MATHIEU LEHANNEUR
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Mathieu Lehanneur graduated from ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris in 2001. His work explores possibilities
in nature and technology attempting to redefine our relationship with food, medicine, transport and other
crucial aspects of life that many young designers tend to shy away from. He frequently works alongside
scientists, trying to find out more about the human body and the real needs that we all have so that he
can create futuristic but functional solutions.
Lehanneur made his international début with a series entitled ‘Elements’ (VIA Carte blanche 2006) and
the ‘Bel Air’ filtering system for plants (2007), six objects that form a domestic ‘Health Angels’ kit for
balancing everyday physiological needs (such as lack of sunlight in winter) and countering aggression
factors in urban settings (noise & air pollution). He has since worked on a number of conceptual products
as well as interior and packaging design projects for the likes of Cartier and Paco Rabanne. In 2008 his
work featured in Design and the Elastic Mind, a major exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
He is continuing to work on projects that aim to improve our quality of life by combining science and
creative thinking including an interior for St Hillaire church in Melle and a workshop for teenagers at Centre
Pompidou in Paris.
The designer made his international début with the Elements series and the Bel Air filtering system for
plants: these are six objects that help balancing everyday physiological needs – such as lack of sunlight
– and countering aggression factors in urban settings – noise and air pollution. He has since worked on
a number of conceptual products such as Local River of 2008, a domestic ‘refrigerator-aquarium’ that
breeds freshwater fish for eating and grows vegetables at the same time. The project enables people
to grow their own food thus the growing vegetables in floating pots assures purification of water by
eliminating nitrates and other reserves. He has also worked on interior and packaging design projects for
the likes of Cartier and Paco Rabanne.
