find his/her freedom in constraint and make it a stepping stone to artistic creation.
During the tour of their end-of-year circus show, “Am”, directed by artist Stephane Ricordel (founder of Arts Sauts) , they started their own
circus act project “Quien Soy?” and set up EL NUCLEO Circus Company.

Artistic collaborators
Felipe ORTIZ / LA GATA CIRKO (Colombia)
Felipe Ortiz has experienced a long career as an actor, author and stage manager in the field of new circus and improvisation theatre. He was co-manager of the
shows Déjà vu (2005) and Zoom (2010) and staged La Cita in 2009.
All along his career, he has developed his research on techniques using movement, acrobacy, and stage improvisation that he studied with major masters. With the
project Gata Impro, he took part in many improvisation festivals in Europe and America, presenting various shows and running workshops (movement, impro and
clown acts). He has also co-staged the 2011 closing show FIFA World Sub-20 produced by the Festival of Iboamericano Theatre in Bogota.
At the same time, he works as a circus and stage improvisation lead trainer in Javeriana University and regularly runs various workshops in the Gata Cirko training
programme.
Felipe Ortiz stepped in for a month during the first working phase implying researches and script writing.
Raphaël NAVARRO / Cie 14 : 20
Raphaël Navarro set up Compagnie 14:20 together with Clément Debailleul in 2000. Winners at Circa in 1997 with their solo acts, they staged Aurore and Le Vent
Souffle (1997), Poème Magique (2001) , Visions fugitives (video art) (2001) , Etoiles (2002), Solo S (2004).
Raphaël Navarro has worked with many different artists: saxophonist and composer Laurent Dehors, choreographer Philippe Decouflé and Gisèle Gréau, poet Michel butor, magician Guilhem Julia or fashion designer Jean-Paul Gautier.
At the same time, he managed a creative process called Hors Scènes to display magical art in cultural heritage places such as Maison Corneille in 2006.
Since 2005, Raphaël Navarro has also been associated with CNAC in development and research of Compagnie 14:20 on new magic and with Cirque-Theatre d’ Elbeuf
(circus sector) until 2006.
Raphaël is part of the project since the first residency in Colombia, He advises
us on the magic effects and the technical requierements. He will be back on the
work process at the end for the last changes.
Stéphane RICORDEL / Circus Artist, manager of Theâtre Sylvia Montfort
Stéphane Ricordel trained as a trapeze artist and entered the circus world in the international festival Cirque de Demain and then in Cirque du Soleil.
He founded Les Arts Sauts in 1993 with Germain Guillemot, Fabrice Campion, Côme Doerflinger (3 CNAC former students) , Frank Michel and Laurence de Magalhaes. For the following 15 years, they travelled across France and the whole world with circus shows in which they combined the art of trapeze with poetic
fantasy. Their number expressed their everlasting research around space and vertigo.
After 14 years as an acrobat within the group, Stéphane Ricordel opened his own theatre to artists and companies from the whole world. He became manager of
Theatre Sylvia Montfort jointly with Laurence de Magalhaes.Together, they have envisioned a theatre opened towards the world, a space of freedom that promotes and encourages exchanges and connections .
Stéphane Ricordel will be involved in the last working phase of the project, in
order to refine and leak out technical issues, during the residency at the Theater
Sylvia Montfort.

La Cascade, national centre for circus act
La Grange Dîmière- Théâtre de Fresnes
La Cascade, National Centre for Circus Acts is a place of circus arts development located in Bourg Saint Andéol in Ardèche, France.
La Cascade is associated with two world famous circus companies Les
Nouveaux Nez and Les Colporteurs. They work together as a research
laboratory, a place to support and accompany circus arts development.
In order to reach their aim, La Cascade has set up various operations to
help and support young companies.
One of these operations is the status of co-resident which was set in
2011.
Ces regards extérieurs me
semblent garantir la qualité du projet.
Edward Aleman et Wilmer Marquez me semblent avoir la force de
leur imaginaire, voilà tout.
This particular status enables a young company to enjoy a place to train
regularly, offices and equipment as well as the availibilty of La Cascade
Team circus skills, for a long period of time (from one month to one year
depending of their needs) .
La Cascade and El Nucleo met in 2011 during the Nouveau Festival d’Alba
where the show of the 22nd CNAC class group, “Am”, was staged.
La Cascade offered El Nucleo Company this specific co-resident status
for the year 2012 therefore giving them help and support in all sorts of
operations such as looking for co-productions, project and company organisation... They also took them as partners in various projects : Cirque en
cascade and the preliminaries of the Festival d’Alba.
This choice has been triggered by the obvious human and artistic qualities
La Cascade saw in El Nucleo artists and by the promising originality of
their circus act project.

Text in
«Quien soy?» the bases of the searching
work process
Our researches are motivated by our will to speak about meeting one
another; our work starts by the observation of the lonely human being
and its communication attempts, this is what stimulate the bases of our
working process.
This show is not autobiographical, but it starts with us, from our thoughts,
our point of view, which are filled with our Colombian identity.
As Colombians living in France, we have a specific look on our native culture
and on french culture also.
Our researches come from there, from this particularity that leads us to
universal.
During our first residency in Colombia (it was significative and really important for us to do so), we worked from a basic scenario which is transcribed
here, with the obvious limits that a research work transcription implies.
1. The audience is watching at two characters together on stage, and understand that they are neighbours.
They live in next door flats, but they don’t know each other.
Those characters are chatting on the internet, we understand they are actually talking together, while they don’t know each other in real life.
They are chatting together not knowing they are neighbours.
This path leads us to a work about loneliness, about the gap between virtual
communication and real communication. This first sequence is also a way for
us to explore themes like repetition and routine.
The video work and magic effects with the pepers’gost (hologram type) will
picture this repetitive kind of life.
What can happen to make those two characters meet each other ?
Which element will come to shake up their everyday life ?

2. Researches about judging one another, about voyeurism and tolerance.
-
Through particular aspects of a story, people can paradoxically learn
to know each other.
-
When you focus your attention on someone else’s detail : isn’t it because it brings you back to your own self ?
-
While you are looking at the other person, you are not watching yourself.
3. Metaphor of the personal madness
Each one of us has its own vision of reality, which is deformed by the prism of
our point of view. We all live on earth, but each individual apprehends reality
in his own way, we live together.
Hand to hand will picture the real connection, physical; it’s the form that put
together two persons. The “us” appears like a third identity.
The real connection is in the mixing.
Influence and artistic relationship :
Several artistic universes inspire us :
Pedro Almodovar by his description of madness as well as people and situation whims.
Emir Kusturica (particularly Arizona dream) for its offbeat side and dreamlike
universe.
Tim Burton also, and his way of dealing by the fantastic aestheticism, inner
worlds and fears.
The relationship in the music :
We have given the musical creation to a Colombian artist.
It was important to us to have this part of Colombian music as in our eyes, it
pictures the mixing and the meeting, between races, stories and territories.
In Colombia, dance and music are the main vectors of meetings and social
links.
Edward Aleman- flyer
Edward Aleman was born in 1985 in Colombia. Since he was
very young, he has always been strongly drawn to art and its
expressions – more particularly to stage art, dance and circus
performances.
Therefore, as early as the age of 12, he started practising circus arts, drama and dance. After graduating from high school,
he followed a course of sports teaching at university. He dedicated lots of his time to organisations involved in circus art
development with local populations (commited art) .
Edward Aleman was a member of the first contemporary circus
company as a performer. Together with Wilmer, they put up
their first show Déjà Vu , which experienced quite a success in
Colombia. Following this professional experience, Edward joined the CNAC (Centre National des Arts du Cirque) 22nd class
group in 2008 in Châlons en Champagne.
Wilmer Marquez- carrier
Wilmer Marquez grew up in Bogota. When he was 9, he
joined the School of Arts for children which was set up
with the help of Bogata Town Council. For 4 years,he
practised and developed his skills in their theatre group
“Fu”.
Then, from 1996 to 2000, he turned to more sporty courses such as capoeira, break dance, gymnastics and swimming. From 1998, he also joined a group of Colombian
folk dance and a group of modern dance “Trastaller” with
whom he carried out numerous drama, mime, dance and
costume design workshops completed by shows before
real audiences.
His first real professional experiences dated from 2002
when he started working for “Arte en Todas Partes” foundation, teaching juggling, acrobatics and hand to hand.
He took part in many social circus art projects as a trainer (teaching children and teenagers circus arts) run by
the foundation. He also became a member of the circus
company La Gata Cirko and, with them, took part in the
development of a new show: Déjà Vu, the first contemporary circus show in Colombia.
In 2003, he started a course to obtain a degree in Physical Education that ran until 2005.
Today, he takes part in many circus research worshops
within La gata Cirko as well as with other organisations.
